Off the normal beaten track for TNF but - being well aware of the breadth of speed-sport interest here - does anyone happen to have access either to published scale plans of Sir Malcolm Campbell's original pre-war 'Bluebird' World Water Speed Record boat K3, or know where to point me towards some???

Back copies of 'Model Boats', 'Motor Boat & Yachting' or 'Speed & Power' perhaps??????

Kevin Desmond's great book on power boat speed reproduces ideal scale sectioned drawings of Segrave's 'Miss England II' but nothing other than perspective drawings of 'Bluebird' K3.

Any help would be most gratefully accepted...

Doug:

There is a company called Touchwood Models that makes miniatures of both boats, plus some others. Obviously, he had plans of some kind. The man's name is Stuart Delf, and he can be contacted at

Doug,

I'm pretty sure the old 'Aeromodeller Plans Service', which incorporated non-aviation plans from other titles in the Model Aeronautical Press stable, used to do this one in their 'Scale Drawings' range. M.A.P. became Nexus Special Interests, and they went out of business (or at least, that business) some years ago. The last 'Scale Drawings' catalogue I have — must be at least five years old — contains only aircraft, artillery pieces and armour — no boats, ships, cars or trains, all of which used to be available. The present copyright holder/whereabouts of the master plans is something of a mystery, but someone must have them somewhere.

Doug,
You could try Fred Harris (contact details on http://www.merseyworld.com/replicast )
I think he used to do plans professionally for modelling mags, and has a particular interest in water speed record craft.

The hull was designed by Fred Cooper, and built by the Saunders-Roe yard on the Isle of Wight. The installation of the engine was supervised by Alf Poyser from Rolls, and post-design engineering was handled by Reid Railton. Dunno where the plans might have ended up, but at least this is where they started.

A gentleman called Paul Foulkes-Halbard owned Bluebird K3 until his recent death.

I believe he was an avid collector of Campbell related items, and it would be my guess (especially as he spent many years rebuilding K3) that he may well have come across the original plans.

Perhaps his museum (the name escapes me at the moment) may be able to help?

Not sure who owns this or Bluebird now though.
