I've got a fresh install of Windows XP, with every update applied. When I run GPL the installer dies; Windows tells me that "NTVDM.EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close".

Is this a known problem with GPL under WinXP? Any workarounds or suggestions?

I'm afraid i've never installed GPL on winXP, but as i know several people that run GPL and winXP i would think it wasnt a problem. What you could do if you have two or more cd/dvd drives is to try to install it from the other drive. I know there has been some issues in win2000 (and perhpas other windows versions) if you have more than one cd-rom drive... somehow on my computer it will only install from the cdrom that comes first in the line (i.e. slave on the primary ide controller in my system)

Other than that, i guess the best place to as this question will be in the GPL forum at www.racesimcentral.com if you haven't sorted it out allready :)

Well, I have two CD-Rom drives. I've tried running it from both the DVD Rom and the DVD Burner drive -- same result.

As for video card: well, I would hope an NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti4400 would at least be acceptable to install GPL.

I'll check out www.racesimcentral.com...

Do you mean that you can't install GPL, or that after installing, when you run GPL, you get that message. That's something I haven't heard of. GPL runs perfectly on Windows XP, but it must be patched with the Papyrus patches first. That error sounds like a computer problem, not a GPL one.

Check out http://www.experts-e...Q_20592945.html (found in a simple search for NTVDM.exe, xp, error) "NTVDM is the NT Virtual DOS Machine, which should only be required if you're installing something which runs in DOS mode." So, it seems that this has something to do with DOS. You're not selecting anything to do with DOS during the installation, are you?

Nope. No DOS stuff here. It's a fresh install too -- and it's known good hardware, so it ain't a computer problem.

The error comes up during install.

Having said that, I have found and fixed the problem. It is a GPL problem -- specifically, the Sierra installer barfs if you have dual monitors. I disabled the second monitor and it installed fine. Patched it using the all-in-one patch and it runs fine. It even runs fine with the second monitor enabled again -- so it's just the installer that doesn't like dual monitors.

I have to wonder what the connection is or is it just coincidence that the install worked after shutting down one monitor. Have you tried installing any other games with both monitors enabled?

The only other game I've tried to install since I got the dual monitor setup going was QuakeIII, and it installed fine.
