This sounds like a silly question, but I need some help from forumites familiar with German television, particularly in the Stuttgart area.

I am traveling to Stuttgart (from the U.S.) for a Medical Convention and due to arrive on March 6, thus I will need to watch Melbourne from the confines of my hotel room - or tavern if anyone has recommendations :)

#1. What network broadcasts F1 in the Stuttgart area?
#2. Do they broadcast live, or tape delay? What is the time difference between Germany and Australia if it is live?

Thanks in advance!

I think German RTL broadcast it live (including practice/warm up and loads of interviews) during the weekend. Germany is 10 hrs behind Melbourne during wintertime.

Don't know if this is still the case but back in the late 90's RTL was not terestrially available in parts of Stuttgart

But fear not....

Your Hotel room WILL have RTL
and due to jet lag you will most likely be wide awake at 3 am

in addition to that you get ALL FRIDAY on the RTL owned n-tv news station
Part of the Sat. practice session...RTL
All qualifying on Saturday....RTL
RACE...RTL, They have 12 minutes of ads during the race

You will then be rather upset when you watch SPEED and their 35-40 min of ads when you come back to the USA.

Have fun Bennett :D

Stuttgart is +1 hr off London time. Other than in an odd and small, family owned hotels, all international hotels will gladly assist you once you arriwe. You might not get however 3 hrs broadcast (pre/post race chat).

you will likely see everything of almost every session on rtl. on cable in your hotelroom you would probably also get austrian channel 1, called orf 1, where they will have friday prequalify, saturday qualifying and the race with one hour prerace features (which might be abit dull occasionally). BUT you will have heinz prueller during the sessions and race, the greatest german speaking f1 commentator of all time, who has already been travelling around the world with bernie and f1 since 1964, when he was barely 20. if you understand german, he is good fun, because he still so excited about everything. :) also, there might be alot of bars where you can probably watch it on tv. after all, stuttgart is the hometown of mercedes.

Thanks for everyone's replies and advice.

I will indeed most likely be awake at strange hours so I will probably be watching live. I haven't spoken German in years, but I'm hoping to enjoy Heinz Prueller's commentary.

I am also certain that when I return to the States, I will miss the German coverage and realize that my endurance of the SPEED broadcasts is a punishment for some misdeeds in a past life.

Otherwise, many thanks again!

The best replies are those from DSF. They take away some parts of the race but you get about one hour. They concentrate on the important things (you don't have to wait three laps for the reply of an incident) and you get some interviews to the drivers mixed with the race (e.g. if a drivers does not end the race). An easy to see package.

DSF should be on all "decent" hotels in Germany. During the European season they have have the F1 coverage at 20:00 on Sunday but in Melbourne is possible you can get it during the day (in the case you get asleep during the race).

About RTL you have to know something. They have one of the best coverages but a LOT of commercials during the race. So if you have two channels better. The best will be to find a bar to watch it on Premiere. Probably even in the hotel.
