As everyone knows, including max mosely (http://f1.racing-liv...11093649.shtml], F1 is boring--but it is the only racing series I know. I would like to start watching another type of racing until F1 stops being the Ferrari Only series. Any suggestions? What kind of racing currently gets your heart pumping?

Also, what are the cool stories currently in your favorite series, who is leading, and how does the scoring work, when are the races held, and anything else you like say about it.

Thanks. :wave:

WRC, MGP, DTM. Currently all three series offer A LOT more excitement than F1 :)

Buy or rent a kart at your local track and I promise you the most exciting racing you have ever witnessed.

If I had the money for it I would certainly do that! Go karting is great but it's also very expensive, the tyres especially!

Japanese GT cars. I forget the official designation. Speed shows highlights of the season during the winter. Some of the best racing I've seen. Plus, the cars look cool as hell.

Last season was pretty entertaining. But then I've been rooting for Paul Tracy for years. Yes, it's artificial at times, but I still like it. If they'd bring back the mandatory pit stops and institute a standing start it would improve things tremendously.

The good thing about CART is that it is truly a fan oriented series. I never miss a race. Heaven for me is an F1 race Sunday morning and a CART race Sunday afternoon. Man, my wife hate that. :)

Midgets, Sprint Cars, and Super Modifieds are where you will find real balls out racing. But that won't help non- Americans other than Canadians, Aussies, and Kiwis.

I find that any kind of racing can be great if you're there in person, I found myself enjoying IHRA drag racing just as much as the ALMS. To see the variety of drivers with your own eyes at specific corners, or shift pionts, and soaking in the paddock and local festivities is an integral part of a race weekend. And engine notes always sound better live!

Hey, I'm a SoCal, from the birthplace of Hot Rods.
The more horsepower the better.
I love the smell of Nitro, give me the 5000 hp NHRA dragsters on a cool crisp morning at Parker Avenue, Pomona.

But I dig the WRC even those those pussy cars wouldn't last 10 miles against our deserts.

Here's a nice pic of François Duval in a Ford making the dust fly in Mexico, an event that his team-mate Markko Martin won, completing some 625kms.

I don't really understand why you give such underhanded props to these undeniably awesome cars... I mean, I'm no fan of a Ford Focus in any way, but I'd be happy to get in any WRC car any day of the week!

MotoGP and DTM.

MotoGP because it's Formula 1 on 2 wheels.

DTM because it's Formula 1 with a roof.

And because amazing overtaking maneuvres are still possible in both series.

I don't know where HJK lives or if he has the same opportunities, but here in the UK, if you want to watch exciting racing, there are plenty of options. Go to almost any club race meeting and you can see closely fought racing. Especially some of the one-make series like Caterhams and TVRs which have a lot more power than grip and minimal aero. The driver can really make the difference in these series. The best racing that I saw last year was the historics at the Goodwood Revival meeting - plenty of four wheel drifting through the corners and lots of good-natured and sporting on-track rivalries - door to door, without knocking each other off the track.

In fact, sadly, almost ANY other sort of racing can provide more thrills and spills and more satifaction for the spectator than the current F1. And as Spamula One rightly said, actually attending race meetings gives a huge extra buzz compared to watching it on TV.

Don't watch it. Go there. Go to a club level race meeting. Where circuit racing starts. Some great action in Formula Ford everywhere around the globe. Tin top cars from straight off the shelf, modified street races, through to anything goes spaceframe exotica. National level GT. Small bore sports cars. Formula Vee, Formula 3 Formual Renault, Formula BMW......

Find out your nearest racetrack where serious racing is on and just go. You'll have a ball.

And usually the smaller the series the more inimate the surroundings, and the better the chance you can just walk up to a team and start chatting to someone.

Five years down the track you'll be a flag marshall, or a commentator, or photographer or mechanic or journalist or fire marshall, or even a competitor yourself.

Motor racing is even better as a participant.

You mean as entertainment value, right? One cant quite compare road racing open wheel with oval tin-tops.

As far a OW goes, no doubt Champcar (CART) Racing is the best there is. Sure, it has gone a bit downhill in the past few years, but the racing is still very good at the top of the grid, and the venues are still some of the collest around.

Forget about standing up to get a drink during a MotoGP race. The action doesn't stop. By the end of the race you can see and feel how the driver's gave the audience their moneys worth. The TV coverage with the bike cammera angles and aerial shots is excellent.

For the past few years I've been watching WRC in addition to my regular F1 fix. Its definitely worth watching, there have been many driver/team shuffles which has served to mix things up a bit.

A friend of mine, who's a motorcycle racing fan says MotoGP is the one to watch. Haven't got around to that yet.

ALso all the single make british racing series such as Caterhams, TVRs and Mini's. A lot of action, These cars have too much power, too little aero and too few brakes!!! Makes the racing amazing

I forgot to mention the one race that keeps me sane every year, the Paris-Dakar. A race/rally held over a period of 17 days, usually starting in the south of France, and traversing crazy beautiful country, ending up on the beach at Dakar. It begins Jan. 1st of every year and provides some great racing action in the middle of the dead season. It's difficult to get to know all the pilots, since there are about 400 every year, spread out over three classes, bikes, cars and transports. Would you beleive they actually race 18 tonne trucks, that carry supplies for other entries! The race always produces great wallpapers at the beginning of every year!

The World Championships on 2 wheels. :)

Not just the MotoGP class but the 250cc and 125cc classes as well. 3 races for the price of 1 (assuming that is you have Eurosport or some other channel that covers all 3 classes).

Outrigger canoeing. This sport is spreading from Hawaii to the West Coast. We use carbon fibre paddles... Lots of variables... Anyone can participate. (Hey, this is actually a racing that you can do and not just watch and dream about.)

WRC is probably the best motorsport on television and the drama and excitement of the Paris-Daker takes some beating.

MotoGP and Superbikes are also extremely entertaining for the reasons outlined by others

However, the more agricultural open wheel classes that preceded the the now slot car like perfection that is F1 take some beating and were outstanding entertainment.

I say, re-introduce F5000 with modern components, I for one would think I had died and gone to heaven!! :up: :blush:

  • World wife-carrying championships in Finland. Winner wins his wife's weight in beer. :D
  • Formula Ford is great for spectators but (I'm told) hideously expensive for competitors
  • Improved Production, if you're in Australia (http://www.ipransw.com.au/)
  • WRC
  • Aussie Legends Racing (sorry, don't know of a site for this one, and 10 seconds with google didnt help)
  • Clubman and Sport 1300. Two different categories but in Australia they tend to run a merged grid due to few competitors. Both are quite exciting
  • MotoGP

Also I saw some Lotus Elises at Eastern Creek Raceway once. They sound like a swarm of very angry bees. WOT through turn one, no braking at all. Never seen any other tintop car do that, the driver must have had balls of titanium

I've also heard about a new category being developed by Toyota. It'll be called Formula Toyota, and will be an entirely "spec" series, no real engineering work at all. So the drivers have little to no excuses :) some unofficial details here:

How about

F1 = Too little passing = BORING
NASCAR = Too much passing = BORING

NASCAR = 40 cars = 30 competitive.
F1 = 20 cars = 1 competitive.

NASCAR = Waiting for the big one.
F1 = Waiting for somebody to try to pass Ralf Schumacher.

NASCAR = Phony yellow flags
F1 = Phony people

I have to say for pure racing IMO you cant go wrong with motogp. Always exciting stuff and in regards to open wheelers -although not out yet I cant wait for the A1 grand prix. An interview over at pitpass with the creator really gives you a good idea on how it will run. The interview is a long but good read and the series shows a lot of promise.

They are everywhere, Buford. I do actually perceive F1 drivers more digesteable and genuine than those in CART, IRL, or NASCAR. Look at Speed chanel - NASCAR show. Are you telling me that all those people love each other as much as they pretend to do in the front of the lens?

I think most Nascar people are as "what you see is what you get" as anybody in the sport.
