Well, the american microbrews in the German/Belgian/Dutch styles are pretty damn good.....try "Hubsch" out of Davis, CA; "Fat Tire" out of Ft. Collins, CO; "Dominion" out of VA; "Ommegang" out of Cooperstown, NY; etc etc etc

dosco,
We have some micro breweries here in Chicago, but I don't care much for any of them either. Goose Island is probably the biggest, but can't stand their stuff. I'll try some of your suggestions. Thanks

Are fans permitted to bring into the grandstands beer and wine purchased off premises?

This is a true story from last year...

Saturday afternoon, qualifying ended some time ago and mechanics are hard at work.
Then, a high-pitched sound gets their attention. Startled, some mechanics come out of their garages and look around to see where that noise is coming from.

They suddenly realize its coming from across the race track - in the stands !

Halfway up the seats, are three people with some a machine of some kind. One of them reaches down and presses something and they hear that sound again...!

What on hell could it be ? :

One of them pours something into 3 glasses...yes kids, they are drinking Martinis :drunk:

I've seen coolers so big they had them in wagons. Some people's picnics are pretty elaborate. I sure hope they still allow us to bring our own. Those little cups they sell in the stands would get pretty expensive.

Problem is you have to have cans, and there isnt a single decent beer sold in cans. Definatley not in the US.

Tifosi,
I've found Heineken, Becks, and Grolsch in large cans at grocery stores on the way to the track. I don't know how fussy you are but they taste OK to me in cans.

I was wondering if anyone can suggest clubs with live music? Alternative or New Wave prefered. Yea, I know I'm so '80s.

One thing everybody should bring is waterless soap. Not all the toilets have them. I saw them in 2001 but not last year.

Unfortunately, there aren't too many clubs w/ live bands in the area.
If you really want to enjoy the MTL nightlife......head for St-Laurent Boulevard ( aka The Main ).

Trust me, you won't get bored there....I never do :D

Otherwise, you can always catch a glimpse of :stoned: zzy at the Bell Centre ( 14 June )

Little help from a native needed. I have yet to visit Mont-Royal when in Montreal for the GP. What Metro stop would get us closest and is it long walk from the Metro to the Park? Thanks in advance.

Here are 3 options:

You can walk up to the mountain via Peel St. From there, you can take the path that leads all he way up to the top of the mountain. ( scenic route...long walk... ! )

You can take the orange line Metro ( towards Henri-Bourassa ) and get off at Mont-Royal. Proceed to bus # 11 ( east ) which will lead you to the top of the mountain ( easy way up...no walking until you get to the top ! )

Take bus # 55 ( north ) on the corner of De Maisonneuve and Jeanne-Mance and get off on the side of the mountain near the statue on Parc Ave.

You can view the bus routes here: STCUM

For all its plusses, Montreal is not endowed with a great live music scene. Loads of local stuff of sometimes great quality, but not many touring bands come here.

Places to check out though, usually have some live alternative music most nights

Cabaret Club - on St. Laurent just south of Sherbrooke, actually part of the Comedy Museum
Club Soda - St. Laurent just south of Ste. Catherine
Cafe Campus - Prince Arthur, just east of St. Laurent - also great is Petit Campus, one floor down
Foufoune Electronique - goth and hardcore mostly - Ste. Catherine just east of St. Laurent.

Best thing to do is pick up either Hour or Mirror tabloids (free) when you get into town....they have complete listings.

Thanks Bogman. I'll check out those papers. I'm kind of spoiled coming from Chicago. We have some pretty decent clubs here. I'm really just looking for something away from the Crescent St. scene. I've done that for the past eight years, and while fun, I'd like to try something different. Keep the rain away. It might make for a great race on TV, but it's no fun sitting in the stands in it.

My pleasure, Dick. I used to be "in touch" with the music scene in Montreal, but am getting old (36) and now live 2 hours away (still have a pied a terre in the city though!).

If you're at the Atlas shindig Thursday night I'll be able to point you in the right direction better for some non-Crescent St. nightlife. Other than that I'm sure cheezy poofs is more in touch with the local scene (although I did see a few great alternative bands at Club Soda last week).

I would think Cafe Campus or Petit Campus (same building) may be your best bet for cheap acts. Speaking of cheap acts.....Teazers anyone?

Hi Folks! Sorry 'bout that, only took me a month to notice this thread!! Damn! Why didn't someone PM me?? :

Oh well, I'm here now but cheesy poofs and Bogman seem to have all the tourists under control!

Oh ya, in case you're as clued-out as me, there IS now a "Canadian GP" thread up in the RC Forum and damn are my fingers tired from typing!! Oops, now I'm starting to sound like 'Fisti, glad to see he's still whining! He wouldn't be 'Fisti if he weren't whinin'!! :p

Don't forget to e-mail me for your Atlas VIP Pass to the Hard Rock Cafe, if you haven't already. (See the thread in RC for info).

Ciao for now, see you later this week!!
