Why do everyone say that MS set the fastest lap of the race?

Did Schumachers fastest lap not count, or was he infact not the fastest?

The Renault vs BAR comnparison is also quite interesting
Alsonso's PB was on lap 35 - 128.170. He subsequently stopped on lap 42
Jenson's PB was on lap 57 - 128.600
From what I read, many people - myself included - had been pretty impressed with the BAR's pace, not withstanding the off-target pit stop strategy
However, that is a country mile between the two.
I'm not saying that too much can be read into the stat, but for all the talk of who is the fourth best team, Renault must be looking forward to a race that is not screwed up with unstable weather and saftery cars

what he DID do was set a sequence of amazing laps with a damaged car while chasing kimi late in the race, and was fastest on track AT THAT POINT. While the damage was his fault, it does show the 'never say die' attitude that has made him so succesful.

as a hint, the laps Michael did after his pitstop when he had full tanks, new tires and free trackOriginally posted by Earthling
He might have set the fastest lap if Kimi wasnt in front of him. He couldnt pass him so he pit a little earlier when he still had fuel onboard.

lap 31: 1:28.066
lap 32: 1:30.392 (He did something wrong or was heldup behind Fisi??)
lap 33: 1:28.222
lap 34: 1:28.687 (held up a bit behind HHF)
with fuel load Michael could almost do 1:28.000 lap, surely with light fuel load he would have gone much faster than the 1:27.724 Fastest lap.

You sure of that? While the yellow flags didn't really play in their favour, I'd think that the 4-5 laps of '3 seconds advantage' that Michelin provided all its teams with at the start of the race would have made up for that, no? I mean, that was crazy seeing all the M-shod teams ripping thru the field

true but sometimes it works both ways... .
If a faster car is chasing you sometimes the driver in the lead cannot go as fast as he can either as we have seen many a time... .
ps does anyone have any speed trap data ? the merc did not seem too shabby this weekend... .

If you think JB won some sort of psychological battle with a faster lap, then why did he let JV sneak away from him on the previous lap? The BARs weren't racing and then suddenly JV does a fast laptime on lap 56. Jenson responds on lap 57 but it's too late, since the final lap was 58. Let's just hope Honda produces an engine that can be pushed for the whole race, not just for a few laps. JV had JB under control, the difference in lap 57 times was only a couple of tenths, when JV had a lead of one and half seconds.Originally posted by madmac
Interesting piece of ammunition for the JB v JV thread that JB clocked the faster lap time ;)

That shows he could of done high 1.26.

Not necessarily, you unfortunately seldom get to have low fuel AND fresh tyres at the same time.
The one kinda offsets the other.
Not that I think he wouldn't have gotten the fastest lap.

MS went off onto the grass at the Clark chicane on lap 32 - from trackside it was obvious he was pushing really hard before Kimi stopped.Originally posted by Jacaré
