10:15 : Ralph Firman emerges as soon as pit lane opens
10:16 : The two BAR drivers follow close behind
10:17 : Michael Schumacher is back on track...
10:22 : A very bad accident for Jenson Button!
10:23 : The BAR hit the barrier at the end of the tunnel and veered across the track and into the wall
10:23 : The young Brit is still in the car surrounded by medics
10:25 : There is very little left of the BAR and the stretcher appears....
10:29 : There are looks of concern in the BAR garage as Button remains in the wreckage...
10:33 : Jenson is finally removed from the car and transported to hospital
10:35 : The BAR is being removed from the track and the session should restart shortly
10:36 : It looks as if BAR boss Dave Richards has tears in eyes....

David Richards has stated on French TV that Jenson is okay and is under going checks. However, he doesn't know if the young Brit will be able to qualify this afternoon

That sounds good. :) Hopefully he's only bruised.

What if Button can't do the second qualifying? Does he start at the back on sunday or do BAR put Sato in the car?

11:12 : Jenson was taken to the circuit medical centre before being taken to the Princess Grace hospital in Monaco. It is not known what caused the accident but it has been suggested that a suspension failure or a puncture made him lose control.
11:11 : Button's father was watching the incident from the BAR-Honda motorhome, and said he had been told by the team his son was in a good condition.
11:11 : Button is said to be fully conscious and in good condition. He is understood not to have broken any bones
11:10 : Now the second BAR of Jacques Villeneuve comes to a halt after nudging the barrier...no major damage thankfully, but his session is over

I think if Jenson is not racing on Sunday, then BAR can put Sato in the car. But if Jenson can race on Sunday but can't qualify today, then he will probably start in the pit lane!

Firstly I an happy to hear that JB is okay . No bones broken as well - which is very good. Hopefully he has no concussion or haemorrage in the brain ....... Can't see him taking part in the afternoon quali though - the report suggests that the accident was huge ! :|

After I read the first line of this thread about DR spilling tears I was feeling very bad. But all is ok thankfully.

And as if that wasn't enough for BAR - JV nudged a barrier as well - someone said he had a difference of opinion with the barrier - very funny way to put it ...... :)

According to pitpass that's so

We hear that Jenson Button will not take part in qualifying today.
The English youngster will have hydro-therapy treatment this afternoon, and then tomorrow will be given a medical examination by Sid Watkins. If he's given the all-clear he will be allowed to start the race from the back of the grid.
We understand that it is the sides of the cockpit that prevented serious injury, however Jenson's feet took a serious bruising in the crash.

Yeah, seeing it after you know he's OK ain't that morbid.

Remember Taku last year with the team orders? It's pretty easy to have a huge crash if you hit the ARMCO and veer sideways, then you go and hit the walls.

What I've read so far is that he is OK but will miss qualifying.

I haven't seen a replay of Button's accident. Has anyone heard any thing as to the cause of Button's accident. Was it a suspension faliure? Down to driver error? Button clipping the armco entering or exiting the tunnel?

On tv it looked quite bad, first impact was straight from the side. Maybe HANS device helped him survive?
Was the same accident as Karl Wendlinger, same place, same speed only side impact. Hope it doesn't end Jensons career, like wendlingers....

For AtlasF1 subscribers, if you look at this pic, it looks like Button has turned his steering wheel 90 degrees, but the front wheels are pointing almost straight ahead. Or is this just me?

Wendlinger was in a coma for 18 days or so after his accident and never really was the same afterwards. ): Since Button never lost consciousness I don't think the accident will have any long term affect on him. I think the HANS probably did help Button in the crash.

Dammit, not the kind of news I want to read when I wake up in the morning.. :(

With a bit of good fortune, maybe we see him in the race tomorrow. If not, well let's hope two good weeks of taking it easy will get him on his feet for Montreal.

DR is saying Jenson could race tomorrow but I can't see it happening. From the photo's it seems a very heavy hit. He would have a very stiff neck tomorrow morning and 70 odd laps around Monaco would be very tough. I think Syd will stop him racing. Shame when he was going so well on Thursday. Hope he is back to full fitness for Montreal

IIRC....most teams have their back-up driver present on Saturday...and then following quals they typically take off. This is why you usually see Wurz hanging around in the McLaren pits over the weekend...and then he flies out on Saturday.

I know B.A.R. ain't got a lot of cash....but this is the biggest race...and I'm REALLY surprised that Sato isn't on hand. How about this....go over to Irvine's yacht and get his butt in the car....

JB :( He was on such great pace this weekend  but then it all went horribly wrong. I was sooo disappointed for him, he was one of the stars of the weekend and made his part to make it all worth watching.

The video is on f1onboard.com in the video archive. Much faster download. It's in slow-mo so it's hard to see how hard he hit the barrier to the right of the chicane. I don't think it looks like he hit it that hard, but the condition of the car tells me otherwise. He also exited the tunnel fine, so it's hard to tell where he lost it.

All indications from the interviews with Willis & Richard say Jenson will race tomorrow, but I'm flummoxed - where IS Sato & WHY is he there & not at Monaco? If Sato is a fair distance away, why didn't BAR bring Davidson as well just in case? They understandably want Button to race but they'll look a mite stupid if they only do end up having one BAR starting when they could've had 2, especially in a place that has a high attrition rate.
Probably all academic anyway, but a reserve driver, even if he has nowt to do, should be at the circuit as that is his "role"??

Everything I've heard supports a driver error, I guess he clipped the wall on the right before losing control.

I heard Sato is in London. It was said on Dutch TV that Richards said they didn't want to put the reserve driver in the car anyway, even if Button wouldn't be able to race tomorrow. They think Monaco takes too much time to get used to, besicly they didn't want to do that to Sato.

In the video he appeared to be completely still after the wreck, helmet down.

Yes indeed, many g's. Nausea is also one of the most common symptons of suffering a concussion. I suspect this is the case. Racing the day after a concussion is not very wise. I hope BAR, Jenson, and the doctors make the right decision, and keep him out of Sunday's race.

Dunno, if they fill his car to the brim AND he can get past both Minardi's . . . . .

No sense in that. They just need to fill it enough so that he can make the race in a single stop. With just 20 laps of fuel, he should be able to get by them. But perhaps his best bet would be to take on successive light fuel loads in hopes of a few safety car periods.
