Have any other UK posters seen those incredibly naff ads for BBCi featuring Jensen Button? It's enough to turn the stomach, and I freely admit to switching channel when the damn thing comes on....

What are the other F1 related ads that get people's goat?

Jean Alesi did one for shampoo - the voiceover made him sound like a continuity announcer.

Michael Schumacher fiddling with his hair in a L'Oréal shampoo ad - just because he's worth it, apparently. The man may have won championships but his hair clearly isn't up to shampoo ad standards. And the voiceover was way beyond tacky. But if kitsch is your thing...

That Schumacher one was just hillarious. I understand he was pretty ticked off when he found out they weren't using his real voice.

Having said that, poor poor Jenson, sat there and being forced to make stupid comments about the way a remote control handles . . . . :rotfl:

Still, he probably got a big fat cheque at the end of it. . .

Honda used JV in two ads one for a Civic and one for the Accord.
Apparently a lot of Canadians didn't know who he was because shortly after the commercials started airing a caption appeared "Jacques Villeneuve Formula One Driver"
What was really hilarious was the tag line..."Inside every Civic/Accord...there's a Honda engine."
Fortunately they didn't show the part where JAcques would run for cover to escape the impending explosions.
:p

ugh, yes... that Honda ad. :o

OT: I used to really like the Chip Ganassi/Target commercials they had. Especially the one when they had Jimmy Vasser sending Juan Montoya on a 'Snipe' hunt.

Alesi definitely did one, it may have been for Elvive. Some stupid intro voiceover about GP drivers and Alesi, complete with cheesy grin, saying 'And I push it to the limit!' - only the voice was more like a newsreader, in perfectly modulated RP tones.

Those were even more funny given that they were made to make fun of Montoya (like the used car commercial) yet Montoya started whipping Vasser like the houseboy from about race 1.

Schumacher's ad for Vodafone where he's playing some sort of game on his mobile .... naff or what? Only exceeded in naffness by the ones featuring Beckham.

The Button BBC ad is pure crap, IMHO.

Michael Andretti's in an ad where he's in the passenger seat giving directions to the driver....

"Turn left, now get ready to turn left at the next light. OK, at the next turn go left. Now left again"

Driver, "Can't we turn right?"

Michael, "Why would you want to do that?" :drunk:

the Ad for BBCi really dos not show JB in good light does ;) in fact he comes over as a bit thick

The only half decent ad i've seen with an F1 driver was the god awful Murray & Damon Kill pizza hut commercials.

The BBC i promotion from Jensen Button just deals his public persona another damaging blow in the eye of the casual viewer it reinforces a perception from so many embarassing pit lane interviews - which may or not be true, of the man's personality in real life.

I somehow can't imagine James Hunt doing that for the BBC in a way that made him look so childlike. If he could not have put his own stamp on what they were trying to do , he should not have accepted it - I doubt if he would have been paid much - if at all - it was the BBC !

They had him chauffering Morecombe & Wise once...after a hair raising ride, James asked for a tip - Eric replied 'keep away from the women'.

The Michael Andretti S2000 is really off.

I used to enjoy the Target/Ganassi one with Zanardi "And that's why I drive cars without doors" Was pretty funny IMO.

Or the Schumacher Vodaphone ad where a couple of race fans are in the garage and they take a photo with their mobile - ridiculous or what, 1: getting in the garage and 2: being allowed to photograph the Rory Byrne creation.

I did like the (now somewhat older) FIAT commercial featuring Schumi and Rubens (unwilling to hand over the car).
The commercial with Mika and David (coffee stop) was not too bad either.

There's a loads of them, but most are hardly worth noticing.

Now, the absolute best ones ever were the Tag-Heuer commercial series "Don't crack under pressure" featuring amongst others Ayrton Senna. Now, the bizarre thing is that they pulled the Senna ad (in fact, the entire 'don't crack under pressure' program iirc) alsmost directly after he died, but in 2000 they started using Senna again for their "what are you made of" campaign. Odd, very odd.

The best one ever was the Murray Walker/Damon Hill Pizza Hut ad.

Damn that was funny. :rotfl:

In his auto-bio, Murray wrote that they aparantly released the "stuffed crust' here (Australia) just so they could use that ad!!!

Montoya did a soft drink ad for latin America a couple of years ago where he stops at the pits for a drink, goes out and still wins the race. Irritating as hell, and that's from a Montoya fan.

Black Jack Brabham (AFAIR) did some adverts in the late seventies for Goodyear Tyres.

My memory is vague on this, but I believe it involved him standing on a rain swept pedestrian crossing "trusting" his life to the goodyear bags.

What absolutely incensed me at the time was that the NSW Highway Patrol Police were refusing to drive their pursuit vehicles fitted with, you guessed it...Goodyears.

The advert could have been made way before the Police drivers boycotted the rubber but I was annoyed every time I saw Jack and the "offending" ad.

I thought long and hard before posting this one because Jack is a National icon for very good reason (no denying that). I supose it just goes to show the dangers of endorsing stuff for cash :)

Schumacher/Vodafone ad is bad.

But the one I really hate right now is Toyota using Ryan Briscoe. He's driving a road car and the engineers are asking him Q's we're supposed to believe are about an F1 car. Then they ask "And how are the cupholders?" FFS, guys. There's another that's as bad: Briscoe conversing with the engineers over the radio, similar set of questions ... then Briscoe wants to know who picked the music and the engineers get this funny look on their faces like they didn't know he was in a road car.

I did like most of Hakkinen's commercials for Mercedes Benz. Especially the ones featuring Boris Becker.
Anyone remember Boris and Mika at Trafalgar Square London? Looking for the way to Wimbledon and this woman's cvoice coming from the off "Mika - I want to have your baby!"
Hilarious!

Yep the BBCi ad is really poor. There's one edit of it that made me laugh though - just as he leans over in his chair and lifts one leg, the fire flares up!

I can't wait for an advert featuring grand-old Bernie - wonder what it'll be ? Come to think of it Flavio Briatore would be a good feature for Viagra!
