To be fair to the C4 guys, if he said that to me, I'd find out first whether he had the power to behead people before contradicting him.

As noted above, His Serene Highness made the same claim on C4 in 2017.

Serena Highness, is that the former Tennis professional, now happily (one hopes) married to a Mr. Highness? What does she know about motor sports?

The history of the chequered flag in maritime and naval signalling is extremely complex, BUT in 1780 the British Admiral Rodney's flag captain, a Captain Young, advised that: "Chequered flags should be abolished. Quartered, halved, three-striped, striped corner ways, half up and down, and pierced, are the only ones that are properly distinguished at a distance."

Yet in the 1913 Royal Navy Handbook of Signalling the service's 'Alpha' flags were illustrated, showing a chequered flag representing the final letter of the alphabet - 'Z'.

The chequered squares on that RN signal flag were in white and blue, not white and black, but perhaps the significance of 'Z' signifying finality - an end to the activity - might have been translated into sporting competition...

Certainly an avenue potentially worthy of further research...?

Going through the book "Le Grand Prix de Monaco. L'âge d'or 1950-1965" (Glénat, 2023), which focuses on the photography of Edward Quinn, I have just read (page 33): Antony Noghès, initiateur du Grand Prix de Monaco. Il (...) aurait suggéré l'adoption internationale du drapeau à damier pour signifier l'arrivée des courses.
