With Schumacher and Barrichello re-signing for another 2 or more years and David Coulthard still at McLaren after, what 7 or 8 years, who is the driver that stayed with the same team the longest?

From 1960-1968 with Lotus.

I think it might be Mika Hakkinen (nine years with McLaren 1993-2001) although he didn't do much racing in '93. Schumi and DC have both currently done eight years with their respective teams. Jack Brabham drove for his own team for nine seasons, although not always in a Brabham.

Now, how about Christian Lautenschlager:

Started 1906 as riding mechanic of Otto Salzer on Mercedes GP in the Ardennes Circuit race.
1908.........French Grand Prix........Mercedes GP..................1st
1913.........Grand Prix de France...Mercedes GP..................6th
1914.........French Grand Prix........Mercedes 18/100...........1st
1922.........Targa Florio.................Mercedes 1922 TF..........10th
1923.........Indianapolis 500.........Mercedes Indianapolis....AC
1924.........Targa Florio.................Mercedes 1924 TF..........11th

Sixteen years racing for the same firm? I know it's pushing the definition a bit.

What about Caracciola with Mercedes? Other than a spell with, I think, Alfa Romeo, Caratsch was with Mercedes for a long time.

Yes indeed. His second stint with Mercedes could be said to run from the 1934 Klausen hillclimb to the 1952 Prix de Berne (as he didn't actually get to race for Joel Thorne at Indy '46).

As - for once - no one has put "F1" in the title, how about Stewart with Tyrrell from 1964-73?

AJ Foyt, driver for his own team, as car owner, 1966-1992? (28 years)

Don,

Don,

Well, if you want to include later years as a former Driver, AJ Foyt must be some kind of record:

AJ Foyt Enterprises Driver--1966-92=28 years

AJ Foyt Enterprises Car owner. team manager--1966-2004=39 seasons.

That would mean Petty would be 45 years, though not consecutively.

It would seem that Richard Petty and A.J. Foyt, Jr. seem to be the two at the head of the pack, especially if you include the team management along with the driving chores.

Pretty impressive when you think about it.

How long was Ernest Friderich with Bugatti? He worked for them for many years both before and after his driving career.

Don,

When one thinks about it, AJ Foyt's driving career alone surely must rank as the longevity championship! If I include just Indy cars, that's 1958-1992, 35 years!

Now, a trivia question for you? Who did Foyt first drive for, when he came to USAC in 1956, and what was his very first ride?

A.J. Foyt is defintely the oldest driver who drove in Indianapolis, he drives until 1992, he was 57 years old!

Giuseppe Campari should be a good candidate, first to last race for the same outfit:
1913, 28 Sep.....Parma-Poggio di Berceto.....5th..............(A.L.F.A. 40/60)
1933, 10 Sep.....Monza Grand Prix Heat 2.....Fatal Crash (Alfa Romeo Type B/P3)

Come to think of it, Rudolf Caracciola should also be ranking near the top of your list:
1923, 3 April......Raststadt-Ettlingen.....2nd............Mercedes 6/25/40 hp
1952, 18 May.... Preis von Bern...........Accident.....Mercedes-Benz 300 SL ;)

I rather thought that the criterion for this thread was continous length of service for one team or firm only. I don't think that some of the names submitted can claim this. :)

Tim
You're correct in that my initial question was to find out which driver has stayed with the same team for the longest period of time, continuously, but the answers posted are still interesting.

To actually drive a racecar at speed on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway? Not even close! I believe Mario Andretti owns that dubious distinction, does he not? Even though he crashed, a whisker away from being either a disabling crash, or worse, fatal, this past May, Mario is well past 60.

Now, my question: Whom did AJ Foyt first drive for in USAC, and what did he drive? (hint: it wasn't a race car!)
