Hans - it is now my belief, based on a tiny news report in an early 1938 Automobil Revue, that the table you produced some ten years ago is correct in all but one aspect: the Pau race should be replaced with Tripoli. This of course produces the same points score for Lang under the minimum system, but alters the more minor placings - not that we know what they were, since the ONS didn't tell us. I have found some more press reports - in Germany, Italy and even in a Czech paper published in Prague - which quote him as champion, all apparently copied from the original VB report.
I've also discovered that there is actually a similar controversy regarding one of the FICM championships!
