Now here's a thought - Just suppose that Climax had gone ahead with the flat 16 and it had proved a winner, might we have seen an H-32 in 1966?

And here he is in practice with the 43

There are some great photos in that set. I note a trace of oil smoke in that Clark shot, and even more in this one:

Presumably this is what caused Jimmy to switch to the 33.

On the race day at Oulton Park I saw the BRM H16 engine from Team Lotus being loaded into the BRM transporter. It would have been interesting to see Clark in the 43 in the Gold Cup. The next time I saw a 43 at Oulton Park was in F5000.

I like the 43. I have always thought it be a most handsome beast, but it never comes up in anyone's "Best Looking F1 car" list. And of course it pre-dated the 49 in using the engine as a lump of chassis.

The H16 BRM engine has always fascinated me too. It always seemed a logical thing to do. It's a pity we don't see any whacky engineering these days. All we get to talk about is ugly noses.

I suppose I must be odd. :

I still think the same. Great to see it at the Revival last year...

Ten years down the road and nothing has changed. :well:

Those noses have, they've got much worse, and I'm not commenting on some TNF members.

Hello,

at the moment I am searching for reference photos for my Lotus 43 in scale 1/20th Monza 1966.

Now on one photo I have seen green springs on the rear dampers what color are the springs on the front dampers?

I assume the steering wheel and the seat are red, is this correct?

Thanks for any help.

John-w

Imagine if Repco had come in a year or two earlier with motor based on the Pontiac slant 4...

I've looked John  There's very little that actually shows the front suspension without the nose fitted.

Just read an interesting feature/interview of Doug Nye on/with Maurice Phillippe published on Autosprint in 1971. Philippe said that when they received the first H16 for the 43 in 1966, a first, peculiar problem arose: they needed six mechanics just to take it off from the lorry, so heavy it was. "A little bit heavier than the scheduled 215 kg", in typical funny understatement.

Every time I hear this story it takes more and more mechanics to lift the engine! First it was three, then four, now six...

Yes, and three of those six have been named as Geoff Capes, Giant Haystacks and Arnold Schwarzenegger...

Coo.  That 'Autosprint' feature on Maurice is a real blast from the past.  If asked I would not have recalled it.  I have often wondered what became of his monocoque-chassised special pictured there...the MPS.  As a driver he was very quick in his later Lotus 7.

There is a colour cockpit shot of the 43 at Monza on page 174 in Andrew Tulloch's book, "Jim Clark, Grand Prix Legend" which shows the dash panel and steering wheel in red as well as red padding to the seat. In the same book on page 178 there is a black and white shot of the front of the car without the nosecone in the paddock in Mexico and you can see quite a bit of detail.

David

PS - I tried to quote John W's post #108 but it didn't work for me.

... and by now it's eight!

Like David Lawson I am having trouble posting photos having managed to find a way round getting quotes in my posts!

Ten years down the road and nothing has changed. :well:

On the contrary, F1 in 2014 has some of the whackiest engineering of all time. And Renault seems to have created a power unit that will make the BRM H16 look like a paragon of reliability and performance.

Be careful what you wish for, as my old Grandma never said to me.

Very true - my earlier post was poorly worded. What I was trying to say was that the cars, especially the noses, are still as ugly as sin.
