[Nanni Dietrich]

I remember I’ve read some years ago about an european series for single-seaters (similar to F. 3000 or so) “sponsored” by great football Teams.
I’ve seen a Barcelona FC car, an Arsenal car a Real Madrid car… but I’m not sure this series began.

Some years ago I remember a GT car (a Lister Storm?) in black-and-white colours of Newcastle United F.C. and perhaps one or two Dallara-Nissan WS in Spain with some football teams colours.

It’s wonderful to think a grid of single-seaters (Formula 1? why not…) like those:

Red for Liverpool, Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Benfica, Independiente…
Blue and white for Lazio, Celta Vigo, Manchester City, Schalke-04, Grasshoppers, Porto…
Blue and black for Internazionale…
White for Santos, Real Madrid, Borussia Moenchengladbach, Dinamo Kiev, Valencia…
Blue for Chelsea, Everton, Glasgow Rangers, Bordeaux…
Purple for Fiorentina, Perth Glory, Anderlecht…
Yellow for Nantes, Borussia Dortmund, Fenehrbahce…
Blue and yellow for Parma, Boca Juniors…
Red and white for Arsenal, Ajax, River Plate, PSV, Athletic Bilbao, Internacional…

CTA-Arsenal?

The proposed series you're thinking of was Premier 1 GP, Nanni. Whatever happened to that?

Hmmmmmm......as a football fan, I'd be more than a little bit narked if my team started pouring money into motor racing when they should be spending any spare cash on new players or building a new stadium. But I concede that ain't going to happen if, like me, your team happens to be Luton Town.

Still, there could be a positive side to all this. A racing team sponsored by the Milton Keynes Dons, aka Wimbledon, aka Franchise FC, could adopt the Don's all black third strip and give us cars in something akin to the JPS Lotus livery. Or Plymouth Argyle, with their green shirts, would let us see a return to the British national racing colours.

As suspected, this Premier 1 Grand Prix never happened, although there have been some official presentations. I recall Pedro Lamy posing with the Benfica-liveried car, and there were also rumours that Feyenoord would participate with Jacky van den Ende.
The car has recently made a surprise reappearance, now as the Formula Superfund, although the organisation is not to keen on admitting it's a three year old car. It remains to bee seen whether or not this formula Superfund goed ahead ( It is supposed to replace the Euro 3000-series) as it is quite similar to the new GP2 series. The car still looks nice, though:

You can imagine the series...

The Manchester United car will not have a great noise, but instead emits a high-pitched whine.

The Real Madrid car will have a huge budget but struggle to get to the finish.

The Juventus team will slip a few million euros to the FIA to get favourable decisions.

Everyone will like the Accrington Stanley car but it does not have a chance in hell of winning.

Everyone will dislike the Bayern Munich car but it will win all the time.

The Arsenal car will marry British know-how with French flair; Athletic Bilbao's will be strictly a local effort.

And the British GP will be at a venue that is beset by traffic problems, constant rebuilding and financial worries...oh, wait.

...a couple of the clubs that were going to sponsor cars in the series got involved in Dallara-Nissan when it became obvious that P1GP wouldn't ever happen, didn't they?

There were several putative P1GP cars. At least one Reynard mockup was shown, as was a Dallara. Is the new car some remote relative of the Reynard? (None of the names involved in it mean much to me).

According to the press-pack, the car is built by Force 10 technology Ltd. John Travis, of former Lola and Penske fame, is technical director. The car is equipped with a 4 litre Judd V10 ( a bit strange, given the current trend for smaller engines, right?) that's said to deliver more than 700 hp. It weighs 576 kg with oil and water, with 22 kg of ballast to balance different driver weights.
Other key figures in the series are Karl Wendlinger and Vincenzo Sospiri. I saw its first laps and must admit that the car sounds simply wonderful...
Wonder if it will ever race.

Leeds has been my fav british football team since the glory days of the early 1970s...they had great players like, David Harvey, Norman Hunter, Billy Bremner, Allan Clarke and above them all Peter Lorimer...!

The glory days faded in the 1980s....but they were back again in the 1990s...!

Now they're once again back in the doldrums...

The team would have sacked their team manager and brought in a high profile man from another team - then the car would struggle around, most unimpressively for most of the races, but then somehow contrive to come through and win most of them.

No.

But modern Formula 1 focusses on the drivers. For example, the leader list always shows drivers' names but ignores the cars. It is a competition for individuals, albeit with a team backing them up.

The only time I have seen teams competing as teams is in banger racing with the likes of the 'Catford Goodies' fielding a team of six matt black cars against the 'F-Troop' from Walthamstow with six claret and blue cars. The winner being the last car still running.

Well, I imagine those who've followed the BTCC closely would be the first to beg to differ! And that merely - IMHO - scratches the surface...

The Iso-Marlboro was definitely green. I always thought it was a particularly nasty colour scheme.

Yes, I remember that Barcelona FC was a sponsor of Gabord Competition in World Series by Nissan in 2002.


The presentation of this team with drivers Ricardo Zonta and Christiano Tuka Rocha was held at the Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona.

The Vile car would have to be a Panhard-Levassor. Great in the 1890s but not much since the War.

Birmingham City would have to be the Scarab...great to look at, royal blue through & through, successful in the lower leagues but an also-ran with the Big Boys...
