Need for speed....
I know it's not realy a racing 'simulator' but I'd like to know your opinions on this game...
I've just started playing hot pursuit 2, and I kinda like it.... kinda....
and I've always had problems getting NFS:porsche to work on my system, so I ask for opinions on this lengthy series of 'racers'

Hi

I like them. Of course, the physics are on par with that of Whacky Wheels (anyone remember? :) ) but they are fun to play with. Just for the looks of the 3D models, for example: Aston, Lotus, Ferrari, Lambo, etc... all in only one package, it is real fun. The tracks are well designed too, very balanced. I prefered Porsche Challenge, because it was better on almost everything (apart from the graphic evolution), and its progression system was very appealing. I only wish they made it with Lotus instead of Porsche, but that is a matter of taste! HP2 lost a lot of the feeling of previous NFS games. Like night/day shifting, for once...

I first bought NFS HP2 on Gamecube last year, and I decided to buy the PC version last week end in order to race online. Just too bad the GC one is nicer to look at than the PC one! I just have a P3 600 and it is hard on graphics!

Regards

And a damn shame that is.
I had a lot of fun with Porsche Unleashed.. Mostly because of the physic began resembling (just a little) a real car with the axis of rotation in the turns now being at one of four tyres instead of the car's dead-center.. :D

Try renaming a file called "gimme.dll" or something like that to "gimme.bak".

It is supposed to allow the game to run with XP.

will give it a shot tomorrow... will keep an update....
don't know if it's working currently, or not... sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't... depends on the phase of the moon when installed.

The physics engine in Porsche Unleashed is underrated. It is pretty good and much better than in other NFS games, before or after.

I remember I have done that, but didn't work.
Somehow I feel game does even try to work with regular Win XP but not at all with XP Pro.

From the usenet:

------------
NFS PU has a memory leak when running under any flavor of Windows NT
(Win2000 or WinXP). It hangs on the "Loading" screen and slowly consumes all
your free memory until it crashes.

There are three things you could do.

1.
Make sure you have the latest compatibility patches from the MS Update site.
There is a newly released patch that lists NFS PU as one of the games it
contains fixes for. It's not 100% clear if this patch fixes the memory leak
bug with NFS PU. It has been reported that it will work with NFS PU
unpatched (V3.0 or 3.2) or patched to V3.5 with the official patch, but not
with the noCD patch. You might have to move on to fix. No 2, at least if you
want to use a noCD patch.

2.
Reduce the size of your page file.
Set it to min=200 and max=200. If it works, you could raise the settings, if
it doesn't, set them even lower. They can be set lower than the size of your
physical memory. You can even disable the page file, but if you do, other
apps might run you system low on memory.

3.
Delete gimme.dll
You will find it in the NFS program directory. Now it may seem strange that
you can fix anything by deleting some programs files, but this is actually
true. If you have NFS PU Ver. 3.5, it looks like the only problem is that
you will no longer se the persona picture in the first menu. If you have not
patched NFS PU to Ver. 3.5, deleting gimme.dll will disable Peer to Peer IP
Multiplayer.

I'm under the impression that fix No.2 will always work, and fix No.3 will
sometimes work. You should never have to do both.

Also; Open fe.txt and make sure that castanet is set to "0" (castanet=0) in
two places if you use the noCD patch.

still haven't tried it, but cheers! :D

make sure that castanet is set to "0" (castanet=0)

hmmmm... deleting gimmes, setting castanets to 0, next thing you know, you'll have to remove the mariachi band

NFS HP2, yuck, I really dislike the play. The steering whether with a wheel or the keyboard feels like it is mounted on a big spring, inputs all have a huge delay. I guess it is what driving would be like on drugs or really drunk. It looks cool though.

NFS Porsche Unleashed is pretty cool. Decent physics, but it is somewhere in between sim and arcade. More realistic than your average arcade, but not as realistic as your average sim. It should play fine on XP Pro. I have installed it on a couple of different XP systems. Not sure what you might need to do to get it to work, but it will (should) work. My only complaints are that it doesn't include the old racers, 908, 904, 917, etc... and the tracks are limited. And unfortunately you can't really mod the thing, basically just new textures for the same old tracks/cars.

I have NFS HP2 for the X-Box.
The championship mode is fun but the pursuit side is a pain. It's very easy to get paranoid - every cop comes after me and lets the other speedsters alone.
Also, sometimes the graphics seem a liitle 'odd' - it reminds me of those ancient arcade games where a model car was attached by a rod to a steering wheel and the 'road' scrolled past. I noticed this effect on downhill sweeping turns, the car just doesn't follow 'normal' behaviour at all.

I will not agree with you I found that NFS 4 HP1 is better aswell as NFS 5 PU is better in that you see a car dash and it is more realistic feel about the game.

NFS 6 HP2 has a more of PS/PS2 feel to the game and that is a no no ...

I am running XP pro at home and NFS 5 PU works great on my PC. and that is without any of the above mods. :smoking:

Quite right. I really enjoy taking a 365 out for a thrash every now and then - just to get a feel for the "hammer handle first" effect. Drive those cars hard, and you get a whole new respect for the term 'oversteer' ..... :rotfl:
