First impressions of the Formula One 2002 (PS2)

I'm a casual F1 player and I'm more to arcade than simulation. My main use of F1 games is getting in the mood before each GP. So I left for others to decide if it's simulation mode is of any use or not and concentrate in arcade and quick game modes. I use pad, not wheel.

I like the looks of the game. Tracks are a lot more detailed than in the previous version.
Track map and directional arrows is available. Good graphics. When there's a lot of cars in the same picture the games slows down just slightly (not at all as much as in Pro/Toca Race Driver) .

Arcade was fun but quite easy. I'm no Räikkönen but when playing as Kimi I was able to win 11 races in arcade championship. I was able to clinch the title in Spa... It's notable that crashing an avful lot terminates the race. It is possible to spin if you take corners carelessly. Good driving feel for an arcade.

Quick game: better driving feel, actually quite good. You may pick your grid position. It's possible to adjust traction control and brake bias during the race. Harder opponents than in the arcade mode. Some of the tracks suck in the same way as the real ones: god, I hate some of the corners in Indianapolis and Malesia, not to mention Hungaroring. Monza seems very narrow. Weather seems to be random. Wet track is very slippery, so good physics in this sense.

I've started championship in simulation mode (semi-pro level). With no effort i was able to put myself third in qualification. In race I sucked big time, these bastards are driving quite fast... I have fooled around with the set ups but I'm yet to notice any meaningful difference. However, adding some wing seems to help keeping it on the right track. This seems challenging.

Pitting seems to be useless in shorter races and I'm too lazy to drive 54 laps in Melbourne park. Consider this as a problem... I haven't found anything considering race tactics.

There's AI cars in 2-player mode, which brings me joy...

Worth its price. Features Season 2001 Review DVD.

Is this designed in-house by Sony? ala Formula 1 2001

Anything is better than EA Sports F12002

May be so, I haven't tried EA's latest effort.

Yes, I do mean the ps2 version...and yes this is the follow-up to SCEA (Sony's) version from last year. Everything I've read about it thus far leads me to beleive it's a superior product to EA's 2002 effort.

TT6 - can you tell me a bit about the 'Hot Seat' mode?

I bought it yesterday after not having played it since the 2000 version.

Initial thoughts...

I generally like it and look forward to trying to master it.

Sound is sometimes lifelike and sometimes awful.

I went straight into Full - Hardest difficulty - Simulation mode to see whats in store for me for the next year and selected a Ferrari and spent most of the night at Spa. For some reason just as you drop down before you rise up "eau rouge" you lose about 30-40mph (160>120mph), I thought that I had some sort of brake assist swictched on but couldn't find anything. Anyone else got any ideas?

One small thing that really did bug me was the fact that your car hits the concrete curb at Spa when you exit the pits, you also hit the wall when you pull out of the garage at Monaco. I know this a small thing but annoys me as you have to be so careful when driving, yet the game desingers seem happy to smack it into the wall before you've even got hold of it.

One of the most imposed rules of the 2002 season was drivers going over the white line exiting the pits. I tried to break this rule at the Spanish GP and received no punishment. Would have been a worthwhile realistic addition I feel.

Other rules that don't seem to apply are... driving the wrong way down the track, hitting other drivers, cutting corners and others I've yet to discover.

Also during qualifying it allowed me to change from soft to hard tyres, although I didn't actually try and go out on them?

I know a lot of the above gripes are small but I was expecting a tough simulation. Sure have the lesser options but why not a true simulation. The car is pretty unforgiving so why not continue that with the gameplay. It doesn't seem to have moved on much since the 97 version I first played.

Hopefully someone will post and tell me that I didn't select the "real world" feature!

after playin it a bit more

(see my post http://www.atlasf1.c...54&pagenumber=2)

ive discovered another lil glitch :D this one will let u win any race!!!

in simulation, semi pro...after qualifying a brill 3rd at suzuka in a sauber (semi pro, pah, piece of piss) i crashed on the 1st corner....did i say piece of piss? well anyway...2 laps down i was toodling along when i felt like braking for no reason infront of villeneuve, as you do...he stopped like a gentleman racer (and or moron) ans parked his car....now for some reason the ai cars self destruct if parked, realistic reliability (erm, yeeeesss, i guess)....a yellow flag came out, and then his car vanished, my pit crew told me he was out too....now 21st out of 21....then, me being a devioush child i decided to park my car sideways on the exit of 130R (damage off btw :D ) and waited for the pack to pile into me...they did...caused a huge traffic jam...and i sat there like a lemon for 5mins while my pit crew kept telling me of cars goin out the race, cars vanishing...2 cars slipped by, but caught the melee proper next time round..."superb driving! ure goin up the field now"...."keep it up" etc.... in the end, i was the last man standing and i won....hoorah....how amusing? well it entertained me, especially with james allen tellin the world wat a gr8 race by heidfeld...

also in the "reward" section it has a safety car mode, looks promising! and in arcade murray walker commentates. In sim, james+martin do the intro

Pitting really is a problem. When I crash into somebody or something (yeah, in the first corner usually) I'll loose my front wing. Pit person calls me in and I pit. But these lazy bastards don't do a thing to give me a new wing . Autopilot just gets me cruising thru the pitlane.

Am I stupid and do something wrong or is there's something fundamentally wrong in this game?

even though he tells u to pit in, u still have to call the pit yourself (press select i think) then he authorises u.......

have u tried my trick? think 130R is the perfect corner to try it on :)

Well, I finally bought it on Saturday, as it seems there was not much info around the game around.

I agree with TT6 on many of his comments.

I was a big fan of the 2001 version though it took me a hell of a time to master the semi-pro level without ABS and Traction Control. As a matter of fact I never mastered enough and I was able to win the World Championship only after crashing on purpose against Michael Schumacher on Suzuka, as there was no way I could stay in front of him during the race. The pro version is just for people with too much time or who could actually race in a real F1 car.

What I liked more than anything is the look of it. Much clearer than the 2001, also the possibility of having a really cockpit view, without seeing the helmet of the driver, just as you would sit on the car.

A nice thing is also not being able to restart right away if you crash badly or you screw up one corner. The temptation back then, on the 2001, was so big to restart the race while now you have to get out of the mode and get in again so you loose like 3 minutes in all the process.

Nice thing is that you can save in the middle of the race so if you are doing really well on a race, better save just in case you screw up. I know, that is not like the real life, but I ain't getting Schumacher's pay so I can screw up once in a while, plus I bet Schumacher does not have his wife around while he is competing bothering about when you are going to stop with the PS2 and go out do some shopping with her. And I assure you a wife can be quite distracting while going at 200 MPH.

Also a nice thing is that now you can advance time easily on qualifying, 15 minutes by pressing a single button, what gives you a perfect opportunity to see the times, the sectors, and who is on pole at that moment.

Finally the thing I like more is that now actually it gives you the sector time while you are racing and that is quite nice if you are a time-nut like I am. When I improve a sector time and they tell me through pits communication you get the kind of nervousness to try not to miss a corner and beat your best time.

Simulation mode semi-pro is quite challenging. I have to get used to the feeling and do more miles but I was able to get P7 with Pedro's Jaguar in Australia and finished the race on 4th after 6 cars had had engine and gearbox problems on 18 laps. You know the 1st race of the season always has DNFs....

May I use this post to start posting some times?

Melbourne 1.25.875 with Ruben's Ferrari, 1.29.8 with PDLR Jaguar

I know, I know, I could do better. I just have to get used to the game and learn some tericks setting the car up.

that was funny.
now for them to release the game here in the states with the free disk intact. The first version didn't come with it. Might have to get my ps2 chipped anyway. then I'll not worry about it.

Is the 2001 DVD review any good? The 2000 one was pretty poor - with awful commentary. Is it more of the same this time around? I would buy the game just for the DVD if it is any good...

Also, when i drove as Webber, there was no engine sound. Does anyone else have this problem??? should i swap my disc at the store for another copy???

1.23.545 with Rubens' Ferrari at Melbourne on lap 54/58 without ABS (on expert mode), hard tires and low fuel load. (I won the race with 3.5 secs in front ot MS)

I've had some time this Christmas to play and it's showing on the times.

I picked up the game cheap in the sales - I wasn't expecting much from the game, I only wanted it for the DVD review, which is pretty good (Thankfully Ben Edwards does the commentary rather than the guy who did the 2000 review). The game is awful! Sorry, but I have grown up on Geoff Crammond's GP series, and F1 2002 just doesn't get anywhere near it. My initial impressions were "no!!!". I gave it a second chance and my opinion improved slightly, but not much.

reminds me to ask a question..... was that a crap lap in the jag or is there actually a REAL speed difference between a ferrari and a minardi.....

i cant remember a f1 game on PS/PS2 where i couldnt stick it on pole as mazzacane or verstappen or something.

id like one of these games, where having driven basically the same lap in a ferrari and a minardi, where the only difference was the car and not you, to actually have a few sec difference between the two laps

In the EA sports F1 2002. There is a real speed difference of about 30+ bhp when you play in hard(expert) mode. That was an issue for me as well, not being just as fast in the Minardi as Ferrari. But you can still make things happen. I've noticed how being in a much slower car really improves your driving skill.

Actually it was a crap lap in both. I've been able to go down to 1.23.5 with Ferrari and 1.25.8 with Jaguar both without ABS on expert mode. I do not think I can reach the 1.23 with the Jaguar unless I very much improve on my driving skills.
I think the most challenging part of the game is that M Shumacher has so much constant good laps that to win a race you can not make a mistake on any of the laps. I am trying to win Brazil now and even if I post the fastest lap there with a 1.07.2 with RB, MS keeps doing 1.07.8 and 1.08.2 all the time. The smaller mistake and you kiss that win good bye. Two mistakes and say goodbye to the podium to an annoying Montoya that is all the time behind your back. Choose the wrong strategy and you will feel the tires given you away on lap 30/71 and your times dropping back to 1.10 secs as you fight to keep the car on track.
Thank God you can save on the middle of the race.

I think there are clear differences between cars, there were even on last years version. I tried the Renault of Trulli to give it a go and it only had up to gear 6 instead of the 7 you get with other cars.

I brought down the thickness of the brakes, brought down front and back flap, turned on the antiroll and the camber. The car was sliding like it was on ice but it was good enough to get me to P4 on qual. I could reach 325 km/h at the end of the long staright before the last turn.
On race I went back to a drivable set-up and tryed a one stop strategy. The tyres died 10 laps from my scheduled stop while I was running 5th. I started to loose time and crashed while runing 7th so I gave up on Malaysia and moved on to Interlagos where I am having my hands full at the present time to finish at least 2nd on the race after finishing 1st on qual.

Well, it's great, specially to do the complete races. You can save at any time, except during a pit stop I think, and then retake it just in the same spot you left it.

I bought this game about 6mnths ago cheap in a sale, played it a bit,but ended up leaving it to the side whilst i played Vice City non stop :) .now that 100% is in the bag 2wice in that,im giving Formula one 2002 another shot.

Im using the standard Controller since i have no wheel.Going straight in at Pro level since none of the driver aids are really essential.Playing as Montoya in the williams i find Albert PArk reasonably easy to set the car up for(add more front wing, stiffen the front anti roll bar) can qualify in the top 5 with reasonable ease in the dry, racing wise i still screw up a lot and make mistakes but il learn :D

At Malaysia i have a problem tho,i can set good times in the first two sectors, but in the final sector ever single lap i lose 2-3secs in one corner, the 2nd from last corner,a right hander leading onto the long straight.I just cant figure it out!

Also i do tend to find that changing the set up doesnt have that great an effect on the car,is it just me?

Seems a fun enough game anyhow,if i can just stop crashing! :
