we get espnstar for f1 coverage in asia.

our dear commentator, steve slater, kept on saying that a lap of monaco would require 700 gear changes. can anyone help me to believe that ??

Well, lets assume an average lap of 78 seconds. That's about 9 changes per second if 700 is correct, does that sound right?

Steve Slater makes about three howlers per race but that one was real gem!

He must if been misreading his cue cards... 70 sounds about right for a lap of Monaco.

i would roughy say : no. of corners x no. of gears in the box x 2 (down&up)

yeh ! the other classic one is on lap 69 when they showed ron dennis in front of the monitor which shows the cars on track in a graphical format. poor old steve thought it was the telemetry of kimi's engine. he said it looks green so kimi's engine is ok !!

The only time a 7 speed gearbox is not changing gears that rapidly is when full blast on a straight in top gear. That happens at Monaco like.... never. I could swear that they said in Gran Prix (the movie) that there were around 70 gear changes a lap at Monaco.

I could be wrong.

Well they used to say 1800 for the race around 1990

1800 / 78 = 23 a lap

I added a fairly generous "they have one more gear now"

I just fired up Gran Turismo 3 and ran a lap of Monaco with a 1994 Williams F1 car and counted 61 gear changes in a lap. And that car only has a 6 speed gearbox.

I reached top gear only twice. Up the hill to Beau Rivage and in the tunnel.

Actually they are quite a bit wider than what would normally be used at Monaco... I didn't want to mess with them just then. Current ratios on that car give a top speed of 224... I didn't break 180 the whole lap so there should have been even more shifts.

During the Monaco race the average # of gearchanges pr. car is 3.000 during the race.
3000 / 78 = app. 38 changes pr. lap.

If there is 4 corners on a track, the teoretical number of gearshifts should be something like
(7*4)*2 = 56 gearchanges. But they dont go thru the whole gearbox on each corner, while braking and gearing down, and accelerating and gearing up

See the thread "Monaco Tech" in the Technical forum. There's a nice closeup of Nick Heidfeld's telemetry. Maybe you can count the gear changes. ;)
