Hieronimus (Marius Matthee) can help you. I have a small movie about that event. There you can see Jean Todt sitting in the same car as Depailler. Todt was the navigator, :rotfl: Patrick the driver. Later J-P Beltoise drove together with Todt.

Yes Stefan. Depailler must have run the first three days then replaced from Beltoise. On the twin machine Jabouille it has been replaced from Pescarolo. But I do not have other data.

Can someone enlighten me about Matra's use of three drivers in the 1970 Tour de France. Since the cars only had two seats, it would appear that different co-drivers were used on different days of the event. Did the regulations really allow this. No other cars that year show three drivers. I think, in earlier years, the co-driver had to run at least one of the speed events. Could the third driver have really been a rally navigator to make sure that the cars lost no points during the road sections. Then, at the required speed event, the second driver was put in. Just a theory.

Ok here the fact:

Jean Todt was alway "just" the navigator. First Patrick Depailler drove the Matra and later Jean-Pierre Beltoise took over. But Todt was always on board..

Is there please perhaps someone that can help me with a magazine race report of this race? Anything from SPORT AUTO, ECHAPPEMENT, AUTOSPORT, etc.

I also try to get hold of all the different "stage" results/classifications.

The French guys on Forum Auto would probably be best placed to help - there is a long thread on T de F Auto there.

Thanks guys.

Yes, the FORUM AUTO thread on the Automobile Tour de France is massive. Nice photos from several years, but not the 1970 race report I try to find.

Did AUTOSPORT ever report on these events? Being the quality magazine it is, I shall be quite suprised if they did not cover it.

Robert

Do you perhaps know someone who will have a copy of l'Automobile? I only need a copy of the 1970 TdeF report...not the whole magazine. Thanks.

Hubert, you're THE man! This is exactly what I was looking for. I'll be happy to return the favour.

It is most interesting to see how closely match the two Matras were on the circuit stages. Fractions of a second separating them, but then on the hillclimb stages, Beltoise clearly had the edge over Pescarolo.

You often search about something there is in front of your nose : behind Depailler adjusting his goggles with a funny prewar helmet ... the Ferrari 275 GTB is approching the starting line ! The charming lady at the starting flag needs help ...

Thank you very much, Hubert!

I am sure the "blonde" on the extreme left of the last photo is the wife of Patrick...Michele Depailler.

No she isn't, Michele Depailler (63) looks now, 38 years later much younger than the lady on the photo... and she is very, very small ;)
