I booked a hotel in Montreal for the GP through the Montreal Tourism site and got through fine. The rate was great and the cancellation terms too. This is the confirmation and the response from the hotel.

From the Hotel

Dear Mr. Doe,
We are pleased that you would like to stay with us next summer during the
Grand Prix Formula 1 race weekend 2003, however the room accommodation you
have reserved had the wrong rate and cancel policy indicated.
Please note that during these dates the rate is $399.00 CAD plus taxes per
night and we do require an advance deposit for 3 nights of your stay which is
non-refundable.
We are terribly sorry for the confusion and would appreciate your
confirmation of these terms and conditions as soon as possible so that we may
confirm your reservation.
We look forward to having you stay with us.
Regards,
Isabelle DesCombes
Reservations Manager
Le Meridien Versailles-Montreal

Just a warning. The rates quoted on some of these reservation sites, even through tourism sites are misleading and IMO false advertising.

You need to make a stink. I would drop the tourism office a note. I would see what you can find out about the consumer laws etc.

I made a reservation last year (for the whole week) for $795 CAN. I couldn't believe it. I waited a couple of weeks then called to get a confirmation from the Hotel. They had my reservation and when the woman went to quote the price she hesitated for a moment and said that the price should be different for that week but oh well; here is your confirm #....

I think you'll find that if you don't relent they will probably give in and let you have it for the price they quoted (especially if you can get a bit of the law on your side).

Be a cheap-ass like me and stay at McGill. Hell I never spend more than a few hours sleeping in it anyways.

I had to bring this thread up again. Can you imagine that these guys charged for not cancelling my reservation. Clowns.
