Was quite silly around 1989:

Points score (as I remember) 20 - 18 - 16 - 14 - 12 - 10 - 8 - 6 - 4 - 3 - 2 - 1

with two runs per weekend and only a certain numbers of results counting towards the championship (points dropping system). Nevertheless with the points distribution finishing was much more important than winning.

The first three in each race received additional weight from the next event onward, which would be reduced again when he finished outside the point scoring places. This led finally to a curious "swopping" of guest drivers in the factory teams, who of course could start without additional weight and drive the points "away" from the opposition. So later every guets starter received the same weight penalty as the leading driver on the same make of car.

But nevertheless the best season "strategy" would have been to finish always around fourth place throughout the season and then try to win two times at the last event...

For the technical reglement I think a car had to be produced 5,000 times with "evolution models" needing only 500 additional cars.

To make a small Opel Kadett (Astra for the British) competitive against Mercedes 190 2,3E, BMW M3, Ford Sierra 2,0 Turbo, up to BMW 635 CSi, Toyota Supra 3,0, Opel Omega 3.0 and even Audi V8 and Ford Mustang a power/-scale system was introduced, but some comittee could also decide on additional restrictions (weight, air restrictors etc.) or advantages to compensate models performing beyond average.

This seems to have worked quite well for a while as long as the series was dominated by the privateers, but with the appearance of the manufacturers I remember lots of discussions about this issue (in particular how to deal with Audi“s fwd system).

I remember that these issues (naturally) caused much discussions, as of course almost every manufacturer claimed, that his cars had a performance disdvantage and that the winning performances were of course solely due to the abilities of his drivers...

Later the reglement was changed towards a certain capacity limit (2.5 l i think) with also a slightly revised points system, but at that time I had already lost all my interest in the series.
