PS. DC is actually having a wonderful season, Canada apart that is. I think he got smarter, he now makes a season's worth of mistakes in one single race, delivering flowless performances regularly. One more race like the last one and it will be a Michael/David private affair. Who would have guessed before season's start (apart from you, of course).

"King" Hiro (the Japanese CART driver who owns Swift - his first name is Hiro, and for the love of me I can't remember his last name). Anyway, whenever Emerson Fittipaldi was lapping him, he would come over the radio to his pit crew and complaing about "King Hiro". It wasn't for quite a while that his crew relized that Emmo was a second or two late hitting the "talk" button on his steering wheel, and what he was really saying was ****ing Hiro. But by this time, the nickname had spread up and down the pitlane (even one of the commentators on ABC used the nickname before it was found out what it really meant).
"The Mobile Chicane" I was watching an F1 race with a non-racing fan, when (I think) Hunt called one of the drivers a mobile chicane. I then had to expain to my friend what a chicane is (a slow corner that causes a lot of accidents). We both burst out laughing at that discription of a driver.
Cheers,
EKB

I can't be arsed with the same argument over and over again.
Still it's good to know there is another DC fan here, gee, that must tally to an all time high, of oooh, dare we stake it as high as 5?

I do not hide the fact that I am a Mercedes fan first and driver fan second. But I am genuinely a DC fan, I am also a Mika fan and would be happy to see either of them win the WDC. Admittedly I first took a shine to them because they drive for Mercedes but now I am a fan purely on merit.
I don't know what I am going to do when MS starts driving for Mercedes

1) Clark
2) Stewart
3) Dumfries (just kidding)
4) DC
I believe that J-P Jarier earned the nickname, "Rabbit," due to his quick starts.
Hulme was "The Bear," I think.
of course there was "The Pampas Bull," Jose Frolian Gonzalez . . .
and Lauda "The Rat" . . .
and Mansell, "Il Leone."
with all these animals, little wonder some call it the F1 Circus!

Ickx: Le Passager de la Pluie (The Rain Passenger - after the title of a French movie) or Mr 24 Hr (referring to his 6 Le Mans victories)
Prost: Prostichon (cornichon = pickles in French)
Senna: ET, the Extraterrestrial
Panis: Penis
Hulme: The Bear
Gachot: Gachîs (mess)
Lauda: the Beancounter, the Rat
Brabham: Black Jack (my favorite)
Gianni Lavaggi: Johnny Carwash

Yes, Denny was the Bear, Black Jack was his boss, nobody, however has mentioned FJ, world champion and all (put FJ into search on Nostalgia and it will come up many, many times).
Frank Matich, who dominated anything he went into in Australian racing (except the Tasman series) between 1961 and 1973, once went through a period when his contemporaries called him 'Frank Who?'...
There was once a series in Northern America called the 'Bruce and Denny Show'
And what about Rosebud? Another World Champ, this was the name by which he was known in some circles, including those where his car was prepared for F. Atlantic.
Mario was Super Wop, too.
My Newsletter carried a story once about nicknames in past Aust racing... there were some good ones in there, ones that weren't used to the respective parties' faces...
Ellen would seeming appreciate this one... The Knife and The Sheath... a driver and his new wife, un-named because still alive...
And Essing Jay the Bee... Smiling Jack The Bastard, rumoured to have killed his parents with an axe... no wonder he had the money to import an Alfa P3 to race here... Jack Saywell.

Hiro Matsushita. The CART commentators could not pronounce his last name, settling instead on "mashoosta"
CART commentators also prefer short first names
Massimiliano (Max) Papis
Alessandro (Alex) Zanardi
Teodorico (Teo) Fabi
I wonder, was Juan Manuel Fangio II nicknamed "one-two?"

Wasn't Juan Fangio called il Maestro? The Prince without a Crown was non-other than Stirling Moss. Anyone out there know if Jochen Rindt had a nickname or if Tazio Nuvolari was known other than the little Manchurian?

J-P Jarier was best known as "Jumper Jarier". I am not sure if this was from his tendancy to fly over the curbing, or this this was a joke about his being a French person (AkA 'a frog').
Brambilla was best known as the "Monza Gorrilla", although I think he had an elder brother who also had the same nick-name ? (And Magic his victory for March in Austria was actually in 1975. In 1977 Alan Jones got his first victory in a "Shadow DN8-Ford" at this circut - also in the wet).
Ronnie Peterson was initally known as 'Bungalow', before people gained respect for him and started calling him 'Super-Swede'.
Jody Scheckter was briefly known as 'Baby Bear' when he first started driving for McLaren as one of Hulme's teammates.

And to prove my point, i just had itv( Britain) teletext service up, and they had their headline reading, Flying Scot targets Austria win, put up the page and they were writing about DC.
MercFan, Mercedes as in the German Auto Vehicle specialists, or Mercedes sporting division, i.e McLaren?
Personally they are all my favourites, Mercedes road cars, are great.

Just thought i'd share!
