F3 in the '1990s - exotic series
#1
Posted 20 November 2003 - 07:18
And now, the very subject of this thread.
There were a number of domestic F3 championships from the '1990s, of which very few is known outside the countries where they were run.
- GREECE
I only have the list of each year's eventual champion from 1991 to 1999, but no race winner nor any year schedule. I do not know if this series still exist. The Web is of no help — I cannot read in greek language & alphabet.
I wonder if we get a Greek TNFer ? Or if Autosprint gave a piece of information ?
- MEXICO
I miss all the race winners for years 1991 & 1992.
Was there a series in 1990 and before ?
- MADRAS
This small series used to take place on 2 successive week-ends during February on the Irungattu Kottai circuit.
I have the winners for 1992, 1993, 1994 (only for the 2nd week-end, but with a blank for which car Steve Robertson drove this day), 1995, 1996 & 1997.
Who can fill the 1994 gaps ?
Was there races in 1991 & before ?
Was there a national F3 series in India, or was this Madras international only an yearly one-off ?
(Can't find an Indian web site able to answer)
- FIA CENTRAL EUROPE ZONE
This official FIA championship is run over races in Austria, Czechia, Hungary, Poland & Croatia (perhaps too in Slovenia & Slovakia ?) — but neither Autosport in Britain nor Auto-Hebdo in France ever report from it !
I have all the race winners 1998 to 2001 (there was then a Czech web site providing these results, but he seems to have closed down since), but just only the eventual champions for years 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997 & 2002. And nothing at all for 2003 !
- Along or beside this FIA series, I also look for race winners of the Czech F3 domestic series for 1994 to 1998, & for 2002.
Who was the winner of the Brno race, 15 October 2000 ?
What rounds in 2003 after Most, 9-10 August ? Who is the 2003 eventual champion ? What engine powers the Reynard of Thomas Jung ?
Can't find a Czech web site to replace the one yet mentioned.
- The same for the Polish domestic series : I just have only the eventual champion for years 2000 & 2001, plus all the 2002 race winners, and the 2003 race winners for the 3 first rounds, all at Poznan.
What else ? (it seems this series began in 1999)
A liable web site ?
- RUSSIA
I have all the race winners 1999-2002, but just know the eventual champions 1997-1998-1999, and have nothing at all for 1996.
I get the same problem with Russian Web sites as with Greek ones... But as there was a strong Italian contribution in the Russian series, perhaps information was filled into Autosprint ?
- TURKEY
I found a handful of local web sites where I could guess the rounds & winners of 2002-2003 championships.
But I cannot tell if the Turkish regulations are the same as International ones, nor which car / engine combinations powered every winner. Any TNFer from there ?
Ouh la la ! Such large a collection of queries !

Autosport magazine (23rd November 1995) reported: Niko Nikolouzos is the new Greek Formula 3 Champion after winning the final round in Rhodes for the PreMa Power Team. Andreas Halkiopoulos was second on the day, but ranked third overall behind Nikolaos Stremmenos.
Autosport magazine (4th July 1996) reported: George Magliveras won from pole when the Greek Formula 3 Championship visited Rhodes. He brough his Ralt-Alfa RT35 home ahead of Andreas Halkiopoulos’s Mugen-engined Ralt RT36.

I look for some info on Autosprint but I couldn't find anything. Of course this doesn't mean this info is wrongOriginally posted by Carl R.S.

The site also mentions a Greek Formula 3 race held at Bari, Italy on 9th September 1995.

But I think this racewas held on Autodromo del Levante, at Binetto, the only circuit in Puglia (Bari's region). I don't think to a street track as after Geki Russo's accident at Caserta, 1967, the only Italian street track is Cagliari, used since 2002.
In my indexed Autosprint (unfortunately very few issues!) I found info about Sud-Am, Brazilian and Swedish championship 1991:

Jamie Spence drove for Bowman in the 1993 British Formula 3 Championship, and then drove the new Bowman BC4 in the final round the the '93 Japanese F3 series and the International race at Fuji. The team then went to Madras in early 1994.
Motoring News' report on the event made much of the rivalry between the two drivers from Essex, Jamie Spence and Steve Robertson.
Russell Spence at this time was racing in the States, having competed in Toyota Atlantic in 1993. He drove in an IMSA race at Laguna Seca in 1994.

I remember one race my brothers and I raved a lot, because he was supposed to start from the pole position, then he started from the boxes (can't remember why, a puncture, most probably), and then he passed EVERY SINGLE CAR to finish in 1st !!!
Man
Leonel Friedrich was an awesome driver, and I also remeber him being very very tall

There are many years I am intrigued by the European central Zone FIA championship — why never a report in our "occidental" press ? Why no liable web site on it ? And what is this formula 2000 (I also know there was a championship for it in Hungary) that is won by formula 3 cars ? Why is it so difficult to learn from public sources who is the 2003 champion and on which rounds ?
Well, hoping new race results & information... (they all will be included in my F3 file, to be released next week, with all the relevant acknowledgments)

IIRC Italian F.2000 was a championship run with old F.3 cars. It was not a F.3-Class B championship, as races and calendar were completely different. Of course F.2000 was much cheaper, not only because it used old cars, but also because it had cheaper rules.Originally posted by Jimmy Piget

Are you sure, Sergei, that there was a F3 Lotus Opel in 1996 ?
I suppose it was one of the "formula Opel" cars, actually built by Van Diemen, but far from being a F3 even with a 2000 cc engine.
I suppose too that the "Audi" engine was a Volkswagen ?

You right. Canopus team started in 1997 with Formula Opel cars but in results of races from Avtomotosport magazine it named as "Lotus Opel". Naturally there are no real F3 cars except two Italian Dallara F397 FIAT of Lukoil Racing team and ex Jorg Muller's Reynard 913 on which he won 1991 Monaco GP in Russian first two F3 championships. Others were "national F3 cars" as the saying went then.
Do you need results of 1998-2002 F3 Russian championship?

There were two classifications in Russian F3 in 1998. It was league A with real F3 cars (or nearly real) and league N ('N' - national), where started Formula 1600 cars, which were adapted to F3 class.

I am searching for results, dates, reports... anything.
I have some information for 2000 season here: http://www.formula2....F300_IndexE.htm, very incomplete.
Any info from 1999?
