I was wondering the exact same thing too! The guy wasn't making that much when he was driving. He must be a smart man or has some really good bean counters.

He developed a really fancy version of "lazer-tag" where you play war using light/laser guns that set off little buzzers on your uniform. He sold it later on for big $$$

Keep in mind with worth thats often not just raw cash and a good portion of anyone's worth is real estate and companies owned.

Yes but Scheckter always was a smart cookie. It wasn't an accident that he arrived at Ferrari and put himself in a position to win the title, while Villeneuve was there. A very shrewd operator.

From http://www.wsws.org/.../rich-a30.shtml:

The richest man in Britain is the Duke of Westminster, whose £4.4 billion fortune largely accrues from property in central London, he owns 300 acres of the most exclusive real estate in Mayfair and Belgravia. Demand for such addresses by the super rich shows no sign of receding. The Duke moves up from second place, overtaking Hans Rausing, owner of a food packaging business, who had been top of the list for the last two years.

Why isn't David Coulthard anywhere in the sporting list ? I would imagine him to be Britians richest sports star.

He spends it all wooing his floozies - note Irvine isn't there either ;)

Mr A, isn't Johnny Dumfries (John Colom-Crichton Stuart) , Marquis of Bute on the list? I thought his personal fortune was second only to Ecclestone or have they changed the rules in so far it's more business wealth (ie Rowling) as opposed to inherited/family wealth (ie the Queen)?

DC and the Swerve live in Monaco, that's why they're not in the list.

Irvine is apparently very well off, having wisely invested his F1 salaries

AliG:

I think DC have Irvine have disappeared from the list as they (a) don't have the £30m required to make it on to the main list (b) are both over the age of 30 so don't qualify for the Young & Rich list © have the wrong body parts to qualify for the Richest Women list :-) Thew fact they live in Monaco doesn't matter, they're still counted as British so are still included! All the same reasons why McRae and Burns do not appear.

As for DC being the rishest British sportsman, not by a long way. Lennox Lewis has £100m for starters.

Richie Jenkins:

Can't spot Dumfries in there.

Bernie was mysteriously not on it last year, not in the top 100 I think he forgot to pay The Sunday Times to leave him off this year.

I'm sure he was in it last year (it quotes £2,900 as his value last year). You may be thinking of their Wage List edition they also do.

And before anybody feels too sorry for his huge losses: he has moved up two places, because it was that kind of a year for the superrich ...

Well I can! I suggest you take a closer look at 264th place! Marquess of Bute (land) - £120million which means I was right - he's the richest British or British-based Grand Prix driver bar Ecclestone (and definitely one of the richest of them all)

You also missed off Patrick Head on your original list - he's 516th with £65 million.

I'm shocked that John Madjeski's (Mr A knows who I mean) has got more money than the Queen!

I actually know of the richest people - David Crossland who founded the company I worked for for quite a few years - considering his company is going bust he seems quite content to sit on his £128 million pound nestegg

(a) couldn't see Marquess (surely a title any self respecting driver would avoid ;)) of Bute for
looking

(b) I did have Head on my list, just forgot to type him up.
