Or in the case of the gentleman wielding the fuel churn, what happened to his shirt full stop?
Ripped off his body by screaming teenage girls? Was a time, you know, when rock stars dreamed of being F 1 mechanics!!

This photo arrived amongst the batch of Tony Johns 1973 British GP photos and I looked and thought "Surely a fatal" and messaged Tony saying I wouldn't post it if it was. He sent more info.
Tony wrote...
"The accident happened at Abbey on the eighth lap when the Dave Matthews’ Capri and Brodie’s Escort were lapping Gavin Booth’s 1 litre Mini. All three drivers were taken to hospital.
Another entrant driver was Vince Woodman, a Ford Dealer from Bristol. My Australian A7 friend Dennis McIlroy who organised my Blue Escort van worked in his panel shop. At the time there was a real GT40 in the workshop. It was Dennis who introduced me to the Bristol Austin 7 Club."
Given what these photos published in Autosport show, Matthews was one very lucky man that day.

That Silly Season article was....let's say, a little wide of the mark. Although had it transpired as hinted, it would have been very interesting.

It looks like the entries in a competition to create the most outlandish rumours.
With the benefit of hindsight perhaps one aspect should have transpired "Nobody was granted a seat with BRM". With the exception of 1974 South African GP the demise of BRM at end of 1973 would have saved a lot of embarrassment.

The accident was horrendous, Stephen: Dave Matthews and Dave Brodie were very lucky, but I believe Gavin Booth never really recovered. The saloon race and the shunt have been discussed somewhere or other on TNF, either in an a 1973 British GP thread, or perhaps 'personal photos from the track'.

I'd have paid to see that! Especially Emerson at Tyrell.

Another from Tony's 1973 British GP photos - Marlboro BRM (but I'll leave it to the experts to work out which one of the 3 entries)
Stephen
Excellent! Now we can get back to arguing about the colour of the cars. That BRM is clearly in the proper Marlboro brown though.

Lauda at Hill ? Lauda's performance in 1973 raised some eyebrows, so how would he have ended up in a back-marker team ?
Amon and Jarier at Ferrari ? Jumper would have looked good in a Ferrari, but would either driver have been able to develop the car as Lauda eventually did ?
Did Parnelli and Penske ever contemplate 2 car teams ?
