My copy of Record of RAC British Hill Climb Championship is 122 of 250.

PS is Volume No 7 so rare because there was only a small print run or because of the period it covers being so intently studied and revered?

:)

All my numbered volumes are stated as being from a run of 500, including Vol 7, so it must be the latter, I suppose.

Hi everyone. Guess who has No 1 ? And they were specially bound for me by a printer friend with slip cases. No 13 is just being done. Unfortunately, the books did not make either Duncan or myself millionaires. The only book I ever made any money on was one about walks round Bradford !!! Although my every day job involves writing distance learning packs which, thankfully do earn an honest crust but limit the time spent on proper things eg South American Formule Libre racing (that's for you Tony Kaye).
We realised that the only way to find information was through publishing what we had so that people knew what we were missing. This accounts for errors in the earlier books.
I don't know why Vol 7 sold out so fast and it's a shame because we have found out loads more information about this period. In particular all the South African F1 races and the Formule Libre ones right back to 1934. These were supplied by the late Peter Macintosh and, would you believe all hand written - including many lap charts ! Incredible. The recent effort has been in the Crystal Palace and Goodwood books with Richard Page and Robert Barker. The second edition Crystal Palace and second edition Goodwood ones are the first ones we have had printed professionally since Vol 2. We couldn't afford it and I printed and bound up virtually all of the BB's myself and I guess that, looking at them, you can deduce this !
We are beavering away at Formula 3 (500cc) and Formula Junior and I would like to have a serious go at British Formule Libre 1934 to the mid-fifties.
Thanks for all the nice things you said about the books and Betty sends her love
Paul Sheldon

Thank goodness for people like Paul, Duncan, Betty and the entire BB team of contributors who do things for the love of a project. I'm sorry to learn, Paul, that they have not made you a millionaire, but, in all honesty, it does not come as surprising news!

Friends:

Thanks for educating me about these books. Have been collecting automotive books for many years but have only The Formula One Record Book. A quick check of Amazon (US) today revealed a few early volumes (1-5, I think) offered at prices of about $300 and up. Tom Warth (ex-Classic Motorbooks) evidently has none at present, so I wonder how many were ever sold in the U.S.

In order to keep those updated who trace all things motor racing from the cradle to the grave (hello Allen ), I should like to announce that serial numbers #2-157, #3-322, #4-188, #7-39, #8-121, #9-58, #10-35 and #11-26 as well as the 1966 Fact Book #221 are no longer with fines, they are now with me! :)

I recently acquired the new Two Volume version of "A History of the British Hillclimb Championship". Volume 1 covering 1947 to 2000 and Volume 2 covering 2001 to 2018. Neither Volume has the signed label in the front to tell me the Number and how many were printed.

The print-on-demand ones do not have limitations, so no signatures.

Labelling and numbering stopped during the process of producing 2nd Editions. At least in part this was because of the very uncertain level of interest in  these so that we did not want to over-order printing, nor restrict ourselves by saying "one of xx copies".

The exception to this is the Historic FJ series where some drivers like to get copies numbered to match their race number and sales are much more predictable.

I should point out to those still using the 1st (1990s) editions that the 2nd (and even 3rd) editions that we have been producing over the last 10 years have a great deal of new information especially with missing grids and chassis numbers.
