I asked this question last year and was told that a conflict did not exist, but Murray band Brundle confirmed yesterday that Salo and Hakkers were far from best buddies.

I think martin mentioned something about a really big bust up in Formula 3000, but that must have been yonks ago.

Also I saw them chatting with each other in the parc ferme.

Does anyone have further info about what sparked it all off in 3000?

I read that they have been racing each other since they were kids, and are from the same town. Apparently they never liked each other at all, especially Salo not liking Hakkinen for some reason, probably jealousy!;)

I seem to recall that it was Mika S who didn't think very much of Mika H going back to their formative years in the lower formulae. Mike S thought Mika H had absolutely nothing between his ears. Don't know if that impression has changed over the years.

Please believe this already! The two arenot exactly friends, which is not all that surprising since they are very different personalities, but there is no hatred between them either. Both actually seemed to enjoy there little battle at Monaco.

The TV coverage showed them chatting to each other after the race. They may be rivals but they're not about to step outside.

I heard an interview of Salo where he stated that after F1 he figures that MH and himslf will be able to be a bit more chummy, but that there is no bad feelings between them. I guess that I can understand this.

didn't Salo, in a Tyrell, give his compatriot a little extra effort when the Mclaren driver tried to pass for position during Spa 97?

the MH book (from two years ago) speculates that Salo stole MH's girl.

Mila I think you got Schumacher and Frentzen mixed up?
(Schumacher edged in and stole HHF's girl).

It's not really surprising if Mika and Salo aren't the best of buddies (although I haven't really seen anything to support this, more than saying for example, Mika and Mazzacarone (just pulled a name out of a hat) aren't best pals). They got different temperaments, and probably different likes/dislikes after all. Salo being overshadowed by Mika may have something to do with it, but Hey! that's life.

AFAIK, based on rumour and hearsay and no substantiated facts whatsoever - Salo was as good as if not better than Hakkinen in F3. Hakkinen has a good car, Salo doesn't. Hakkinen looks better. Salo's a bit miffed.

Salo got the Ferrari last year put in a few good drives and thought he might have earned a top drive for this year. He got put in a Sauber (the Ferrari B Team). Salo's really pissed.

Although the two Mikas come from the same town they have never been buddies because of their age difference. Now it doesn't play a role but just think about yourself at the age of say ten, a six year old is not likely your no1 friend.

Their last battles against each other on the race track before F1 were at the British F3 championship series in 1990. häkkinen won the championship and Salo was second. I don't think that Salo needed to be jealous when they were younger, since they both were successful during their early years. I think that whenever they race for position against each other in F1, they both tend to give a little extra effort, they seem to get some motivation from racing each other. I guess they want to show who is the best finn.

no, Samurai, I got the book right, but I should have emphasized "speculates" because, in the book, they really seemed to be grasping at straws with this passage.

This is kind of a side-bar thing, but since I don't know much about their personalities, can someone tell me the differences in their temperments? Someone in one of the earlier replies mentioned this. I am just curious.

Salo has a reputation of being a lazy, guitar playing, beer drinking troublemaker who has had some troubles with local authorities and makes the headlines quite often here in Finland. He is Finland's Eddie Irvine. Hakkinen is a very friendly and modest guy who takes his job very seriously and he's not been linked to any kind of scandals = boring.

Didn´t Salo once loose his superlicense because he got caught driving after drinking in Britain? That´swhy he ended up in Japan.

Ha-ha - that's a really funny idea! I guess to earn this title Salo once got a little bit tiddly on 2 Peach Schnapps, and is rumoured to stay out with his girlfriend past 9.30 pm. Sometimes without asking her parents' permission!

MattC, if that is your view on Finland you sure as hell need to come here because I have never in my life heard an opinion that was farther from the truth...

Thanks for differentiating the two. I work with some folks who are located in Finland and they're very professional and friendly. Sounds like Mika H. fits into that category too.
