Which of those types of start do you prefer? Standing (e.g. F1) or flying (e.g. CART)? Max Mosley was asked last year if FIA doesn't think to introduce flying start in interest of safety. And he replied: No, flying start is even more danger as there are higher speed reached (or something like that).
Well, in my opinion, standing start of formula one is greatest part of the race for me. It is drug and I feel like intoxicated, when red lights are growing up, my heart is beating as hell. Sometimes I feel that standing start of formula one race is better then sex :p So I vote for standing start definitely.

Well, I like start to formation lap as well ;) I remember I fell on my knees because of Rubens Barrichello in Spain and Great Britain last year ): :)

Standing all the way.

-More dramatic

-More fair for the competitors

-No judgement call on jumped starts

I dont see where a rolling start is better than a standing. Yeah a standing is slightly more dangerous than a rolling if someone stalls, but how many times does it really happen.

Ask anyone who has witnessed a grand-prix start in front of their eyes.
It's the most thrilling part of a grand-prix week-end.

Come on Tomecek, do you really need to have a poll on such a question on a Formula One bulletin board? :p

I'd like to see the cars all parked like in a car park, then all the drivers have to do a 100m sprint to the cars to start! That would make for some excitement! :D

my interest would be about 1/2 of what it is now if it were flying-starts.

This is the only part of your post that I can find fault with. What kind of man are you???? Everyone knows you should have removed the word "sometimes".

I love standing starts, but with launch control I could hardly give a toss about them. The introduction of launch comtrol was the single biggest disappointment for me.

With the impending rule changes I will care again about standing starts. Otherwise I see no difference.

This is a LeMans start. Used to be done at LeMans and at Sebring.

OOPS!

I accidentally voted flying, meant to vote standing... Probably a freudian slip* or something.

I do like standing starts, the anticipation of the lights going out & the cars revving like crazy, but I wouldn't mind seeing one or two rolling starts (not safety car induced) just to see if its any good.

As well as Flying and standing, there's also the rolling start.

Whats the difference you ask?
A flying start is a start at race pace.
A rolling start is a start at a set pace.

From what I've seen, and not experienced first hand, the standing start offers the most action, but also the most risk with incidents.

Flying starts are boring becuase there is usually no action or passing,
however, the rolling start leaves the cars bunched up, and allows overtaking opportunities down the front straight and into the first corner with much less risk of the standing start.

Standing start gets my vote though.

Silly question on an F1 board.I think that a lot of us could say that our initial fascination with F1 came after watching the auditory and sensual thrill of an F1 standing start.

One of life's ''keeper'' moments, seeing one in the flesh.

Agree with ehagar that launch controls helped spoil quite a few races last year -- for one thing, they FAILED, leaving excellent starters (in terms of skill) stuck on the grid.

I'll be glad when that shite gets stripped out of the cars.

Ross's post raises an interesting question:
At how many races over the past three seasons was a car left on the grid?

My impression is that the number went up after the introduction of launch controls.

My impression is also that this happened far more often than Mr. Stonefeld seems to think.

So in the past 18 months we've had a few more stalls on the grid, its hardly an increase when you look at the entire history of standings in GP racing

Standing starts - of course.

With TC and LC going later on this year we will see a return to the classic tyre smoking, engine screaming mistake inducing traditional GP start - whoopee. Now, if only they'd give them a gear stick to operate as well!!!

Why not indeed - although the previous smallest capacity engines used in F1 were the 1.5 litre units of 1961-65 and of course the 1.5 litre turbocharged units of 1977-88.
