Article in today's Autosport (June 3 2004) about Anthony Davidson "breaking the lap record" at the Nurburgring Nordschleife. The game is F1 Challenge 99-02 and they downloaded the Nordschleife track from the net but annoyingly they didn't say where from

At his first attempt (including several barrel rolls and spins) he managed 8:02. He said it took him about 30 laps to really know the circuit properly at which point he managed to get it down to 5:50.401  . They then challenge anyone to beat that time.

So, anyone know where the best Nordschleife track download for F1C 99-02 is? Until now, the only Nordschleife I've had on a sim was GPL which is completely unplayable so I've been looking for a better 'Ring sim for ages.

Looks like I'll have to order myself a copy of F1C 99-02 from Amazon :)

Michael.

WOW! ANT has time for this... Not too busy!;)

BTW, I've played the 'ring on Project Gotham 2 and it wasn't bad...for an arcade type game...

You say the one on GPL sucks?!? Why is that? (Only curious, I have not tried it...)

I played the Ring on Sports Car GT a few years back - not a bad game, and not a bad rendition of the 'Ring but it did tend towards the arcade.

I've also had a go at it on Grand Prix Legends, but without a steering wheel, the game is all but unplayable and even with one, it requires a hell of a lot of patience, mainly because its a simulation, rather than an approximation, and for I suspect, because 1960s F1 cars are instrinsically harder to drive. I wouldn't describe it as completely unplayable though - with a wheel and Alison Hines' Ferrari settings, I could get a decent (read mediocre) time round most places other than the Ring.

Can anyone beat Anthony Davidson's 5.50 ?

Well it would have to be the exact track that he did it on for the times to mean anything.

[Sorry I can't do quotes - using a very weird 'homebrew' web browser that can't cope with Vb code]

This is true, but the chances of more than one person having gone to the bother of coding the Nordschleife for F199-02 are pretty low surely ?

So if you can find a download of the track for that game, and you can beat Anthony's time using the standard 2002 car (with no braking help) Autosport apparently want you to take a screen grab and send in your time.

And maybe you should give Dave Richards a call and say you'd like the Friday tester role at BAR in Montreal ;-)

It doesn't suck - it's just extremely difficult to complete a lap without an off track excursion.

GPL is very, VERY, VERY , VERY difficult to play. I have a steering wheel and pedals and am pretty good at most racing sims but it took weeks (literally) of practice before I could even get around Monza in reasonably fast time, reasonably consistenly.

Even with the patch and the much improved default setups it isn't much easier. The brake pedal is usually just a spin switch. I simply can't believe they have modelled the grip of those cars accurately or, if they have, then it's actually harder than the real thing because you're not getting any physical feedback from the car.

Consequently I found the 'Ring in GPL immensely frustrating. I was so glad to finally have a very accurate simulation of the 'Ring but so gutted that it was impossible to complete a lap without an off even when tooling around in 2nd/3rd gear. I eventually gave up as I felt I had better things to dedicate 6 months to.

It would be nice to get a sim of the 'Ring that's reasonably playable just for learning the track for when I go there for real in my M3 :)

btw Haddock, where did you get the 'Ring for Sports Car GT? I have that game (it's one of my faves) and it doesn't come with the 'Ring as standard.

GPL isn't too difficult. I did sub 8 minute laps in three of the cars before I stopped playing the game. The 'Ring is damn fun once you learn it (ok, so I played GPL for a few years!! :p)

There are two versions that I know of of the 'ring available for F1C. I haven't tried either as neither of them are particularly pretty and driving around the place in a modern F1 car just wouldn't do it for me I imagine. If you down F1RST then you can download both versions and have a go. I know one of them is the GPL version that been converted and I think the other may come from SCGT but I'm not really sure on that.

I think i found a link to it. If you click here you will find it.

The download site is very slow. 11 mb at about 1.5 kb/s, so i'm not done yet.
But when it's up and running i'm sure gonna try to beat that time.

I think AD's time is beatable. After 6 laps I got within 10 seconds and I was all over the place. The only sector I really know well is sector one so I'm sure with more track time it is beatable. One thing is for sure, that outlap is brutal.

I have installed that last night. I did only one flying lap - 6,45.5xx. Am I that better than AD? ;)

Not that I did not know the track from GPL... but boy... I was so bad at GPL

His time is abolutely beatable. I had two spins on my only lap, I slowed down too much on entry on 80% of the corners, I did not touch the setup and ... I consumed two beers before I started :drunk:
