According to BMW's website former F1 driver Olivier Beretta has been signed as one of the team's test drivers:
As early as January 8 and 9 this year, Beretta once again sat in a Formula 1 car, the WilliamsF1 BMW FW24. In Barcelona, he did first tests in Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya’s vehicle. Then, from January 19 on, the 33-year-old will be part of the BMW WilliamsF1 Team’s testing crew.
Beretta has great experience to show for himself as a test driver. As early as ten years ago, the Monegasque was employed as test driver by the teams Lotus and Larousse. After his Formula 1 days, Beretta switched to sports cars where he mainly participated in the FIA GT Championships the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the American Le Mans Series. His employment at the BMW WilliamsF1 Team is restricted to the test drives in January.
Why him? Was he considered a good tester or does he have good connections with Williams or BMW?

Olivier Beretta?

Certainly not for the latter. He has been a contracted Oreca/Daimler Chrysler works driver since about 1996, having previously worked for the Courage factory after a handful of Grand Prix for Larousse. AFAIK he has never had any contractual relationship with either Williams or the BMW factory and its favorite teams (like Schnitzer).

The article mentions him testing last week in Barcelona. Miramas is BMW's exclusive test track.
