According to the excellent (for those interested in vexillology) Flags of the World website, in their Racing section:

4.1 Flags:

The minimum size of all flags is 60cm x 80cm except the red and chequered flags which should be at least 80cm x 100cm.

I noticed that someone is wondering about the origin of the chequered flag at the bottom of the page. Anyone know anything more about that?

I actually was asked upon GP flags.. and curiously enough all I can find out was the flag codes and that is it. They recall the flag as a "standard" flag.

thanks guys

we computer programmers have a saying...

"you know there's not many bugs left when people start spellchecking the source code"

It may well be that the checkered flag did not start in racing at all but in some other form of endeavor such as Heraldry, Horse racing or even the old Games of Greece or Rome.
If someone is an expert in the Art of Heraldry it might be in this area where the truth or at lest some of it lies.
The checkered flag is representative of the chess board
and therefore is very old and I believe it to be untraceable in its origin. But one thing is for sure and that is that it is older than automobile racing.

One must remember that some of the first drivers were also racing cyclists.
Albert Champion the spark plug manufacturer was a cyclist in France. Just how many others were familiar with flags is not known but it must have been a large percentage of men involved in automobile racing. All men in the Armies and Navies at that time were familiar with all types of flags.
