I know this has been asked a 1000 times, but what the hell - this is me & I want some advice!

I know the MOMO is the best wheel without question. That is great, but I can't afford or justify that much money. Therefore, I'm looking at the following:

Non FF

Microsoft wheel
Thrustmaster 360 Modena

FF

Microsoft FF
Thrustmaster FF GT
Logitech FF GP

Your thoughts would be appreciated on the above & also as to whether I should bother with FF at all.

Thanks :)

If you are looking at a non-FF wheel, make sure you try out the Thrustmaster NASCAR 2 Pro Digital, it's quite a bit superior to the Modena in terms of accuracy and button mapping. When I say 'button mapping', it is physically impossible to program the shifter differently than what you have programmed the paddles, it's kind of aggravating but not to the point where the wheel is unusable.

Don't get me wrong, the Modena is a good wheel but the Pro Digital 2 is a lot better (I own both of them just so that you know). The PD2 is a rebranding of a what appears to be now discontinued Modena Pro wheel and yeah, it says NASCAR on it but that's what permanent markers are for! ;)

Thanks guys.

I was thinking of the Modena Pro as well - thanks for the info KinetiK. NASCAR branding instead of Ferrari? Where is the puke smilie?

Chrissy Boy - I don't think & could justify more than $300 NZ ($150 US).

I have a Logitech Formula Force GP wheel. It's great - does everything I want it to.

I might sell it if you're looking secondhand (I'm in Australia). Might be time for me to upgrade :) . Email me if you're keen.

That amount of money would at least get you a ms ff wheel...I don't know what others think of the sidewinder but I love mine and it's not even force feedback. (of course it's the only wheel I've ever had so I can't really compare it to other brands)

The Sidewinders here are $400 NZ.

I tried pricing the MOMO, but no one had heard of it

I think I am leaning towards non FF - unless anyone can convince me otherwise ;)

I had a go with the Thrustmaster FF GT in the shop on NFS Porsche challenge. Either it was broken or just plain sucked cause all it did was vibrate - no other effect at all!

Kiwi, beware of the Modena 360. I broke two of them in one year. It's a very nice wheel when it works, but it's just not well built.

And I have to mention, I broke my first Modena 360 as well, the paddles in behind are quite flimsy (esp the little metal flap that actuates the microswitch). Guillemot was quite handy with the warranty however, they even paid my shipping costs!

Well the sidewinder ff model is a pretty cheap model in the ff range so if you can't afford that you probably wont be able to get a quality ff wheel...unless you can find one second hand. As for non ff model the Ms wheel's a good wheel(well I love mine :) ), apparently it can last for 2 years + from what I've heard, also it's very easy to clip/unclip from your desk. Apart from the Sidewinder I'm not aware of any other quality non-ff wheels in your price range so goodluck. :)

I tried one in the shop the other day. The more I think about it, it must have been an overworked shop demo because it was awful. The only effect it had was to vibrate now & then!

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I think it has a lot to do with how a particular game implements ff eg some games give crap ff because it's not programmed properly so it's not always the fault of the wheel.

Good choice

I have a Logitech FF and a Modena Pro non-FF - I prefer my Modena.

Also, what's great about the Modena is that it has 4 paddles, 2 for shifting and then 2 for braking and accelerating, but what's great about the accel/braking ones is that they have touch sensitivity, so I now race without the pedals (faster acceleration / braking, and it is often ackward to use pedals).

The Modena Pro is a good wheel - the only problem I had with it was that the paddles are quite flimsy. I managed to break my 'upshift' paddle within three months. Admittedly I did 'hit' it quite aggresively but still.........

To the original poster

1) On the issue of force feedback, I have to say, I can't drive without it. The feeling of bumps etc. I can do without - but the resistance during cornering is necessary. With that you can tell when the vehicle is within the limits of traction and when it is about to 'let go'.

2)............ justify, smustify - sell the wife and kids and get the MOMO you won't regret it.

I used to have the Force RS, but it had a thing for breaking down. : I must admit though, the shifter and clutch add on sounded very cool. Do you have them?
