This past weekend I saw an ad for the new Ford F-150.....the ad made a big deal about the availability of torque all through the rev range, and credited this to the "novel" spark plug design.

There was an inset photo of the spark plug.....the "business end" (in the combustion chamber) was this long, tubular metallic doohickey - basically the plug didn't look like any automotive plug I've ever seen.

What gives?

I saw that too. In addition to the long shell, the ground wire forms a loop instead of the traditional "L." The 5.4L engine is a 3V design - maybe a deep combustion chamber for some reason?

I think it would relate more to cumbustion chamber design and maybe spark plug location.

You can see a review of the new truck here, with a picture of the spark plug.

http://www.pickuptru...ford/f1505.html

I don't think it's anything special. It's just long for packaging purposes. If you look at the top picture, you can see the sparkplug comes in at an angle from the intake side of the cylinder. The plug says "platinum", but with the little nib of an electrode, it looks more like an iridium plug, but who knows.

Nothing like having a really non-standard part so you are totally screwed when you are out in BuFU in your truck and you need a spark plug. If I owned that truck, I don't want to know how much I'm going to get ass raped for a set of damn spark plugs.

"Because of the dual intake valves, breaking is improved by 40 percent over the old 5.4-liter, with peak airflow at 350 cu ft per minute versus 250 in the old engine."

What the HELL are they talking about? Engine braking, possibly? I know that some dickweeds just don't get the difference between 'breaking' and 'braking', but this is supposed to be a professional press release ...

Breaking = breathing. How much do the "professionals" get paid to write this stuff?

Ah yes, the old "let the spellchecker change a misspelled word into something unintended" problem.

Will do. Just a matter of working for the money, and then finding time between the work to get work done on the car! :
