Don't know if anyone else has seen this newspaper report but thought it might be of interest:

"LEGENDARY racing driver Sir Stirling Moss was badly hurt after coming off his scooter.

Sir Stirling, 73, broke his hip, injured his left shoulder and damaged muscle tissue when he lost control of his 250 Piaggio in the wet and it then toppled on to him.

Motorists braked hard to avoid him in the road. He rode home to Mayfair after the accident in Waterloo, South London, but then collapsed. He said from hospital yesterday: "I'm a very lucky man. It's annoying because there is no one else to blame but myself.

"I saw a car coming up behind me and moved over. I must have touched the front brake because there was a jolt and I fell off."

He is having intensive therapy on his left side - which was temporarily paralysed in a crash in 1961, ending his career."

Let's hope he makes a speedy recovery.

He's had several accidents on scooters over the years. I think he broke his leg once in another similar accident.

Wasn't Stirling in the news earlier this year with a story about how he would now be riding a scooter around London to avoid the congestion tax?

Get well soon....in time for Goodwood.

Didn't Stirling mend himself astonishingly quickly after his Spa shunt?

Its all too easy to drop a scooter in the wet especially if there is also oil or diesel on the road the small diameter wheels with their tiny contact patch under the right conditions make a much less safe vehicle than a conventional motorcycle with its more generous very soft rubber, doubtless it went from under him with no warning and he fell awkwardly -- I hope the hip break is simple and he makes a full and speedy recovery

True, the risk is quite high. I hope his bones are still young enough and he will get well soon.

Ouch. :( Let's hope Sir Stirling's still fit enough to recover fully and quickly from this one.
If Alf Francis was around I'm sure he'd weld in a new hip joint quickly ;)

She had a fall and fractured her skull. DCN told me this privately some time ago when I contacted him on another matter re Stirling, but as it now seems to be public knowledge (I heard that interview too) ....

She's on the mend, but these things take time.

May I add my get-well wishes to the rest?

Deja vu: over 41 years ago, I sent SM a get-well letter shortly after his 62 Easter Sunday Goodwood accident. His secretary sent me a very nice letter in reply, and I still have it. ( At the time she wrote me, SM was still in a coma,)

I met him when he was recovering at Robert Publicker's (Inver House whiskey) house here in Fort Lauderdale. I believe he was splitting his time between here and the Bahamas. He signed my copy of "A Turn at the Wheel" which I still cherish to this day. I was a mere 14, and totally intimidated to be in the presence of the great one. He was as pleasant as could be and made me feel completely comfortable. I hope for a full and speedy recovery, and to see him at Revival, fit as ever!

Back in 1961, I wrote to Stirling Moss and got his Photograph,
and I met him Zandvoort 1993,
only briefly..
He autographed my books,
two pocket books, with his typical very small autograph..
that was before I got the other ones,
I love to have meet him again,
to autograph the other ones,
I got since then..
Paul

next year, Goodwood??

all the best to OUR Sir Stirling!!!
if he ever wants to,
my wife will cook him and his wife some nice indonesian meal!!

sure!!
that should be..
A great..
moment...
to us!!!

I'd like to add my Get Well Wishes to Sir Stirling, I certainly look forward to seeing him at the revival in September.

Stirling is one of my true heros and this time at Goodwood I would really like to meet him and get an autograph, ( I normally get shoved out the way and can't get close! :| )

SM thanks everybody for their best wishes ... and confesses he is a silly old bugger...

The accident occurred in the underpass near Waterloo Bridge in the centre of London, and the Piaggio 250 landed on him...hard. He has cracked the socket of one hip and has been put on crutches for a minimum six weeks. He also has an open wound in one arm against which the crutch-armpiece rubs which seems to be irritating him most (quite literally).

He is REALLY upset with himself for letting such a thing happen when Lady Moss still needs all the help a fit SM could provide...because she was really rather badly hurt but typically is putting an extremely brave and sunny face on matters.

I told them they're like a cross between 'Last of The Summer Wine' and 'Casualty' and ought to know better.

Stirl wants to do another book - The suggestion "The Stirling Moss Way to Safer Motorcycling" went over like a concrete Zeppelin...

Thanks are due to everybody, again...

Any chance of getting him to post here while he's only semi-mobile, Doug?

I remember a article I read about a "fun race" that Rossi and the other MotoGP riders made on scooters. Rossi said it was very fun, but very difficult since the small wheels did not give much warning before loosing grip completely. So Sir Sterling Moss should not put too much blame on himself.

Get well soon, SM!

Scooters are deadly in poor grip conditions (wet or dirt roads) On a motorcycle you don't have the gyroscopic effect of the large wheels which provides stability at any significant speed. A scooter is inherently unstable as you sit on it rather than astride it. The effect is that you never get the feeling of being at one with the machine that you get with a motorcycle or even a bicycle. I think this is far more significant than the tyre's contact area.

More importantly, best wishes to Sir Stirling for a quick recovery.

Doug, plese try to persuade him to subscribe to TFN

This is bad news indeed, I hope Golden Boy is up and running soon... It seems I may have lost some of my manners nowdays, for not haveing wished speedy recovery to Lady Moss first, but (as a big Moss fan) I hope to be pardoned.

A month or so has passed since Stirling's fall from the Piaggio. I wonder if Mr. Nye might be so good as to provide us with a report on his progress.

Thanks, Doug, in anticipation.

I believe there's some sort of beano going on at Goodwood next week that Doug's a bit busy with at the moment, but I was going to post this anyway ....

Stirling now writes a column for a new classic car mag called Octane and has provided an update: Stirling being Stirling, he's now decided the NHS ought to come up with a better design of stretcher, since taking him to X-ray involved about five transfers.

He missed the British GP and Ennstal Classic and has had Sid Watkins keeping an eye on him - he seems to be optimistic he will make it to Monterey though, at least after he's had "a bit of relaxation" in Florida.

I can tell you all that Stirling is on the mend; we had dinner at Pebble Beach on the Friday with Stirling and Suzie. Stirling was on crutches which was a "bloody nuisance" but the evening was spend with lots of stories and fun, so the old boy will survive!

I wouldn't put money on that Eric! He is Stirling Moss after all ....

Even if he doesn't drive, what price him taking a few trips round the circuit in the passenger seat of something?

One of the greatest disappointments of my life is that I only became interested as a kid in racing in early 1962 just before SM's career-ending shunt. I never saw him race in anger...but I do cherish my autographed copy of All But My Life and likewise the signed Randy Owens print Moss's Mas.

Get well and stay safe to Sir Stirling and Lady Moss.
