Aaahhh - I suspect that, if he had a title at all, far from being born into it, Herr Lindermann had actually bought it...

What's the German for 'social climber'?

DCN

Social climber means "gesellschaftlicher Aufsteiger" in German, in a less polite way you would call him "Emporkƶmmling" what might be the equivalent to a "Johnny come lately" or "parvenu" in English?

Another titled driver not mentioned so far is Ferfried Prinz von Hohenzollern, he raced touring cars (mostly BMW) in the late 60Ā“s and early 70Ā“s, heĀ“s the uncle of Leopold von Bayern

... although he's just two months his senior!

And as this thread has been bumped up from 2014, perhaps we really ought to add  Sir Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton MBE.

I understand that he has done a bit of motor racing and may still be competing?

Lewis certainly did not buy his title, other than through talent, dedication and application.

I mentioned to a titled friend of mine that I wondered what the German might be for 'social climber' (as above).

Apologies for yet more DCN vulgarity, but it wasn't me, it was those big boys.

He suggested 'Ummm - Ein Vankpot?'...

May I tactfully suggest "von Geldern"?

Titles??  In most countries not given. A few Aussies, Sir Black Jack and a couple of Kiwis long after they retired.

So really only some Euro countries and the UK.

No Lords etc in any other country.

So in reality who the hell cares!!

I commented earlier that Aussie Journalist Mike Kable could almost be counted as Australian aristocracy being the direct descendant of a "first fleeter", a bit like the importance some Americans give to being descended from someone on the "Mayflower".

His niece, my late partner Antonia Royes-Kelly, aka La Contessa di Prisdocimi, claimed that her Italian great grandmother and thus Mike's grandmother had that title. Notice the claimed bit, Antonia had a habit of signing in using that title in nightclubs...

Somebody clearly cares enough to vent their spleen.

One of the drivers of the LMP2 winning car at Le Mans this year and winner of the LMP2 class in the World Endurance Championship was Ferdinand Habsburg.  Or, to give him his full name: Ferdinand Zvonimir Maria Balthus Keith Michael Otto Antal Bahnam Leonhard von Habsburg-LothringenHeir apparent to the headship of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine.

The Emperor of Japan, the King of Thailand, the King of Malaysia and the various royal personages across Africa, not to mention all the many maharajahs and rajahs in India, would all beg to differ as would their various supporting aristocrats.

I'm amazed Ferdy Habsburg hasn't been mentioned yet.

It was always tempting when he was in F3, to greet his impressive overtakes with "Holy Roman Emperor, Batman!"

We also didnĀ“t mention Prince Carl Philip of Sweden, Duke of Varmland.

He raced a Lotus Evora in beautiful Swedish colours some years ago.

Hey Lee, I raced against a titled Aussie there back in the day. Yes, though Captain Peter Janson's title is of military origin, it was bestowed on him as an honorary title. I am pretty sure he never did military service in the Bhutanese Army! ;)

Yeah I raced against him at the 1980 Australian Rallycross Championship.  He drove a local Torana. His mate Larrikan Larry won the event in the second [local] Kruger Motors VW.

Larry has resurected his Repco Round Australia VW. Look at the Perkins Engineering You Tube Channel. You get restored Supercars [by Jack], Caterpilar Dozers and VWs by Larry!!

Another driver once called me a Count, at least I think that's what he said.
