"Watkin" is an English family name meaning "Son of Wat". Watkins is a fairly common family name in Wales. "Glen" is derived from the Gaelic "gleann" meaning a steep sided valley.

Dr. Samuel Watkins came from New York City in 1828 and, in time, created a village. A charter was issued in 1842. When Dr. Watkins changed the name to Jefferson, village officials drew up a new charter in 1852. After Dr. Watkins died, his widow suggested the village name be changed to Watkins in recognition of his many beneficences to the area. This was done and yet another charter drawn up in 1861. Because of the presence of Watkins Glen State Park, visitors and other non-residents caused some confusion by persisting in calling the village Watkins Glen. In 1926, the U.S. Postal Service agreed to allow the village to be named Watkins Glen

Watkins is also a common name in the Co. Wicklow and Co. Wexford areas of Ireland. The Watkins family from this area were normally of protestant extraction (Anglican - Church of Ireland) and I'm sure some would have emigrated to the USA in the 19th century. How do I know - my great grandmother was a Watkins from Co. Wexford.

"Glen" comes from an old Gaelic word meaning small, narrow and secluded valley. Watkins Glen began to form 12,000 years ago at the end of the most recent episode of the Ice Age. Great continental glaciers from Canada had excavated an immense trough in an ancient river valley, leaving behind 35 mile long Seneca Lake, the deepest of the Finger Lakes. Glen Creek has poured down the glacially steepened valley side ever since, slowly eroding this gorge through the weak sedimentary rocks, a process which continues at this very moment. The elevation rise from the Main Entrance to the North Entrance is 520'. There are shuttle busses that can bring you back from the top, or take you there to begin your hike for a nominal fee ($2). Dogs are not allowed.

Many thank's to the man who will never ever forget his race in 1980 at the Glen, for that information...

If I'm not mistaken, Mosport Park is a contraction of Motor Sport Park.
