What is the difference between the Itala tipo 50 and the tipo 51?
Both cars were produced in the early twenties, 4 cylinder 83/130 mm, wheelbase 318 cm.
In addition there was a tipo 51 Sport and a short-wheelbase racing version.

Could find a report about the tipo 50 B, “a sporting variant introduced at the end of 1919 for the 1920 season” :

and a tipo 51 Sport with bodywork by Giovanni Bertone :

Robert, I will admit being stumped as to any real differences between the two since I always assumed -- a dangerous proposition -- that the 51 was just a sporty 50....

Don I think you are right.
The tipo 50 was designed by Alberto Orasi. Serge Pozzoli gave it 30 hp and wrote in the Fanauto that 51 was the sports version of the 50.
If we refer to "Marche Italiane Scomparse" (Edizioni del Centro di Documentazione del Museo dell'Automobile.Redazione G.Amari e M.Barberis) we have:
-Tipo 50-25/35HP
Anno di costruzione 1919-1926
Cilindri 4 verticali monobloco 83x130 2813 cc.
Potenza: ..
Numero giri/m 2400
Disposizione valvole: mono laterali
Comando valvole: asse a cammme nel basamento
Accensione magnete A.T.
Cambio 4+RM
Trasmissione cardanica
Passo: 3185
Carreggiata ant: 1410
Carreggiata post: 1410
Pesoautotelaio kg: 1050
Velocita max 80 km/h
Prezz listino Lit: 38000 nel 1922
For the 51 Sport 35/45 HP we have the same technicals except
Year of production 1920-1926
Potenza: unknown but if Pozzoli gave30 hp to the 50 25/35 we can think the 51 S35/45 was at something like 40 hp.
Rpm unknown
Passo 3105
Carreggiata idem tipo 50
Peso unknown
Speed 100 km/h
Note a 51 S driven by Giulio Foresti-Villa finished first of its category (3 liters) in the 1921 Targa Florio and 6 th in general classification. Moriondo 7 th Landi 9 th and Ninive 15 th completed the demonstration.

Jean-Maurice, many thanks, merci mille fois!
Summary: The main differences between the tipo 50 25/35 HP and the 51 Sport 35/45 HP were a counterbalanced crankshaft, a sharper valve timing, and a wheelbase shortened by 8 cm.
