Hi,

I lend Colin McRae Rally 3 from friend and played it only one day, because eventually I didn't liked it.
Graphic was poor, gameplay was poor and no licenced drivers and WRC cars. And on beginning of the game is too few tracks and cars open.
But I liked damagemodel very much. I laughed my ass off when got loosen tyre and then followed it like Coyote chases Roadrunners

I had already WRC I and I did like that more than CMR 3, but went to shop and bought WRC II Extreme.
Wow! Licenced cars, drivers (except Colin McRae), real time service area, beautifull graphic, pretty good car handling, poor music.
I just played 14 rallies (3 stages on each) trought on beginners mode and Tommi Mäkinen won everything. :)

That was my opinion.

Next is yours. Take part on poll and explain. :)

We haven't gotten either game in the United States yet, so I'm glad I can get a preview of the games before they come on the market. I have a few questions:

What exactly is wrong with the gameplay on CMR3?

How many total stages does each game have?

One thing I noticed with the first WRC game is the tarmac roads are very wide, much wider than they really should be. Is this fixed in WRC II Extreme?

How exactly is the handling like in both games?

Thanks!

I too have played both and WRC II kicks ass!! CMR3 has only a couple things over WRC, but neither are enough to warrant a purchase. The car damage is better as is the in-car weather effects with the wipers, and the sound is marginally better....but that's it....really

WRC II has very good weather effects. You get droplets on the screen in chase and bonnet cams. The handling is much better. CMR feels very floaty and unrealistic. WRC is best enjoyed with a FF wheel...believe me! The dual shock cannot use the analogue function so the steering has to be digital which doesn't take too long to get used to. There are stages that go up to 15km!! That's usually about 8 or 9 frantic minutes. There's a 15km stage in Argentina.....in the wet! The FF wheel however makes beautiful use of the analogue, I absolutely love it. The game is harder than the original. You can also unlock 'prototype' WRC cars in the hardest level once it's unlocked. They have up to 800bhp!! and are basically evolutions of the current cars, so no stupid looking winged monsters or anything.

Overall, it comes down to what you want, CMR3 is too arcadie for me. WRC II has just about the right balance, I've yet to unlock the hardest setting but even in professional mode you will not win every stage and you'll probably find Sweden quite a challenge. It also has a cool quick race mode where the game randomly selects a car/driver/stage for you. There's loads more...so just stop torturing yourself...at the moment there's nothing better, until WRC III.

that stage kicks arse. the longest one from the catalan rally rocks too, get a nice sensation of speed. had a ball on that stage in a rally on medium level, swapping a 1/10th here and a 1/10th there with gronholm.

i havent played cmr3, but i DO like WRC2extreme.

the ONLY problem i have with it is it really doesnt take much of a touch against a wall (like the ones ya get on the side of the roads in the tight twisty tarmac stages) to not only stop you pretty much dead, but also ending up pointing the wrong way.
its like the slightest little touch pulls the nose into the wall, the arse comes around and your left stopped, pointing the wrong way.

dont have a problem with it as such, afterall, if you plough into a wall at speed you need some kind of penalty, but when all youve done is barely brush it, it gets slightly annying at times......esp if its at the end of a 8 minute stage, and it turns out to be the difference between a win and 4th.....

but thats rallying i guess

CMR3 doesn't feel like driving a car. Everybody who has driven real car knows there is something wrong in that game. Sorry to say but somebody never got the fact car isn't very difficult to drive - not even rallycar.
There are some weird feelings in WRC II too, but it feels more real than CMR3.

Total stages: I'm not sure about CMR3 because most countries and ss of those are unlocked and there are 'world rally events in USA' and so on because not having real license.
I think CMR does have 8 ss in every event. Some of those are reall specia stages. (I'm not sure)
WRC II does have 14 real rally event countries and number of special events depends on difficulty choose: beginner 3/ rally, pro (not sure, maybe 6?), difficult (unlocked till beating pro).
and best thing about those, they are real special stages. :)

Some of tarmac roads are wide some are not, but remember they are driven on public roads - which are of course closed for rally.

Handling: WRC II reacts pretty good on surface you are driving, even tarmac feels better than in most of rally games althought it's still possible to spin while turning too hard. Handbrake feels more better than in WRC I.
I can't say much about CMR3 because I played only few random stages (snow, sand, tarmac and gravel). Anyway, what I noticed car feels very restless in every surface. For example on straight, wide tarmac with speed less than 100 kph car just want to go anywhere else than I want. That's not right. and again there is weird and annoying fact in CMR game: you hit small tree and it should go broken but not - your car will get totalled.

Graphic: WRC II has very smooth and good rendered scenes and you really can see trees and road about km ahead.
CMR3 graphic is good too but way too much blocky and viewing distance much more short than in WRC II. And there's no good rendering in CMR3 neither: In-car view drivers and their helmets looks very messy but in WRC II everything is sharp with good rendering.

Which one is better?
It depends on which style you prefer more - Arcade or simulation.
CMR3 is way too arcade but WRC II can get closer to simulation although that's too close from real simulation too.
Hardcore Colin McRae fans will only accept CMR3, but as official licensed and good made WRC II is my choise.

I finally completed WRC 1 this week and treated myself to WRC2 extreme as a reward WOW! The look and the gameplay is incredible. I think the car handling is a lot more sensitive too. As for Colin McCrae, I have never really got on with this liscence at all.

Thanks guys!

I have CMR 1 and 2 for PS1, and I loved both of those games even though they drove completely differently. Sounds like CMR3 is really different from either of those. I may end up getting both, but definitely WRC II.

Just finished Monte CArlo Rally where I lost the lead to Panizzi (I'm Duval in a Focus) after thrre days of battling.

A question: How do you set the game to be for more than 2 stages per day? I can only choose between proffessional (2 stages/day) or Novice (1 stage/day) ... it looks like there is a third level but that I can't select, and not the number of stages each day either. Would be cool to drive more stages each day.

Also: Tyre choice. Is you only choice how soft or hard the tyres gonna be? Not choosing between wet weather tires, snow tires, slicks and so on? Haven't found an option for that.

:D
You hace two ways to choose expertmode (3 ss per day):
1st: Beat championship mode with Professional level.
2nd: Cheat and type "EVOS" in secrets option.

Tyre choise: You will have automatically right tires, but you can choose different compound.
According to manual there's 115 special stages in 14 rally event.

ps. I'm doing professional level and currently winning Swedish Rally with Tommi Mäkinen. Of course I won Monte too. :stoned:

Okay EVOS and before that win championship in professional mode?

Looks lime I'm in for a few hours ;)

Compared to CMR I find ti a bit difficult to get a feel for sliding the car in this game so far .... it all feels a bit like by chance and not much sliding on gravel and snow stages

Looks like they are not releasing that in North America - not yet.
Unfortunately, because that is very good game.
