I came across these photos a couple of days ago in a copy of the wonderful Italian weekly magazine, Autosprint; issue dated January 10-17, 1972.

Having recently read (archive) postings regarding this tragic accident, and getting the impression that there was a degree of uncertainty about the circumstances (the train, etc) I thought these may be of interest.

As a newcomer, I also sought advice before doing so from a senior member.

I'd be interested to hear if these images help clear up any 'grey areas'...

I can't clear up any grey areas but I was there that day - I'd never been at a track where a fatal accident had occured before, and thankfully never have since.

Bryan Falloon was a top driver - shame he went the small car route, loved to have seen him in an F5000.

Wow. Interesting stuff.

Used to avidly read the Autosport reports in England, but they never seemed enough for some reason - not sure why.

I remember as a young teenager joining something called the "F5000 Supporters Club" - or something like that - and they would send several sheets of typed A4 on all manner of US/UK/Tasman F5000 races and series for a small fee. (Seems incredible now : ).

Whatever happened to them I wonder?

I seem to recall they ran a couple of Minis in Special Saloons and were based near Snetterton.
YES!!! My memory still works! Well every once in a while anyway...

I've always been rather curious about the the car that Falloon perished in. the Stanton-Porsche (also credited as a Royston??) I was told this was a Bob Brittain (of Renmax fame) chassis. I had never seen a photo of it before, until these sad shots. I presume the engine is a 3 litre flat 8 from a 908 Porsche.

Why would anyone use such an engine in a single seater. Where did the engine come from and why did they build it. Also are there any photos of the car prior to the accident?

A 2 litre flat 8.

Yeah i know....why?

You're right about the Bob Britten connection - inevitably there'll be some BT influence somewhere.

I recall reading about the great power to weight of the Rorstan Porsche but even with someone of Falloons ability, it was never going to win against 5000s.

I wonder how much money would have been saved by just buying a McLaren M10A/B?

W ith a small block, of course.

Was Falloon's car numbered 57?

That's what the second picture seem to tell...

Strangely, I was with Britto yesterday and could have asked him about this...

Instead we just talked about Holden Geminis and looked over his lovely coupe body... I think it's a beautiful thing... and we also discussed his slide collection. He wants it all scanned to prevent it deteriorating further...

Lots of detail pics of racing cars from about 1959 onwards. Might even have this one if he did build it. I gotta get me a slide scanner... anyone can make any recommendations? I have an Acer 310S scanner to base it on...

Bryan Falloon always raced with number 57.

After the 1970/71 season, he was rated second only to McRae of the NZ drivers by a local magazine called Auto News.

Heinz didn't sell in NZ, at least not to any extent, back then

Hi Ray,

In November last year, I bought an Epson 3170 and it works just great. Great software too and the prize is very reasonable. I've been scanning a lot of slides and negatives since then and they're all just marvelous!

Ray - slide scanner - we use an Epson Perfection 1640SU with slide projection top attachment. They don't seem to be the most reliable devices - I've got through two - but the quality of the scans from the first was superb, and if anything the quality from the second has been even better -eminently reproduceable. Scans from it have been published now in several books, magazines and the national press here. Generally we're very pleased - and all, relatively speaking, costing just peanuts.

My Epsom Perfection 1670 is good with negatives, but in most pictures the skies have lines and dots all over them, but the quality is nevertheless very good. :)

Thanks for the tips, guys...

The type I'm after would be an attachment to go on my Acer 310S scanner. I get the impression that at least one of these mentioned is a complete scanner in itself?

Unfortunately, yes. I didn't know that you could get attachments to convert normal scanners into slide scanners anyway...

(The problem I'm having actually seems to only be on this cheap old computer, my decent computer has no problems with scans at all.)

This is my scanner:
http://www.amazon.co...3280549-4771836

There's a special light attached on the top of the lid, inside, which lights up the negatives and slides when you scan them, so I don't think you can convert your own scanner

It does come with a special holder to put the slides in and you can do two at a time.
