So many corners in F1 have been witness to spectacular maneuvers. Some of them have immortal names, but if you were to give them an honourary name to commemorate a particularly brilliant maneuver, which corners/sections of track would you name and how?

My picks:

Kemmel straight (Spa) --> Hakkinen straight (Belgian GP, 2000)
Veedol chicane (Nurburgring) --> Schumacher chicane (European GP, 1995 - plus, he designed the damn thing :p)
Turn 1 (Hungaroring) --> Piquet (Hungarian GP, 1986)

The last turn in Hungary: Mansell ('89).
Tamburello: Senna.
T1 Albert Park: Schumacher ('02 MS vs JPM).
Indy T13: Rubens ;)

Tamburello: Senna.

:( How about a scene of one of his best moves instead?

T1 Albert Park: Schumacher ('02 MS vs JPM).

Or Montoya (from a few laps earlier :p)

Indy T13: Rubens ;)

Ouch! Perhaps the S/F straight in Austria? Or, after the last race, Variante Bassa --> Barrichello.

Eau Rouge - Villeneuve
La Source - Coulthard
straight from La Source to Eau Rouge - Rosset
straight to Bus Stop - Schumacher

I think turn1 is named after Hungarian Renault driver Ferenc Szisz (first winner of a race called Grand Prix). This year turn1 will be modified into a hairpin anyways.

Good idea to name the turns, I very much like the history behind the names but I sure wouldnt rename them, if it is called Kemmel then Id stick to it, but on new tracks it would be nice to give names.

Does anybody know the history behind Anthony Noghes BTW?

Thanks! I was looking for the name, but I couldn't find it :)

I agree, that's why I thought we'd give them honourary names. I prefer the sound of "Kemmel straight" to "Hakkinen straight" ;)

The last turn in Hungary: Mansell ('89).

I think the turn where Mansell made that great move on Senna was turn 3, going up the hill. Nevertheless, I agree with your pick.

"Couthard Lane" = the pit entrance at Adelaide.;)

I like the Hakkinen Straight one! But it is a bit sacriligious (?) to rename historical turns.

How bout some names for the newer circuits like Sepang and (eventually) Shanghai & Bahrain then?

Its difficult to find the names, I have only seen the names once on a track map, I probably have to dig out a magzine from 1986 to be able to name the others, as far as I remember only the the first and the last turns were named. I might ask Geza Sury about this, he should know.

Ah, OK, I misunderstood.

Nice thread
Good info wawawa, interesting though is that the turn was renamed during the 90's(? year) It was originally called the "gasworks".

I remember Murray Walker making a disparaging comment during a race, about the Monaco residents not wanting to be associated anymore with such an unglamourous name.

As for hnourary names:
The new hairpin at Hockenheim could be called the Burger after JPM's tussle with Kimi last year (has a German ring to it[kind of] "burgered" up Kimi and relates to JPM all in one word).

T4? at Hungary "the grass cutter" or "Finn's revenge" for the battle these same two had there, just a few weeks later.

T1 Sepang "Firmans moment" after he successfully defended Trulli's overtaking attempt
T2 Sepang "Le Crunch"

I'd do it the other way round: Name all curves after sponsors and use the additional cash to REBUILD the worst corners for some exxxxxxciting racing.

Now that is a truly worthwhile contribution

Thanks, but I'm sure it was the last turn heading towards the S/F line. Senna pulled out to pass... mmm forgot (Prost methinks, I'll have to watch it again) while Mansell simultaneously did the same to Senna. Caught Senna totally off-guard. Mansell went from 3rd to 1st and won the race, iIrc. Good stuff. :)

kober: Excellent.

Not exactly sure where it happened - I don't think it was the S/F straight. I'll rewatch the tape.

As for the overtaking, from grandprix.com:

On lap 58 the pair [i.e. Senna and Mansell] came up to pass backmarker Stefan Johansson in his Onyx. The Swede was having gearbox trouble and just as the leaders arrived behind him the problem struck again and the Onyx slowed unexpectedly. Senna dived right but had lost momentum and Mansell, seeing his chance, went to the right of Senna. Mansell had the lead and went on to win.

Great opportunistic and very gutsy move

  Yeah, Johansson/Onyx, that was it. I don't always remember everything, but I knew it happened as Senna wanted to pass someone else while trying to hold off Mansell. Still haven't pulled out the tape to watch it, but I'm pretty sure where it was, so I'll stick with T14 being the scene of the spectacular pass, until I rewatch it and prove myself wrong (yet again).

I guess pretty much every corner at Silverstone can qualify for Rubens, Juan-Pablo or Kimi. Great stuff from them today

It was definitely on the run from turn 3 up the hill to turn 4. Johansson didn't get off the racing line on the exit of turn 3 and thus Senna got caught behind and momentarily hesitated. How Mansell reacted so quickly to the situation was incredible.
