Yes. Jones was under contract to Teddy Yip and the rather ambitiious plans involved F1 with the second Ensign and also USAC. He only signed for Shadow because Yip was willing to release him from this contract (but not until he'd done the F5000 race at Calder, which meant he missed the Race of Champions).

The boy could drive, remember seeing at Sandown in Hamilton's 935.

Yeah, saw him at Calder in it and nothing about it seemed to concern him at all, back it in until he had boost and almost like a Sprintcar - sideways with the fronts trying to lift off the ground (and leaving 2 black lengths of rubber.

Must be on Boobtube somewhere.

I often thought it was a shame thast apart from the Toyota sports car deal, that he was never picked up by Porsche for there sports car program, once his F1 years had pasted by.

I think he had severe conflicts...

He wanted to be 'at home' in Australia. Such things would have interfered, but the conflicts came when money was waved about with the Beatrice deal.

Apart from the money that was a waste of 2 years, during that time he could have been a gun in Group C sports cars.

Okay, who are the experts?

While Alan was racing for Carl Haas in F5000 he was jetting back and forth across the Atlantic. Living in England and racing in America. Any idea what years?

And, more especially, which issue of Racing Car News carried his column about his racing at this time?

I hope we can get answers to these things...

IIRC Alan drove for Carl Haas in the 1978 Can-Am (with one race in 1979 subbing for Ickx), not in F5000.

It would be great if Alan himself would contribute to this thread :-)

Yes, I finally found what I was looking for...

And it was all at the end of the '78 season. Or at least what I've found so far. I'm actually looking for where he wrote his reasons for flying in the Concorde all the time.

And for Alan Jones is trying hard to be polite and not too outspoken. I am sure that will pass sooner than later. He always was very blunt and honest!

While Alan is looking well, his F1 comments are very general.
Hopefully he can become more involved as the season goes on, but I feel he is talking from a different era, an era which is long gone.

It was great seeing Alan on the GP coverage. He sometimes reminds me a bit of James Hunt with his comments, but then, he has a zillion times more experience of Grand Prix racing than the other Muppets on Channel Tens coverage this weekend.. one of whom, is a Vet... ( although apparently he has been to Ferrari World... )
