Alan Rollinson
b. 15 March 1943, Walsall, Staffordshire
A talented driver, his big chance, an appearance at the British GP in 1965, was also his poisoned chalice, because, it came, arguably too early. Entered by ex-GP Driver Bob Gerard, Alan qualified 22nd out 23 & never got another chance in F1.
Like many other drivers before, during & after, rather than quit in a huff, Rollinson made a lasting name for himself, during a long career in numerous other formuale, most notably, British F5000. Did well in F3 as well against a certain Emerson Fittipaldi.
Another highlight was a Tasman Cup in 1973 at Teretonga.
Overall, a very good driver, at his level. Never would've been a real star in F1, I think it's fair to say, but I would say he was on the same level to Peter Gethin & look what Gethin acheived! Definitely deserved another crack at Grand Prix racing, but... that's the way it goes
Alan is still alive & living in Kidderminster, in Worcestershire.
Don't ask me for Pics - I've only ever seen a few - a lot of the info above came from Google, so that's worth a try - if not try FORIX or maybe the Motor Racing Retro site.... but don't get your hopes up
I can't really think there's more much to add about him, if It's just a general summary....

I was fortunate enough to spend 15 minutes talking to Alan at the F3 get together on the HSCC stand at Autosport International on Friday. He reminded me of the remarkable story of how he finished second to Emerson Fittipaldi in the 1969 MCD Lombank F3 championship without ever having actually raced against him that season!?!?

Tony, if I remember well, Rollinson dominated the early part of the season, then quit to become the subject of this thread, whereupon Emmo entered the series and won basically every one of the remaining races.

That's the gist of it Michael. Alan's recollection is that he was marginally ahead on points going into the last round but his Jeff Uren Brabham BT28 blew up in testing & Emerson won the final race at Brands to take the championship.

This was Jo's car from the 1970 season which he bought off March. Alan told me that he didn't fit the cockpit at all and that copious amounts of foam was used to keep him in place which compacted during the race, allowing Alan to slide up and down the car! He finished in 5th place in the Rothmans International Trophy Race that was won by Pedro Rodriguez in the BRM P160.

I think that the first 45 or so posts should be removed from this thread as they are total b....cks
Agreed Ted. One never quite knows whether to revive a thread or open a new one when confronted with a dilemma such as this.....

Maybe Twinny can prune some of the old & withered roots?

Good Day to All
In an effort to track down the history of my McLaren M4A, I came across a picture of Allan Rollinson in the Frank Lythgoe Racing Mclaren M4A (car number 23) at the 1967 Oulton park Gold cup. Can anyone help with more pictures, race results or perhaps a race entry .
Thank you

See if this helps:
The Nostalgia Forum is not like a vending machine that accepts coins of unknown origin and denomination and pumps out the product you require.
It is a small specialist shop that very probably can supply what you ask for, but you must provide measurements and some other kinds of descriptive currency to even begin the transaction. The shopkeepers are unfailingly generous and often charitable, but they cannot give when they do not know what the client is after.
Good description Frank, However, sometimes the vending machine dispenses condoms!
Full marks to rdrcr for using the Babel Fish to find out what the person was after.
As for some demanding to know why the information is required, well, how pompous...the great thing about this Forum is the twists and turns threads often take, sometimes from the simplest of beginnings on voyages of discovery

Happy New Year (well almost ) . I dont get here as offen as I would like. Thank you Tim Murray for the the F2 results....very helpful. The search for the history of my Mclaren M4 has moved forward little by little and this week a couple of photos were found on on face book with Alan racing his "Duck Eggs Blue" Mclaren F2 car (chassis 200-11E) . Alan raced this car only 5 times during the 67 season before the car moved on to Robs Lamplough.
Would anyone have a current contact address for Alan please ? I hoping he may have more info and pictures.
Thank you
