BLACK, GREEN OR RED? [10/06/00 - 01h28 ]

Michelin to introduce coloured tyres?
The traditional colour of the tyres on Formula One cars, and any car for that matter is black, however, Michelin, who are set to enter the Formula one arena next year, have hinted at introducing a new colour scheme.

There is no technical reason why the tyres have to be black, they could actually be any colour of the rainbow and Michelins proposal to introduce different colours is mainly intended to make their products easily recognisable from that of their competitor, Bridgestone.

There is even talk of the French tyre giant adapting each set to the colour scheme of the cars they are intended for.

There also have been reports that the FIA wiil definately NOT change the tyre regulations this year.

This could be the worst thing to happen to formula1 !!! Coulered tyres yuk!

Can someone edit a picture to show us what it lookes like?

About 10 years ago, Benetton used painted tyres in several races. In this case, only the sidewalls were coloured of course, but the visual effect was weird to say the least!

I personnally think it would be a very cool thing. Cooler even would be if the different compounds (soft, medium, hard) and thread patterns (dry, intermediate, wet) were color-coded. It would be a lot more interesting for spectators and everyone in general, and it would eliminate the guesswork as to which car has which tyres...very cool indeed.

The reason the tyres are black is that carbon black (the pigment used to give the tyres a black colour) is inert and very cheap, coloured pigments cost an arm and a leg and can affect the chemistry of the rubber.
And coloured tyres would look horrendous!

Actually bicycle tyre manufacturers introduced coloured tyres a year or two ago. They actually look great when in combination with black.

I think they are planning on coloring the inside of the grooves. I cant see them doing the whole tire, its just plain stupid. BF Goodrich came out with a partly colored tire last year, and its selling like hot cakes. Perhaps Michelin has plans to do the same, and will promote the road tire with the F1 tire? Perhaps they will make colors induvidual to the team? Red stripes for Ferrari, BMW Motorsports for Williams? Now that would be neat!

Oh man, I have this horrible mental picture of a Jordan going off the track (natch) with bright yellow tires!

Eddie Jordan would pay double to get his hands on those babies!

I don't think it is a bad idea. It would be a great change and fun to watch. But....Is it F1??

I got to wondering what the colored tires might look like, so I fired up Paintshop and this is the result. Personally I don't think they look bad at all. However the lighter colored tires such as yellow looked like crap. The darker ones are much better.

If it makes F1 any more interesting, the FIA will sanction them for 'bringing the sport into disrepute'.

Thank you.

I think the Jordan with blue tyres looks really cool, but what would be really great would be different colour tyres for each driver in the team. Would mean those of us with less than perfect eyesight would find it easier to pick out each driver. I find it difficult sometimes with to differentiate between the helmets, especially when I find myself at a race with a less than perfect view behind some huge guy who won't sit still. (OK - I admit that I am vertically challenged!) But If the two drivers of the team had different coloured tyres then I would know immediately who was who even when viewed from behind, dissapearing round a corner (when the fat, tall guy in front stopped jumping around and sat down again!)

Sounds like a great idea.We can get green ones for Irv-Irish racing green,as opposed to that nasty Jag colour, aswell as pink ones for Herbert, because he's such a homosexual.Oh-hang on-he wont be in F1 next year!!Too bad!

I can't wait 'til 2002, when Bridgestone fights back with "mood" tires.

I sort of liked the way the Jordan looked so I tried a Mclaren. Purple seemed the best as it went well with the black. I also tried a Ferrari, but red tires just don't look that good.

More on the coloured tyres...BF Goodrich (US subsidiary of Michelin) has been selling the "Scorcher T/A" for over a year. As noted before they are a very popular custom/sport car accent. They've even become subject to an urban myth panic. City Council of Los Angeles looked into banning them because it was thought that gangs would mark territories by leaving coloured burnouts on the streets!

Colored bicycle tires don't have much grip at all in wet conditions, so they certainly wouldn't be used for rain tires in F1. In track cycling certain colored tires also lack grip on certain tracks even in the dry. From what I have read, you need carbon black in your tires to get the best grip. So I doubt we'll be seeing colored tires in F1.

Well, if it gives less grip, then we can be sure that we will see colored tyres next year, atleast if old Maxie get to decide...

Hahaha! What the heck, they might as well do it. While they're at it, make all cars two-seaters and put a scantily clad pit babe in seat #2 to wave at the audience. Oh, and put big billboards up over the front of the car. We know the FIA doesn't give a flying &^%$ about racing anymore, might as well make the parade as pretty and profitable as possible.
