Hello Ladies and Gentleman,

I was wondering if I could ask a really big favour. I'm looking for a particular Jim Clark photo to brighten up my desktop. It's a photo of Clark in (I think) the Lotus 25 sticking up his middle finger to the cameraman. I believe the photo was taken from a bridge looking down into Clark's cockpit.

Any help on where to find it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ian.

It is in Eric Dymock's book on Jim Clark.

hope you find it ianm.

Can we extend this thread to include our favourite Jimmy Clark photos. I would have to include any which depict him in a Lotus Cortina on 3/2/1 wheels. Others would include the Spa photo when he sits astride the (presumably cooling) exhausts of his Lotus chatting to Dan Gurney. Slightly more obscure is Geoff Goddard's photo of him with an impossibly large lead at the beginning of Le Mans 1960 (?1961). The Border Reivers DBR1 would soon lose this lead but this shot typifies Jimmy's racing spirit in my mind. I'll try and scan it your way.

The finger?

Why?

Whoops! I stand corrected. After checking, this is not the photo you are looking for. The one I was thinking of on page 164 of the Dymock book is just a hand drawn caption: _ _ _ _ Off!

Sure there must be more pics of Clark with a Cortina on three wheels than on four...
The one I have to hand is in ''Jim Clark -portrait of a great driver'' by Gauld and others.

Have scanner but currently no means to post pictures.
(What's the legal position on posting other peoples images from books? It can't be strictly legal to scan them in the first place, can it?)

ian..middle finger....are you sure?? Have seen several photos of drivers displaying 2 fingers at the camera / one another (Innes Ireland springs to mind) but can't imagine that Jimmy would have been so ungentlemanly !

I remember a picture of Jimmy pulling a very unhappy face at the cameraman (Geoff Goddard ?)....this was from a Lotus 25 but a front/side elevation with no digits involved. I'll look it up when I get home this evening.

Also recall a photo of Jackie Stewart two-finger saluting fron his March 701. I suspect this was more a reflection of his views on the car's handling than anything.....should we open up a new thread dealing with driver's gestures ?.

I've always liked this shot of Damon Hill gesturing at Michael Schumacher.

My favorite Clark picture -- and one that pretty much defines his legend -- is from just after the end of the first lap at Clermont-Ferrand in the 1965 French GP.

There is his Lotus in the forground, at the end of a long straight, preparing to make a right-hander with Jimmy's head characteristically tilted into the turn. His face is a study in relaxed concentration (although his mouth is obscured by a protective handkerchief). At the other end of this long straight -- just emerging from the left hand turn -- is the pack of 2nd, 3rd, and beyond, clustered together as one would expect at such an early stage of an event. They are so far behind that it is difficult for the camera to find a balanced focus between Clark in the forground and the rest in the distance.

The race is just underway. Already Jim has it won. Such is an image that says everything one needs to say about why he was the greatest driver of his time.

It's complicated, doing it for your own personal benefit is not really a problem, but publishing on the Internet is a breach of copyright and a definite no-no. Even if you think you're not doing any harm. Having said that if copyright is acknowledged most reasonable people would be quite flattered and grateful for the free advertising and so would not make a fuss (just don't take this as a green light - paranoid ensign14).

Of course, I am eternally grateful for people who DO post images, but feel very guilty about it...

I think so. It's a black and white photo taken portrait style , not landscape.. I'm pretty sure it's Jimmy , as the driver has a blackish helmet without the front bit(forgotten the name of that bit, sorry) and I'm so sure it's a Lotus 25. The camera looks down from I suppose a bridge into the cockpit as Jimmy drives underneath. I don't think he's being ungentlemanly , it's more of a comic moment.

I'll have a search through the LAT archives tonight. I'm sure it's Jimmy or maybe I'm convincing myself?? What does the Innes Ireland photo look like?

I'm pretty certain the overhead pic in question taken from the bridge at Reims was a David Phipps shot so it would now be held by the Sutton Photographic archive. It's definitely not one of our Geoff Goddard shots at GPL. Try Sutton's. They're very efficient in my experience...

A glorious print of this photo proudly adorns the wall of the Millennium Shed.

It is my favourite racing photo of them all.

Ian..the "two finger" Innes Ireland picture was taken after he won his only GP at Watkins Glen in '61. He looks tired, dirty but above all extremely happy !! This is a man whose (mis) adventures would make an interesting theme for a thread.....

In a similar vein, I saw a picture published in the British national press a few years ago (Telegraph maybe - I only buy it for the crossword, honest) of Clark and Chapman sitting deep in contemplation on a pit counter somewhere; a really fine picture - has anyone seen that?

Also there is a picture of Chapman siiting on a pit counter with his back to a graffito which reads ''Forza Ferrari''. I've seen that very recently, but I forget where.

I have seen that photo in the last couple of days too. Seeing as how I only subscribe to three forums , this one, Racesimcentral's GPL forum and the Liverpool FC message board, I would think it's somewhere on the first two. I'll have a search..

But you guys may be interested in having a look at some of the photos on the following thread at Racesimcentral.

Yeah.. I've seen that photo. Is that where he's holding the trophy with Chapman in close proximity? Innes Ireland had the most amazing face. It looks so lived in and I'm sure that every wrinkle held an amazing story.

I'm pretty certain the overhead pic in question taken from the bridge at Reims was a David Phipps shot so it would now be held by the Sutton Photographic archive.

Thanks Doug. I had a look at the posters section on the Sutton archive last night. Can't get into the restricted section as I'm just a lowly IT bod and not a media guy (Unfortunately! Very envious of you guys whose jobs are part of the sport you love...) Nothing there regarding this photo but there were some amazing images.

I'm now certain it is Clark in 1963. I hope I can find it and show you guys. I just hope you think it lives up to the hype...

Have a good day.

Clark gave the V for victory sign for Phipps at Monaco '65, I believe. A great shot.

V sign a rude sign? Maybe if he made it the way Churchill did*...

* I saw a photo or two where he showed 'up yours', rather than normal V sign. I'm rather sure he did not *mean* it, but funny nevertheless...
