There are several books about F1 which include chassis numbers. Do you know something similar about Indy Car/Champ Car-Racing? Sheldon perhaps?
Did anybody ever record them?

Thanks for your help!

Herbert,

I wonder if the Autocourse CART yearbooks contain this information? I haven't seen one, but surely someone here must have one or more of their editions....

At least the 1983-1995 Indy 500 Year Books (Hungness) included chassis numbers for the participating cars.

Herbert, I don't know of a book, some, later Hungness Indy 500 yearbooks had chassis numbers with the qualifying photos. On Track magazine used to have chassis numbers in the CART race reports. Bob Laycock had his card file. IMS has records. But many of the cars (usually american-built ) never had chassis numbers or ID plates.

Are you looking for info on a specific chassis ?

I have every single edition from 1993 to the present. None of them contain this information.

And Grand Prix International's report on the 1984 (IIRC) Long Beach race had chassis numbers.

Before 1983, I know of no published sources. Which is a pity, as pre-83 is the period I'm interested in.

Some of us have been trying to piece together as much of this as we can over the past several years. T'aint easy, MacGee. As stated, there is some information floating around out there, but it is often a headache to find. We have discussed this elsewhere, but it seems that much of the material that belongs in the archives somewhere for researchers -- the Bob Laycock card file, the AAA and USAC tech spec sheets and plates, and so forth seem to be missing, incomplete, or on "close hold."

Again, several here have done heroic work in attempting to sort out the data and track individual chassis. The Kurtis Kraft Indy record and the Watson roadsters are among the few we really have a true clue about. After that it becomes Seriously Hard. But, there is always a bit of progress that happens to encourage you to do more work....

Not all hungess books have the chassis numbers, regrettably.
The best source is indeed the old Bob Laycock card system which, I believe is now maintained by Donald Davidson. Unless the IMS press room kept that goldmine for themselves after all. Laycock's grandson also works for them so....

But I assume that you are interested in other races than Indy only as well? The Autocourses occasionally slip in a number within the sneppets section of the race itself.

I`m looking especially for the Chassis-numbers of the 1960s and 70s. It's really strange that it is so difficult to obtain this information for the Americans are very statistic-minded. They have stats about everything!
A lot of help would be to have some kind of chassis-desigation. Phil Harms great race results do not include them in most of the cases. For instance in all results of the 70s there is no special chassis-type mentioned. It is always written for example "Eagle-Offy" or "Eagle-Chevy" etc.
Sometimes but very seldom a year is included, like "Eagle 74-Offy". But it is all very vague.

It`s a shame that the AUTOcourse Yearbooks (I have all of them, too) do not include Chassis-numbers. They are included in their F1-counterpart. Why couldn`t they also add them to CART-yearbooks?
Also the "Man and Machines of Indycar-Racing"-series from 1987 to 1993 does not include chassis-numbers.

Herbert,

Search through the old TNF threads and you will read a sad, sad tale when it comes to the information you are seeking. More than a few of us could rattle on for hours about this subject. The lack of information as to the specificity of the individual chassis and their stories/histories in AAA, USAC, CART, and the IRL is in stark contrast to what one might expect from the reams of data otherwise devoted to this form of racing.

I have had to place a hold on some of my work simply because of a lack of time lately, not a lack of interest. Gerr, "Fines," Jim, Henri, Phil, and others are a wealth of knowledge and are doing what can be done under the circumstances.

Needless to say, it is easy for one's frustrations to bubble up very quickly on this topic....

Mid-70s were all Eagles weren't they? We need AAR's production records. And where are the McLaren records? All the M16s and M24s were built in-house by McLaren rather than by Trojan, weren't they? Doug??

This is making me think that I really need to finally bite the bullet and create the Access database I have been meaning to devise to help track all those chassis I have notes on. I did sketch it out some time ago, but just never worked in the data. Maybe I can add a bit to this discussion in the not too distant future. (Plus, I'll do the same for the NASCAR material while I am at it in another database.)

I will make it a point to see about the 1960's/1970's and see what I can sort out from the patterns that might emerge doing it this way.

years ago I did sort out the careers at Indy of the different M16's in existance, problem is that I don't know the original chassis numbers given to the cars. Also some confusion about the Penske owned cars.
If there is interest for it, I can try to compile that list and post it somewhere, or mail it to Don and see what hee can do with it?
But honestly, I think more serious McLaren fans may have done similar work already and more complete then my records are too.

Can you give me an advice what to do Don?

I think that list would be very useful - could you post it here on on a new thread? Maybe we can then get someone with good relations with McLaren to see if they can access the original production records. It may also be possible to work backwards from the chassis plates on the cars today. Two or three of these cars are in fairly well known collections.

For starters, not all Indy car builders assigned serial numbers to their chassis, not even sure that Offenhauser ever assigned numbers to engines (not that this would have meant much past a race or two, as crankcases and cylinder blocks got changed out frequently). This, I think, would have been true certainly of those who built perhaps one car ever year or so, not even sure that AJ Watson ever assigned any chassis numbers to his cars.

Frank Kurtis, the first of the series-builders of oval track race cars after WW-II did assign chassis numbers, even stamping them into specially made nameplates. Dan Gurney's All American Racers did as well.

With all due respect Don, I truly don't feel I belong on that list of esteemed names on this subject...as I am almost as completely in the dark as anyone else! (just ask fines about being able to answer queries along those lines :D )

Not that I'm averse to this sort of topic and project, I certainly consider it a worthy (if daunting) task, and as always, would be willing to help even though I actually consider my area of interest and expertise more the drivers and tracks (and even more obscurely, Western U.S. short track racing). This comes not from lack of knowing how or where to check, nor lack of interest, but from lack of access and the same lack of time you have.

That being said, I would have much more to contribute as far as NASCAR chassis passed on down through NASCAR's Western series (I can see fines now , rolling his eyes and muttering about the bloody taxi cabs  ) This is simply due to familiarity, material at hand and even some good contacts.

And I also mentioned in the Before We Lose Track thread, where one might be able to similarly track down former NASCAR Cup chassis that found their way to ARCA and the relatively short lived Sportsman division...though it will not be easy to track down now!

But thanks again for the mention and kind words, though on this particular subject (Champ/Indy chassis), I don't feel it's deserved.

Apparently the last installments of the John Glenn Printz "A History of National Championship Racing" -- parts two and three of the 1966 season -- that I have been to find were in the April and May 1985 issues of Indy Car Racing magazine. I either overlooked the first part or it wasn't available it seems at the IMRRC.

In addition, thanks to the IMRRC, I have whatever chassis numbers that were known for events held during the 1984 season.

The effort continues.....

We have Phil Harms, now is there any chance of our getting Mr. Printz and his colleagues Ken McMacken and Jim O'Keefe onto The Nostalgia Forum? Is anyone in contact with any of those gentlemen?

I have been in contact with Jim O'Keefe, about three or four letters to and fro, but that was at least ten, maybe fifteen years ago! Somewhere I should still have his address, must try to find it - but I'm in no position to know if it's still valid :(

My story is about the same as Michael's, several separate exchanges with Jim O'Keefe and John Printz, but all ages ago, 10-15 years at least. I recall Paul Sheldon and I mentioning this very topic in letters from some years ago as well, Paul encouraging me to please dig into this topic......

This is the disgrace of American oval racing, that no one has assembled this record even for the top level of US racing. It's even more upsetting, because those who have access to records that might help don't seem to give a damn. Does anyone on this forum feel close enough to Donald Davidson to approach him about how those who are interested might proceed.

It seems that many of us travelled the same roads, ignorant of oneanother's presence, in the pre-internet days. Now, thanks to TNF and the Yahoo groups (American and Canadian), we are able to collaborate, rather than duplicate each other's efforts. I wonder how many letters/phone calls Printz, O'Keefe, McMaken and Freeman (whom I forgot to mention in my last post) received from people interested in the history of American championship racing.
I spoke to John Printz about ten years ago. At the time, he was working at Wayne State University in Detroit. He may still be there. Around the same time, I corresponded with Joe Freeman. I don't have his address anymore, but he shouldn't be too hard to find as he is now the vice-president of the Society of Automotive Historians. I found both men to be patient, helpful and, of course, extremely knowledgeable.
I searched the past posts on Yahoo's American Racing History Group. A couple of years ago, there was a discussion about their work. At the time, Phil Harms* was in contact with Joe Freeman. According to Phil, the best way to contact Jim O'Keefe was through Mr. Freeman. O'Keefe and Freeman have long been at work on a book on American Auto Racing winners. I wondered then, and wonder now, what its status is. Like Freeman and O'Keefe, Pritz and McMaken were close collaborators. Although Mr. Printz was mentioned in a number of posts from 2001 and 2002, there was no mention of his having passed away.
I do not know Donald Davidson, but I do not think that one has to be close to him in order to ask for assistance. About ten years ago, I spoke to him on the phone and exchanged correspondence with him. I found him to be extremely open, helpful and, of course, knowledgeable. I have no doubt that he could be of help with regard to chassis numbers and identifications from the years he's been around the Speedway (1965+, I believe). I don't know what he would have. I doubt that the Speedway kept track of such things. As far as the AAA's racing records are concerned, I believe that all of the records that have survived have found their way onto Gordon White's microfilms.

Mike

P.S. Where is Phil? He hasn't posted on TNF since August. I thought he would be all over this thread.

Michael,

I think there are many who couldn't agree more with you. Phil Harms has been very generous with the material he has, as well as his time, for which I am personally most grateful. Another Big Ditto to Gordon White for supplying -- to me and others on microfilm, whatever materials that escaped the Big Purge at the Contest Board's office in 1955.

I am not sure that I can say too much right now, but Bill Green (the historian of the IMRRC) and I are working on an approach to this issue as we speak. We are going to try an approach that we hope might lead to greater access of the sorts of materials that scholars like us need to tell the story that isn't being told.

That there exists a real sense of ownership of whatever material there is -- the "proprietary" view of history and its archives -- is a fact of life that we must somehow deal with in a fashion that allows not only the story to be told, but for scholars to flesh it out. For reasons to do with certain "artifacts" being viewed as investments, control over various bits and pieces of information is paramount to having a measure of influence over a piece of the market. This is not simply a case of a professional journalist being reluctant to share materials he wants to market in book form, but somehow seems to be lots more complicated.

As a result of Michael's blistering statement, perhaps I should shift my primary focus on this topic and hope for the support of those on the TNF to see what can be done to actually "produce" something.

Mike,

Our posts crossed in the ether, but a another great post on how we all seemed to be working this on parallel paths, but now have the ability to begin to better use the collaborative tools offered by the internet and TNF. I don't think Donald Davidson is the problem. He gets a bad rap -- mea culpa -- that is almost always born out of frustation that has nothing to do with Davidson, but he is the most convenient target and so, splat!

Thanks for mentioning Joe Freeman. He slipped my mind as well. I think that Printz, O'Keefe, McMaken, and Freeman are all still out there working away. Add Phil Harms and the others here at TNF as well as the other Virtual Scholars and perhaps there are enough to either get something done or spoil the broth -- take your pick. What is at the bottom of all this is the laboreous, boring digging through the layers of Stuff to find those tiny nuggets....and the chronicles to put the story in its context.

However, we still don't have The Story although Dick Wallen is still plugging away at helping providing materials for the bookshelf to aid both in the effort and fire imaginations of those who wouldthen join the fray.....

For those interested, it appears that the Huffaker space frame cars for 1964 & 1965 were Genie Mk. 9's and the monocoque cars for 1966 were Genie Mk. 12's.

I finally ordered the latest Dick Wallen book, the one of the 1970's, and looking forward to it showing up in the next week or so.

In between other things last night, I worked some on 1984, outlining the eace reports and adding the chassis numbers and so forth to the material.

Should anyone be interested, I have the Phil Harms data, my relevant RVM articles, some of the NASCAR Speedway material, some of the Formula SCCA/ Formula A/5000 material, and other similar material in an MS Word document that is well in the territory of over three thousand pages and climbing -- without much of the other material which I hope to add. Ask and you shall receive a copy. Please keep in mind that this is material that Phil Harms labored to assemble and credit should be given where credit is due -- Phil Harms.

Perhaps we might want to consider this as the baseline for consolidating our collaborative efforts.

And yes, where's Phil Harms when you need him? :D

Don, is the 70s Wallen book out already? It's a must-have, no doubt...

Btw, I, too, am working off the Harms records - what better way to start? At the mo my files are in a somewhat messy state, but I promised to forward them to anyone interested as soon as they contain some meaningful input from my side - and I'm sticking to it!

I am still plugging away at this..... Being on the road so much does not help.

Plus, I am also working at plugging the holes in my Floyd Clymer collection. I hope to have a complete set of the Clymer annuals to complement my Hungness set and the Autocourse CART annuals. Down to just a few now that should be rolling in any time now, plus 1954 which turned out to be "unavailable" so looking at another source for that one.

Don and Indy Chassis Number Watchers,

I did not mean for my comments to be construed as any kind of criticism of Donald Davidson, although this is not a subject that seems to get his heart beating faster. My point is that IMS has always maintained that it is THE CAR and not THE DRIVER that qualifies. In order to enforce that point of view, it would seem that someone within the IMS organization, or perhaps USAC, would have the records of which car had which chassis number. I know that, just as with Euro chassis numbers, there was some fudging, with so much on the line. Nonetheless, until someone tells me something different, I think there must be some information, perhaps in the bowels of IMS, that could help in this venture. More than one historian has told me that they have been shown stuff that they didn't know existed, but only for a moment. I can't say that this "teaser" material had to do with serial numbers, but it is possible with the Speedway's inability to distinguish between journalists, whom they seem to despise, and serious historians, whom they don't acknowledge. It's no coincindence that the Indy Yearbook was written for years by a PR person, not an historian. This gets back to Don's "proprietary" history. Another problem is that many Indy car builders have built up fresh cars that have been sold as something they weren't -- try Indy Winner, to start. No one wants to give out any info because no one wants the value of their vintage Indy car to be affected. What they fail to understand is that because this situation exists, no vintage Indy car is worth very much money compared to Grand Prix or sports cars, because the provenance of the latter two can usually be established. Lesser provenances are suitably discounted. With Indy cars, to reiterate, ALL are discounted, the real and the made-up, because there is no way to establish a car's provenance, except for the few with a very short chain of ownership.

Here are examples of what I am talking about -- and just how frustrating this can be.....

Posted Image

Posted Image

Note: With the Smokey Yunick info I get the ONLY block number for an Indy Ford I have been able to find, but no chassis number; with the Coyote information, no block number for the Foyt/Ford, but a chassis number!

As is obvious, there is no SINGLE magic bullet for this problem, but the usual scut work of laboriously assembling a body of knowledge similar to one of those 100,000 piece jigsaw puzzles and slowly making sense out of it as best as one can -- with the realization that there are pieces missing.....

Pity the Poor Historian.

Also: I think 'Cabianca' lays out some interesting points that certainly make this much more of a "challenge" than it possibly could or should be. The notion of "proprietary" history is one that seems to have been eagerly adopted by certain parties in the motor trade..... Ditto his remarks on Donald Davidson. From all that I have gathered over the years, Davidson is a genuine and generous soul in ways that seems to get overlooked by too many.

Perhaps part of the problem is the legacy of the "Special" in American open wheel racing. From what I've read there have been a lot of people who purchased a chassis (either new or used), made a few modifications to it and called it a "Joe Blow Special" (or some other gratuitous name). Of course whenever that person then entered the car they refered to it not by its original chassis makers name but by the name they gave it. Then it gets entered that way in the historical record and it's true origin begins to quickly fade from memory.

Kind of like someone buying a Lola F1 chassis, dropping in a new engine, making some modifications to it and calling it a Honda. Oh wait - that really happened!

Oh well, you know what I mean.

If you will allow me to continue my rant, here is my experience today. I am researching some Indy car results, so I natuarally went to Phil Harms wonderful resource on http://www.motorsport.com

The problem in quesion spilled over from CART to the IRL. I was quite amazed that the IRL results on that site simply give the "Car Name" which makes no mention of chassis or engine -- the old Chug-a-Mug Beer Special problem.

Phil usually includes the source of his results and gave them as http://www.indy500.com

I went there and found that IRL results are posted at http://indyracing.com
There, when the cars are mentioned at all, the cars are identified thusly:

"C/E/T" which I doped out to mean Chassis/Engine/Tire

So you have each of these elements identified by a single letter, i.e., D/T/F, for example. If you have some idea of what's going on in the IRL, you can probably figure out that it was a Dallara-Toyota with Firestone tires, but you have no idea of which model Dallara and which iteration of the engine. This doesn't seem to be laying a great foundation for the future. IMHO, it is simply preserving the long trail of ignorance that pervades this type of racing.

Please understand that this is not to reflect on Phil Harms whose contributions to the stats of Indy racing are far beyond the call of duty. My criticism is for those who provide the material that Phil, and those of us who would like to preserve the historic record, are forced to work with. Perhaps, instead of worrying about the past, we should be trying to flesh out what's happening today, since the sanctioning organizations seem to have no interest.

Michael T,

Hear! Hear! Bingo, right on the nose! My experience with the IRL material has been very frustrating in many areas, although CART and USAC are not far behind in some areas. As for the AAA.... : ....even with the material Gordon White, et. al., saved and put on microfilm, many, many gaps and bridges that suddenly end in the middle of nowhere.

I can only echo your comment concerning Phil's devotion to duty, above and far beyond what is called for.

By the way, I found my notes for 1984 and I have pretty much most of the chassis numbers for the 1984 season -- along with the engine prep information. I am going to have to admit defeat for some of the other years for right now....

I'm glad you've brought this thread back to life.

We've uncovered information on the 1972 Eagles on another thread and there was also been all that work done on the M16-series McLarens. The Coyote information is starting to emerge too.

We just have to keep plugging away at this - and find a way to get at USAC's info too.

In Rolla Vollstedt's Autobiography you can find some information about the cars he built. There is a summary of the history each of his Indy Car-chassis'.

Aren't there book about Kurtis Cars which include chassis-numbers?

Of the several Kurtis titles out there, the only one I own is Gordon White's "Indianapolis Racing Cars of Frank Kurtis," which does indeed have those numbers.
