Chaps,

I'm doing some research on the RAC British Hillclimb Championship 1947-NOW. I've got the winners of each Championship, but not each round. Before I spend aeons trawling all my books, mags etc, I was wondering if anyone already had this info, or could point me at someone who has.

The more info (places, cars, times, etc), the better.

If nothing is forthcoming I'll do it myself and post something here when done, so you can email me for a copy if you want then.

cheers,

Gav.

Chris Masons "Uphill Racers" should have all the results to 1990. Chaters currently list it at £19.99 (whereas Mill House Books have it at £50) which could be a good investment if no-one else has the info.

Pete,

Thanks for the advice, in fact I've already got it. It's one of the best motor sport books I've got, and is "required reading" for any Hillclimb fan.

cheers,

Gav.

Paul Sheldon and Duncan Rabagliati of "The Black Books" fame, produced "A Black Book" on the Hillclimb Championship 1947-1994 (with an appendix listing British Sprint Championship results).

I know some of the Black Books are hard to get these days and I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't one of them, but like all of their work it's worth tracking down.

Failing that...I have the winners (and indeed full run-off results) of just about every round up to right now, so tell me what you want and when I have a spare hour or twelve I'll send it.

Right now I'm starting from scratch, but hope to get all the winners, at least, from the Chris Mason book. Whatever you have readily to hand would be nice, otherwise I'll let you know when I've run out of source data here. Thanks for the tip on the Sheldon/Rabagliati book - you are right in saying they're 'hens teeth' these days, but I'll give it a go, especially as I have nothing on Sprinting yet.

Thanks.

It's all written down in what English teachers of the seventies laughingly called "my handwriting", but I have no problem with typing in a bit at a time as long as you have no objection to having to hang around waiting for it.

I don't have anything on sprinting either, other than the Sheldon appendix. Some people jot down all sorts of stuff (and thank heavens they do) but I've only ever bothered with hillclimbing on the basis that everything else I can either get elsewhere or I'm not interested. Must be something to do with growing up a few miles from Shlesley Walsh...

The British Sprint Championship blows my smug theory out of the water though, as even Sheldon himself has a bit of a rant at how mind-numbingly difficult it was to get the data he managed to lay his hands on. Some of the years are missing a few rounds, a lot of them are restricted to winners or top three only and the entire 1981 season is missing.

Of course, if there's anywhere you'll find the answers, it's TNF. This place is just incredible.

There was a copy of that particular Black Book in Foyle's last time I was in there (Feb/March-ish?)

Alan,

I don't want to put you to any trouble at all, but if you do get around to compiling your handwriting into electrons, I'd like a copy, whatever, whenever. Through this post I've also had the offer of a loan of the Rabagliati/Sheldon book, and I'll see if Foyles still have that copy, so I'll let you know how I get on with that before you spend time on it (unless you were doing it anyway).

My interests incidently are major British National single seater championships, big stuff such as F.Libre, 5000, Aurora F1, Group 8, F3000 and the Hillclimbs & Sprints these sort of cars competed in.

cheers,

G.

No problem, like I say I'm happy to do it, I just can't promise it'll all be in one go - in fact I can promise it won't, your patience on the other end will be tested before mine!

I do have the British F3000/F2 series results from 1989-94; top six finishers, pole, fastest lap. So do you probably, but if there's anything you need, shout. I don't have anything from the 1996 series which Gareth Rees won.

Working on the assumption that you'll get the Sheldon book from somewhere, I'll start the hillclimbs at 1995 where the book stops. That covers eight seasons plus what we've had of this year and if we get up to date before you've seen the book then we'll start working back!

I'll do the results in the same format as Sheldon, which is -. We had a thread on this recently and I have to say I'm not convinced that I like this method either, but it's consistent with what you'll see if you get the book so I'll live with it. I also haven't spent much (well, any) time formatting each line, it's text-space-text-space-...

I should add that the source for many of these will be Autosport which I know sends some TNFers into apoplexy. Most of the Shelsleys, Prescotts and Lotons are first hand due to my family ties to Shropshire, along with some Barbons and Harewoods (as I now live in the North East and these are easy to get to) and the occasional Doune (as my wife is from Aberdeenshire - Fintray come back!) but the majority of these meetings...I wasn't there.

Finally, the year end points tables I did myself - Autosport tends only to do the first few places of course, so any errors in adding these points up are entirely mine.

So, here's 1995, the year in which the Champion was a future European Touring Car star and in which we sadly lost the very talented Mark Colton :

Hi Gav

Chris Townsend and I are collating all the UK F5000 results and would appreciate any help or additional information you might have. You can check progress at http://www.oldracingcars.com/f5000. PM me if you're interested in exchanging information.

I have some British Sprint Championship information but it's from Autosport so you may already have it.

Cheers

Allen

From my experience Motoring News gave better coverage than Autosport to both
hillclimbs and sprints [certainly in the 1970s] so you might want to do comparative
readings of those sources. Usually they devoted a full page to a national hillclimb.
For anyone living in London the National Newspaper Library in Colindale has a
complete run of the magazine, and you can get a day membership if you go along
with a driving licence or similar. [though it can take an hour or two for the volumes
you want to come up from the vaults.]

As Allen has observed we often have detail on particular chassis that competed in
these events - mainly F5000s, but because of my obsession with completeness
I also follow through the history of F2, Atlantic and F3s in hillclimbs and sprints
where possible.

Alan L, the search is on for the Rabagliati/Sheldon book, so thanks for the 95 results and anything else you put together. As far as F3000 is concerned, I'm only missing 89 and 96, but hope to sort that soon, in which case I'll post them. Thanks again.

Allen B, your oldracingcars site has been on my "favorites" for ages and I avidly look out for the updates. I'll try and cross reference it with what little I have, and if there is any assistance you need, mail me.

Cheers guys,

Gav.

If you are still looking for the BRITSIH SPRINT CHAMPIONSHIP results then try the BMSA website on www.britishsprint.org where I have compiled the fullest results on championship events possible. There are some blanks so if you can fill in the blanks so much the better.

Round 2 Wiscombe Park, Devon April 26th

Championship runs abandoned due to rain

No, Championship contenders refused to take part in class runs or championship runs. (Having entered an oversubscribed event and thus prevented others from competing).

If the event RS2000 is talking about is the one I attended then there are a couple of points to consider.

1. the event was NOT over subscribed

2. there were some class runs as ONE of the Leaders contenders insisted on running. This meant they all had to make at least one run. This was rather odd as some drivers who had refused to run as Championship contenders found themselves trundling up the hill for one timed run!

The whole event should have been cancelled due to the wether but as there were so many people involved in making the decision it naturally was the wrong one!

As Enzo Ferrari said 'You must always run an organisation with a committee. That committee should be made up of an odd number of people. The number on the committee should be less than THREE.

The event was fully subscribed and entries were thus not available to those who wanted to enter after the previous days NatB cancellation. The event most certainly should NOT have been cancelled. Events are not run for a dozen single seaters. I recall one registered contender decided to run and break the boycott but had technical problems and didnt. A very large contingent of competitors from the cancelled previous day stood in the Esses and flapped their arms and made clucking noises when all the voluntary non-starters were announced. The conduct of most registered contenders was a disgrace to the sport. Its England: they have a choice, run in the rain and the damp or dont enter. End of story. Nearly all hillclimb venues are oversubscribed today. If sprints are not, that is the only place for such people. There is a need to ditch the rose-tinted spectacles that too many seem to view this branch of motorsport with.

Stephen, I had a look at this site a few nights ago, and I highly recomend that others TNFers do likewise. It's an invaluable source of data on a often neglected area of the sport

Good Work.

Of course, if there's anywhere you'll find the answers, it's TNF. This place is just incredible.

Oh no! Guilt! Guilt! Guilt!

Yes, I didn't finish the postings on this did I? And I nearly got away with it too...

I promise to take this up again...but not tonight...(the village at the bottom of our hill was flooded out yesterday after the Tyne got bored with its usual course - Monday is the day I usually leave the car at home and bus to work, but I'm going to have to try and find out if they'll be coming through to us in the morning).

I wasn't there but I have driven Wiscombe in the wet and it is a dreadful surface. When the Top 12 blokes are doing 100mph towards a farm gate and driving on swarfega then I beleive they have right to pull out, under/oversubscribed or not. There have been a few major incidents at Wiscombe over the years which haven't resulted in major injury to drivers or spectators even if the cars have been badly damaged (David Grace 2 eyars running in the 1990's I think). They've been lucky.

If they are not prepared to run in all conditions they should not enter or should enter in different types of car they are happy to drive. That applies everywhere, not just at Wiscombe (where the suggestion of an extra summer date to accommodate a club event and a Brit Ch event materialised as another of the interminal 2 day Brit meetings that are currently being criticised by others on another forum). Arguably the biggest crisis facing UK motorsport is the lack of speed venues to provide an affordable entry level for newcomers (who at one time would have started in road rallying). The South East quarter of the country now has no hill climb venues. The closest one at Gurston Down is the only UK venue not to run classes for road cars! 2 day meetings there and at other venues within some sort of reach like Prescott and Wiscombe do not impress too many newcomwers anymore than people who see fit to enter in cars they are not prepared to run with in all conditions. Please dont tell the people who slaved all winter to replace fences (or the spectators who paid to stand behind them to see these cars not run) that they are lucky not to have had injured spectators! Wiscombe has been partly then fully resurfaced of course (and as a result I have not won a class there since!). Race circuit sprints can cater for large-engined single seaters. We will have no track licences for new hills at this rate if safety has to continue to cater for near F1 cars.... just in case they feel like running....

This really isn't the appropriate place to be having this discussion.

But as a driver I have an absolute right to elect whether to run or not. If a club wants to ensure a show for its spectators it should be paying starting money.

I’ve just been trying to get my head round the 1949 RAC Hillclimb Championship. Can anyone confirm (or correct) the following, please.

There were 5 rounds:
11 June Shelsley Walsh
25 June Bo’ness
21 July Bouley Bay
27 August Craigantlet
11 September Prescott

Drivers had to register and nominate before the season started which 4 out of the 5 scheduled rounds they could score on.

The final points scores were as follows:
1 Sydney Allard 39
2 Dennis Poore 35
3 Stirling Moss 29
4 Joe Fry 28
5=Archie Butterworth 22
5=Peter Walker 22
7 Raymond Mays 15

Wasn't Bo'ness on the 16th July?

I think the scoring may have been 4 out of five to count. e.g. Allard dropped Prescott as it was his lowest score. Only one other driver besides Allard went to Craigantlet thus all the other drivers counted the four remaining scores. The driver who went to Craigantlet with Allard, Peter Walker, missed two other rounds so he just had three scores to count!

If you think that is difficult try figuring out the scores etc when EVERY driver who broke the existing course record from the start of the day in the run-off got an extra point! Great so long as you knew the course records!

Ho Hum! :rotfl:

Bo'ness definately June.

Re: the scoring. In 1948 (according to Austen May in Speed Hillclimb) they did have to select events to score.
Autocar's intermediate points listings in 1949, eg after Bouley Bay, do not include any points Allard might have got at his worst event (the first round at Shelsley, not Prescott which he won) which surely it should have if they were going to drop scores.
However, was Autocar correct, or was it working it out to old rules?

I now seem to have answered my own question, while looking for something else. An item on the British Hill Climb Championship in Iota magazine February 1951 states:
"This year the method of scoring will be modified so as to avoid the anomaly of last season when Wharton beat Denis Poore at Bo’ness but did not gain any points. Entrants will not have to nominate hills in advance but will be allowed points on their four best performances at the six nominated climbs"

So, from 1948 to 1950 it would seem that competitors had to nominate which hills they wanted to count scores from in advance ( I haven't looked at 1947).

Another good source of details on hillclimb and sprinting is the Speedscene magazine. This is the club magazine of the Hillclimb & Sprint Association (HSA) and covers both National championships in some detail. Old magazines are hard to come by but worth ferreting out!
