We received message from Richard's publicist that he will not compete in the 2004 WRC having been diagnosed with cancer.

I wish him a very speedy recovery.

Richard Burns has been undergoing tests in hospital to determine the cause of the health problem he suffered before Rally of Wales. These tests have been concluded and the doctors have now confirmed that he has an Astrocytoma. Richard will undergo a course of radiotherapy treatment which the doctors are confident will prove successful. However, they have confirmed that he will be unable to compete in the 2004 FIA World Rally Championship.

Richard says " I would really like to thank everyone for their continued support - it means a lot to me. My fans, the Peugeot WRC team and also everyone at Prodrive and Subaru have all been tremendous. The doctors have advised that I am unable to get back in a rally car for the 2004 FIA WRC Championship and I have to accept that. I'm obviously extremely disappointed but I am feeling very positive and I am determined to focus all of my efforts on getting back to full fitness as soon as I can."

Richard has asked that people respect his and his family's privacy in what has been, and will continue to be, a difficult period. Additional information will be given once Richard has completed the course of treatment referred to above.

That is sad. I hope he can make a recovery and be able to compete again.

Thank goodness, he did not have a more serious incident during a rally.

Oh!
Even though he is not one of my favourite drivers, I feel very bad about this. Hope he will make it back and compete again, because this is not the right way to retire!

Get well Richard!

Terrible news. I hope the docs have found it early enough to save him, brain cancers are often fatal as there is no room in the skull to accomodate them. They are also often secondary tumours with cancer present elsewhere in the body (I didn't come across this info in a nice way I can tell you). He's fit and healthy and I'm having a good thought for him: get well soon mate.

The news we all most feared when we heard he passed out at the wheel of his road car on the Motorway . I'm sure we all hope for the very best probable prognosis and total permanent recovery A nice man and top class driver.

I am sorry to hear Richard's news. But, I am fairly optimistic for his recovery.

If you want information on Astrocytoma you can try these two (UK) links: http://www.cancerbac...astrocytoma.htm and http://www.cancerbac...explanation.htm

Best wishes, Richard. I had looked forward to seeing how he and Solberg got on next year. With the new rules for team size, this pairing could have produced a WCC as well as the WDC(WRC?).

****.... why do we have to endure those things? Quite sure the amount spent in a Iraque war or something stupid would free us from these diseases....

Hope he recover and can be back strong as he is one of the best around and see him driving is always an exhilarating experience.

Godsped Richard ! Our prayers and thoughts with you :|

Very sad and shocking news. The good news is that the Doctors seem confident of a full recovery from initial reports. Lets all pray that this is true.

God be with you and your Family Richard. We wish you a speedy and full recovery.

My father had a brain tumour 30 years ago, it was successfully treated and he is still very much with us today. Lets's hope it works out the same way for Burns.

Wolbo thanks for that small ray of optimism. Here's hoping for a best possible prognosis for the brave Mr. Burns.

The strange lack of info(at least in the U.S.) on Richard's condition especially considering its significance in a major racing championship had me very worried. Looks like I had a pretty good reason to worry. I will miss him next year and am already looking forward to his return in 2005.
