Hi!

As I know Jean Ragnotti has tested F1 cars three times, but I can't remember the years. Can you help me? Also I will be very grateful, if you place some photos of these tests.

I remember he tested the Renault at Paul Ricard in 81-82 i Guess...

I remember that after a few laps he was in the same second than Prost and on a TV report, he was asked the question...'Didn't Renault asked you to drive for them in F1 ?'
The answer was... 'You know, I like the little restaurants in the country sides.... And i like to live in France'

Ragnagna is certainly the most pleasant man that has ever been in rally... And on circuits... His quotes are memorable....

If you read french... http://membres.lycos.fr/clubragnotti/ and search anecdotes...
(As you'll read it you'll also find he tested the Williams F1... And beated Hunt)

Just think about that... Rallying in Greece...Finishing Second (i think)... Taking the plane the evening back to paris... Jump in the car... Drive down all night to Montecarlo and jump in his F3 for the last qualifying session...

Jean Ragnotti F1 testing

1983, Renault RE30C, Jyllandsringen (21 August)
1989, Williams FW12B Renault, Paul Ricard (1 March)
1994, Williams FW15 Renault

It needs now to go back to the press of these years to fill the gaps and have lap times...

According to my files Jean Ragnotti (48) tested the Williams FW15C-Renault at Paul Ricard in December 1993. On this session the following drivers also participated:

Kelvin Burt (26)
Kenny Bräck (27)
Jean-Pierre Jarier (47)
Allard Kalff (31)
Derek Daly (40) - His test appeared in various magazines.
Jochen Mass (47)
John Watson (47)

Bernard Dudot, Adrian Newey and Patrick Head were also given the chance to try the FW15C on this occasion.

My records (main source Autosport btw) shows that Jean Ragnotti (44) also tried the FW12C in December 1989.

Others taking part in this December session were the following F1 retirees: James Hunt (42), Patrick Tambay (40) and Jacques Laffite (45).

Great stuff, Rainer

John Watson spoke about this test during a Grand Prix on Eurosport. He and fellow commentator Allard Kalff had been invited to try the Williamses. Watson, as a six times Grand Prix winner was embrassed to have a young bloke called David Coulthard as an instructor

Ragnotti's Renault test run was held at Paul Ricard in the last week of October 1980. According to Renault PR person Marie Claude-Beaumont he "went quickly very soon."

Autosprint didn't mention any Ragnotti test at Paul Ricard on that day, but it wrote about a test by Jackie Stewart, because he should have done a film. He drove the same Williams FW12C Renault (chassis #7) that Patrese was testing.
Stewart drove on March 1st and 3rd but I have no time nor photos.

Ciao
Guido

Jean Ragnotti tested Renault RE40 at Le Castellet/Paul Ricard on December 20th 1983. He did some 10 laps, the best one 1'11"62.
I have just posted best times of each driver present on Ultimate test driver thread! - post 270.

Ciao,
Guido

He's a really friendly guy and you can see him at all classic car shows where Renault's historic department is present.
Many people are shy, just ask for an autograph and don't reallly chat with him or don't know who he is but he's always up for a chat and he has really funny stories.
