The Labatt brewing company - which was associated with the inaugural Canadian GP back in 1967 - is coming back as a sponsor to the Canadian GP as of 2003. Oddly enough, it was because of a war between Labatt and Molson that the 1987 F1 race was called off. Both canadian breweries were battling it out for the right to host the event. Labatt's last association with the GP goes back to 1986 - in a race that was won by Nigel Mansell driving the all-conquering Williams-Honda.

French article of story.

What's unclear to me is whether Labatt is the title sponsor or an associate sponsor. I thought Air Canada still had 2 years to go on their contract. Of course, A-C is losing bags of cash so perhaps their idea of re-branding the event as the "Zip Grand Prix du Canada" or even the "Tango GP" simply didn't fly with Normand Legault. So, can you clarify Labatt's role and esp if this means the Molson Dry girls will be replaced with the Labatt Blue Light Dancers? This is important stuff.;)

Berner,

Unfortunately, this does mean the end of "the Molson girls" at the Canadian GP
It hasn't been specified if they are replacing Air Canada as title sponsor.
All that was said that this was a 3 year deal to replace Molson.
My feeling is that they will be associate sponsor - like Molson was.

BTW - Molson will still be the sponsor of the CART MOLSON INDY in Montreal.

OT- Patrick Carpentier is set to sign a two year deal to stay in CART.

The first year of the contract is to be honored by Player's and the secong one by Gerald Forsythe himself ! GF is keen to keep Patrick in the CART series for the next few years. The deal is reported to be for $3.5 millions plus bonuses. The deal is to be announced by the end of the week !!

Finally got to my Globe and Mail: yes, Labatt is simply a beer supplier. And watch out for that apostrophe "S".... it's LABATT, not Labatt's in la Belle Province.... although with the Gazette going bilingual, not much is sacred anymore.

And way to go for the Tool Guy, Mr. Car-pont-tee-eh. GQ photo shoot paid off! Even my wife likes his lines, I mean apex.
