Just after Chris Amon parted ways with the Ensign team in 1976 it was reported that he was going to Zandvoort to do some testing at the wheel of Boy Hayje's Penske PC3 in preparation for the Dutchman to drive in his home GP.

It was a commitment that was made when Hayje was going to have a try in the Ensign and part of the deal was that Chris would help set up the car.

Jonathan Palmer did some demonstration laps in a McLaren just before the maiden edition of the Masters of Formula 3 at Zandvoort in 1991. It wasn't a proper test, but it was the very first time I saw a Formula 1 car in action.

It looks more like Michele to me - Brian was chunkier, and Serra didnt have that much hair.

Sorry guys, I believe you're all wrong - I'm pretty sure it's Raul Boesel!

[btw the scene's Silverstone, and that should be Gustav Brunner squatting just in front of him...]

My uncle said me that the 3 following japanese drivers tested a formula one :

Kosuke Matsuura - BAR/Honda in december 2002
Jyuichi Wakisaka - Jordan/Mugen-Honda in 1998
Hideki Noda - Pacific/Ilmor in 1995

Does anyone possess times of these drivers and Pictures of these tests ?

Thanks a lot.

Vittorio Brambilla was first driver for Alfa Romeo. Very first test was at Balocco at end of May 1978 (as reported on Autosprint 22/1978 page 22). He was supposed to drive also in world championship, but he was seriously injuried at Monza (the same accident that killed Peterson) and he was replaced by Giacomelli. He went on testing Alfa Romeo until at least 1980 and he run some GP too (1979: Italy, GP Dino Ferrari, Canada; DNQ at USA East - 1980: Holland and Italy; plus Spain, but Alfa Romeo retired after first practice session)

Was Mansell a Lotus test driver in 1980? I think so, but I'm not sure and I have no time to look for info. I only recall he run Austrian and Dutch GP and DNQ at Imola.

Kousuke Matsura tested Bar 004-Honda on Sunday December 15 2002. He made 37 laps, his best time was 1'23"162. I have no photos.
Best time of this test was made on previous day by Kimi Raikkonen, 1'19"774, fastest Bar driver was Anthony Davidson, 1'20"304 on Saturday 14 and 1'21"804.
The question is: on what circuit? My source (Autosprint 51/2002 page 24) is quite confused and speaks about Catalunya and Jerez. I don't recall record on both circuits, but it shouldn't be too difficult to understand the right one!

As regards Jyuichi Wakisaka on Jordan and Hideki Noda on Pacific, do you recall more or less when (I mean at least which month) it was? Surely I have something, but it's a very long search...

Ciao,
Guido

First Jyuichi Wakisaka test on Jordan was Thurdsday February 19th 1998 at Barcelona.
He drove a Jordan 198 Mugen for 11 laps; his best time was 1'29"79.
Best time on that day was performed by Hakkinen (McLaren Mp4/13) 1'21"41; best Jordan driver was Damon Hill, 1'22"11.

Test on April 30 at Barcelona was his second test.
I don't know if he drove some more time.

In late 1990/91 Leyton House were offering their test seat to ANYBODY with £100,000. They offered the drive to a [better nameless] friend of mine and I'm afraid the first reaction was, "Hmm, so what should we do to get rid of Gugelmin?!"

Alain Menu did some testing for Williams GPE in 1994 [?] when he was driving the Renault BTCC car for them.

Johnny Dumfries tested McLaren at Silverstone on early November 1984 as a prize for his victory in Marlboro F.3 championship. His best time was 1'25"09, very slow because of heavy rain. He had 20 laps in the morning and only three in the afternoon (but I don0t know what day!) and he spun at least once.
It was not his first test, as he had already tested before Lotus and Williams, maybe also more than once.

Indeed he was. According to Hilton's book, Chapman spotted Mansell during a F3 (or F2?) race and invited him for a test and in the end signed him as a test driver. The contract also included three races in the third Lotus.

I had read somewhere that Dumfries tested for no less than three teams, but I didn't beleive it. It appears to be true! What's more interesting in that Dumfries became Ferrari's official test driver in 1985! The following year he signed for Lotus as a proper driver of course, and scored his first points in the Hungarian GP.

Just for the sake of being complete, Vittorio Zoboli did test for Jordan in 1994, but I think he was nothing more than a paying driver. I saw him do a test at Estoril in the last week of september 1994 (53 laps in two days).

I found a b&w picture of him testing the Jordan in the Portugese Autosport. My Portugese is not very good but the letterpress to the picture is:
Vittorio Zoboli, o italiano que pagou para per piloto de testes da Jordan, teve no ' Estoril uma das poucas oportunidades de ver seu esforco financeiro recompensado.
He turned out to be 8 seconds slower than Barrichello on the same day.

This was actually the same test in which Benetton did a three day test with Paul Tracy .

Vittorio Zoboli had also one race with Jordan: Motor Show 1993 at Bologna. More info and results are on Non Championship F1 races thread; this is the only pic I have (click to enlarge), the same I posted on that thread some post later:

Hy,

Four points

1

Guido, you wrote in Almost Moves -2 thread :

I found another Emanuele Pirro's "almost moves": he should have raplace Marc Surer on second Brabham from Canada or from French GP. He had some test at Silverstone before Montreal; here follows best times:
1st Senna (Lotus) 1'07"76

2nd Piquet (Brabham BT54) 1'07"84

(...)

14th Marc Surer (Brabham BT54) 1'11"59

15th Emanuele Pirro (Brabham BT54) 1'11"91

(...)
Piquet tested from Monday June 3rd to Wednesday 5th, Surer only on Tuesday (cloudy wheater) and Pirro only on Wednesday (maily rainy wheater).

Ciao,
Guido

I am interrested, when you will have time, in all the best times of these Silverstone June tests times.

Noda test a Larrouse against Emmanuel CLERICO at Paul Ricard in 1994.
I have the times, I will post it as soon as I found them.

I have read on an old newspaper that, in 1995 december 20th, Karl Wedlinger, HH Frentzen, Pédro LAMY and Kriss NISSEN tested Sauber on the Barcelona trak. I have never heard such an information. So, can anyone confirm that and can anyone give me all the times of this, or these, sessions on Barcelona in December 1995.

Thanks at everyone.

Not according to Autosprint (#1/1996 page 23 and 30): on that test there were 7 drivers on Williams, Benetton, Ligier and Forti.
Sauber in the same days was at Paul Ricard. They signed a contract with Johnny Herbert on Monday 18th and just after they had a 3-days test with both drivers, him and Hainz Harald Frentzen. I have no time about this test.

Guido, you have all the time you want  .

Thank you for these first informations.

I remember that kriss NISSEN had a formula 1 test, but i can't remember where and when. So, my old newspaper was wrong. Do you remember where, when and on board which formula 1 he made a test ?

I remember that Pédro LAMY test a Tyrrell with Nokia sponsorship, but, one more time I can't remember where and when.

About Noda, the Larrousse time at the Paul Ricard in 1994 were :
Emmanuel Clerico - Larrousse/Ford : 1'07"72
Hideki Noda - Larrousse/Ford : 1'08"11

Wasn't it for the party of the "new" Osterreichring named the A1-ring ?

Wasn't Nissen in line for a Zakspeed drive in 1986 or so before his big accident? That more or less finished his single seater career? Perhaps he tested one of those.

Just found an old news article in Grand Prix International about Roberto Moreno being presented as test-driver for Lotus as early as april 30, 1981. He had just signed a three year contract.

I think it's typical for Moreno that this was the thursday before the San Marino GP where Chapman choose not to enter his cars because of the legal problems concerning the Lotus 88, thus the signing of Moreno didn't get very much attention at the time.

Hy,

1
Andrew Gilbert Scott was named has Jordan’s test driver in August 1991 (Sport Auto n° 355 <08/91>).
Did he really drive the Jordan and does anyone possess the best times of the sessions where he drove that formula 1 ?
Does anyone possess pictures ?

2
Jonathan Palmer was officially named as test driver of Williams in April 1982 (Sport Auto n° 243 <04/82>).
This article says : « Palmer will be in the same position as Moreno and Scott for Lotus ».
Is that “Scott”, Andrew Gilbert Scott ?
Did he really drive the Lotus in test, like Roberto Moreno did it ?
If that was real, I suppose pictures exist like for “Pupo”.

3
J.J. Lehto tested the Ferrari 640 for the first time in July 1989 at Fiorano (Sport Auto n° 330 <07/89>).

4
Ga ry Brabham tested a Benetton-Ford (with “intelligent” suspension) at Pembrey in December 1988 (Sport Auto n° 323 <12/88>).

Thanks.

Dave Scott, whose crowning moment came when qualifying on pole for (I think) his F2 debut in 1983, but then stalling it on the grid. Don't think he ever tested the Lotus, may have been one of Colin Chapman's ideas of helping young British drivers, but I stand to be corrected.

As usual in winter 1979-1980 there were several test at Le Castellet (3300 m circuit).
Interesting drivers (for this thread) were:
  • Stephen South (Lotus 79 Cosworth) 1'07"7
    October 22nd to 25th 1979 - from Autosprint 44/1979 page 29
  • Elio De Angelis (Lotus 79 Cosworth) 1'08"60
    October 22nd to 24th 1979 - from Autosprint 44/1979 page 29
  • Jan Lammers (Lotus 79 Cosworth) 1'09"08
    October 24th and 25th 1979 - from Autosprint 44/1979 page 29
  • Eddie Cheever (Lotus 79 Cosworth) 1'10"51
    October 24th 1979 - from Autosprint 44/1979 page 29
  • Nigel Mansell (Lotus 79 Cosworth) 1'12"30
    October 25th 1979 - from Autosprint 44/1979 page 29
  • Rick Mears (Brabham BT49 Cosworth) 1'08"8
    December 13th 1979 - from Autosprint 51/1979 page 34
Lotus was looking for a second driver, it should have given a chance also to Mike Thackwell (Autosprint 43/1979 page 4), Alain Prost and Richard Dallest (Autosprint 44/1979 page 29), but I'm not sure they really drove.
After those tests, De Angelis was choosen for 1980 and Mansell signed an option for 1981.
Stephen South first F.1 test was in England (where?) on October 21st, driving an Ensign.

Any data on Elton Julian? Larousse test, sometime in 1994. I think Erik Comas was present.

Question about Perry Mc CARTHY

In my uncle archives, I have found that :

- In 1992 : "Briatore looked for a driver who possessed a "super licence". So, Perry have the opportunity to drive the Benetton at Spa for a one shot test"

- In 1993: Mc Carthy drove a Williams-Renault at Silverstone during January because of holidays of offcial drivers.

Anyone has info, eventualy pictures, of these tests ?

Thanks

I searched on Autosprint... I couldn't find anything. First 1993 test reported was at Estoril from January 25th to 29th, but Williams had both official drivers, Alain Prost and Damon Hill.
So possibly McCarthy had an unreported test.

As regards 1992... it's a too wide search!

Ross,
This is what GrandPrix.com says about Elton Julians Larrousse-test: (on behalf of editor Joe Saward)

Julian spent more time in Europe, racing in both British and French Formula 3 and did well in both. He moved up to Formula 3000 and even tested for Larrousse at the end of 1994, impressing the team with his pace in a test at Paul Ricard. He is still in his early twenties but seems to have run out of money and disappeared from the European scene.

If I was Bernie Ecclestone I would find out what happened to Julian and throw some money at him and get him in at Minardi - or wherever - so that there will be American interest in F1 when Grand Prix racing arrives.

It was at the beginning of April 1993 that Perry McCarthy was rung by Williams and he subsequently did two days of ABS brake development running at Silverstone.

Just after last 1994 GP, Laurent Aiello signed with Jordan as 1995 tester.
First test was Barcelona on December 8th 1994, on a Jordan 194 with a new 3000cc Peugeot engine: his best time 1'26"100; Eddie Irvine the previous day scored 1'24"100.
Then they went to Estoril, where on December 15th Aiello scored 1'26"070 and Barrichello 1'20"060. On that day, they should both had used old 3500cc engine; of course I don't think they were looking for quick laps.

I found (on Autosprint 1/1995 page 20) he tested at Le Castellet on December 21st 1994, even if on this test Comas was not present (are you sure it was not Emmanuel Collard?).
His best time on 3300. circuit was 1'08"380; I have just posted complete time table on Le Castellet / Paul Ricard test story thread.

It was between Brazil GP (March 28th) and Europe GP (Donington, April 11th). I have no time, photo or any more detail.
Maybe they hired McCarthy even if he wasn't their official tester because Prost and Hill were still coming from Brazil.

First of all, thanks at everyone for Perry Mc Carthy Williams’ test.
I am looking for more informations about his (? ) Benetton test.

Guido,

Excuse-me but I have a question about the times.

In the thread about Ultimate TEST DRIVER Thread! you wrote :

In the thread about Le Castellet / Paul Ricard test story you wrote :

22. Jan Lammers (ATS D3 Cosworth) 1'08"9

So, I would like to ask you :
- Did you make a mistake when you put these times and the formula 1 used, Elio and Lammers, in this thread ?
Or,
- Did you forget the times of Elio and Lammers on board the Lotus 79 ?

Thank you very much.

Théodore33, I confirm both post.

On Autosprint 44/1979 (so in my post on Ultimate TEST DRIVER Thread) there are timed scored only on previous week, approx from October 20th to 25th.

On Autosprint 2/1980 (so on my post on Le Castellet / Paul Ricard test story thread) there are best times scored by (nearly) all drivers who had a test on whatever day between October 1979 and January 1980.
De Angelis was faster with Lotus 81 than Lotus 79 and Lammers was faster with ATS that Lotus 79, so that's why both times scored with Lotus 79 disappeared in second post.
Of course, I don't know when Lammers and De Angelis scored their best times, I should look on all Autosprint from October to January, but I have no time to do it.

Ciao,
Guido

While looking for something else I found as follows (all info from Autosprint 51/1986 page 24):
  • Donington, December 8th-12th 1986: Benetton test

Four drivers tested Benetton BMW at Donington. Set-up was made by official driver Teo Fabi, then young drivers shared the same car. A fifth driver, Roberto Ravaglia, was invited, but he had to test his BMW M3 at Misano, so he couldn't be at Donington.

    - Teo Fabi 1'23"04 on Monday 8th (1'21"7 with a different car)
    - Emanuele Pirro: nearly the same time (no more info)
    - Andy Wallace 1'23"8
    - David Hunt 1'24"8
    - Giovanna Amati 1'33" (but she was the only one to drive only on wet track - 10 laps)

    Posted Image
    Giovanna Amati (click to enlarge)
  • Le Castellet, December 1986: Zakspeed test

Zakspeed is looking for 1987 drivers and it had a test at Le Castellet with Jonathan Palmer (official driver in 1986), Derek Warwick, Philippe Alliot, Kris Nissen and Volker Weidler. I have no times and pics.
By the way, 1987 driver were Martin Brundle and Christian Danner, both not present at this test.
