Hi All

I am just wondering who else has brought TOCA Race Driver 2, and what is your views on the game.  :smoking:

I got it.
Good game, but different in controls a little.
The cars seem like they arent exactly 100% on the ground and floats a little.
Maybe its just me, but i still like it nevertheless.

I havent played it online much though, but the competition is fierce there.....i can handle the competition in Project Gotham 2 better.
Love the analog acceleration....its much more reliant on it and is important to get grip on corners.

I have just brought the game two days ago and it is one of the best race sim's for a long time, the mainy different race series the game has is cool, and with all the cars and tracks active the game is even better.  :smoking:

That's the impression I got in the first version. Sometimes when I play it I feel like my car is going to float right over a guardrail. I was really hoping they'd fix that in the sequel.

Yea, that is something which is not noticable in games like PGR2 and the Gran Tourismo series.
Personally, i loved the F1 cars in GT3, but i obviously despised the tire wear.

If only GT4 has the same physics for all the cars, and there would be more F1 cars available...

Ive just got race driver 2 on playstation 2 (regrettably the v8 version this being ford/holden land) and I think its enormous fun (Im about 25% through). The variety of race types and tracks is amazing. Even the story part is amusing at times. ("listen son, the only thing you'll get from her is a rash"). Sure its a game not a sim but the cars really do feel completely different as you run through different series. Im hardly qualified to tell what a 'gt lights' feels like but it definitely seems to pick up the general characteristics of the car types. especially those fast little gt cars are enormous fun, that and the nascar oval stuff have so far been great.

The only down so far is the rally section which stunk. Amzingly bad considering it is from the people who made colin mcrae. That and the really fake seeming 'spin if you get in the gravel' thing (but hey, one can always stay out of the bloody gravel traps ;) )

All in all a great buy.

I also bought the PS2 version recently, and I love it. It only took me a week to get through the entire career mode, but there are loads of championships in free race mode that I have to do to unlock things still. The cars do float some on certain tracks, but it doesn't seem to be as bad as the original version. Those GT Lights are terrific, as are the V8s, the DTM cars, and my favorites, the Formula Fords. The rally series is disappointing, and I didn't find the big Super Trucks to be much fun either. I'm not too crazy about the oval races either. Still, there are plenty of other series and cars to keep me entertained for hours and hours.

I agree! Great game! (Surprising from Codemasters as I remember the story game Pro Race Driver sucked!)

Only thing I wonder is when you wanna race a complete season in a specific series, is there any way you can save between races? Seems to me like ounce you've started a season, you have to finish it... And as it is a nice sim game, it's fun to run full races, not small sprints... I've tried a DTM series and I'd have to sit there for about 11 hours! I couldn't find a way to save between races...

Anyone knows?

Its a good fun game, especially the DTM, V8s and this Ford GT40... the tracks are beautifully detailed, i felt in love with Kyalami, Adelaide, Vallelunga and many other, the Seat Leon Cupra is another fun car... what i dont like is the graphics inside the cars and the keyboard support, otherwise its great fun!

the circuits are great arent they? such a variety, insane scottish rallycross, ovals, gp circuits, 'classics', club circuits, street races, rally. seems to offer a LOT of replay value.

one thing Id like to say. the koenig competition 2002 is a pile of shite lol

Not sure which platform you're playing, but in the PS2 version the game autosaves to the memory card after every race. That way you can turn off the game after it saves, and when you turn it back on it'll give you the option of either continuing the championship or cancelling it.

Yeah you just have to remember to power it off rather than quite the championship.

Can anyone here win the bloody OWRS 'US 1000' oval races? they are driving me nuts, with the stick controller the car is impossibly loose

is it the pickup oval series, i won it, it is eating nerves, this is the low point in this game... then i run over some big american track races on kyalami and the track could go like 100 in about 30 seconds and i was pissed so i found the cheats and played only for fun in the dtm and aussie v8:)

No the truck oval was easy. This is the open wheel 'champcar' clone.

I dont understand the rest of your post at all, but if it means you quit pretty early in the career then you missed all the best bits, it gets WAY harder and more interesting.

I've played the PC version and I find that the game crashes on me after about 10 minutes, only in a time attack mode. I have yet to patch the game as there was no internet at the time, but maybe someone else has had the same thing? Runs on a p4 3.4, 1gb of RAM, 256mb ATI radeon x300.

But as far as I've played, the game is good. Cars and tracks look great and the feel is quite good. I find the AI in PGR2 a bit erratic and not fun, GT3 is better, but this seems better still. I'm hoping Forza Motorsport and GT4 kick ass.

Okay major cockup by the designers on the handling of the Open Wheel cars for the us 1000 series. they are easier to drive fast around (example) road america with no wings... no apparent understeer if the front wing is gone for example, no massive oversteer if the rear wing is gone either.. just a slight change to a looser 'slidey' attitude which actually makes going fast easier. Obviously the model for damaged cars is pretty basic lol

sim snob is a silly term really. Sim Nerd fits better :p . I love real sims too when I have time to play them which is not often. my feelings towards GPL border on the unnatural. but theres room for fun games out there too, and by dismissing them you are missing out on a good time.

You have to go slowly to go fast in that event. It doesn't hurt to go inside the racing line in the slower turns, because it'll slow you down going into the corner and give you more traction coming out.

Hehe. I did give it a go. I rented it for a weekend and got a third of the way through the career mode. I just found it too easy. Every race was a start from the back of the grid and out-brake a million cars into each corner. Also I hated the snap oversteer that was totally canned. It didn't help that it has one of the worst versions of Bathurst I have ever seen. It was alright for a weekend but certainly not worth my time to buy. I understand about jump in and have fun kinds of racing games too though. I'm a big fan of the GT series and am really looking forward to Forza on xbox. But each to their own. I did find the "pro-simulation" mode warning in the game hilarious. :D

Theres a canned snap spin in gravel or sometimes on grass which is lame ass.. but the oversteer on track is pretty progressive and very linked to the throttle.. the cars can be drifted easily in many cases. Maybe too easily in some.

i have completed now - with the excetion of lake anton, i found it all a bit too easy, but i enjoyed it for what it was - an arcade racer.

Hope GT4 will be more about sims, than arcade

I bought it on the PC and play it with a MOMO racing wheel... good fun for a LAN but way too arcadey - give me F1C any day.

No graphics or game problems except the game overrides gamma changes every 20 seconds so can't play it on my 22" screen :(

Also it is just too easy to master. I played online for a while and after I learnt all the tracks I was ranked close to #1 in no time at all... stinks of console arcade-E-ness to me :smoking:

Indeed. I have the XBox version and I notice that the setup section doesn't even have rally tires - just the standard Soft-Hard options.

You can just choose to quit the championship - it saves your progress to date. You can even have another go at any races you've already completed in the championship.

In case anyone is interested... I've sussed the cause of the crashes... seemed to be conflicts with the sound card. So I turned the harware acceleration down to one notch above 'none' and it now works sweet as a nut!!

Any idea why my game has suddenly refused to instal properly, not recognising the key on the CD ?
Its just not having it even though the number is sat there in the box which happens automatically its saying invalid.

I just got the game yeasterday, used for $15USD, and I have to say Im really enjoying it! Like many of you however, the way the car's "float" around is a little weird though.

Anyways, I love the fact you get to compete in so many different classes, and there is a good amount of tracks as well!

Well worth the $15 I spent on it.

Have to say that this is a really fun game, a challenging game that has really good sim qualities while still making the game fun and not having to think terribly hard.

I enjoy all the different cars and driving on tracks that I have always heard of, Kyalami, Bathurst, Zandvoort, Vallelunga to name a few.

I have to say that the snap oversteer has served its purpose. This typically happens at a track like Donnington and you try and cut a chicane and pass 4 cars. Just when you think you have cut right through it, it snaps. It basically stops people from short cutting or cheating. I accept it although it is annoying at times.

The Ford GT looks awesome, when did they install the Ferrari-like V8 setup? Sure doesn't sound like one!

The Astons sound great as do most of the cars. What I really like about the game is the cockpit view, that really is a unique vantage point.

All in all, I was pleasantly surprised with this game. I didn't expect much but I remember playing TOCA years ago with all the BTCC cars so Codemasters knows who to make this type of game. Upon reading some reviews on this game, it is actually highly rated and praised overall. What is nice is the damage factor as it has the best, most punitive repercussions that I have ever seen.

Love this game and highly recommend it.

I bought this for the pc a few months back, played about 60% of it over two nights :o
I do enjoy the game, but the thing that annoys me, its called Toca race driver, now where is the BTCC, the series related to TOCA ?
Know its in the original, but then so where the V8's. I'd of just loved to have seen the btcc cars in the newer graphics engine. (and give evan muller a bloody nose ;) )

Looks like TOCA 3 is on the way. And, not 100% sure, but it may not be a european release.
Just had a mailing from Codies where they ask you to do a survey.
They had 3 different adverts, all show F1 cars.
Now, I believe Sony has a exclusive deal with the FOM for F1 games for PS2 in Europe.
This was showing as PS2, XBOX & PC. Maybe just no PSC version in Europe.

That was interesting, its defenetly a Williams F1 car on the image and as you point out, Formula One is listed as one of the categorys. But this my also just be a artist concept for the new game and not the actual game and in the game Formula One will be renamed and the cars will just look like F1 cars.

It was something from Codemasters. They are conducting some kind of survey on what ad to use.
All 3 have the same package art, but the main adverts are slightly different.

This looks like it's turning into a "Must have".
It's due out this fall/holiday. And yes, F1 is a definate.
Apparently if you work on the Open Wheel you work your way through F3, Formula Palmer and the ultimate goal is to become a driver for BMW Williams. I'm thinking that the rest of the gris may be something generic, but we'll see.

Here's some info I got from Codemasters:

If there’s one aspect of this job that’s never dull, it’s the forum. The announcement of a new game always generates a lot of discussion, a lot of questions and speculation, and usually a desperate scramble to answer those questions that are, at this early stage, answerable.

What I thought would be a good idea, for this newsletter, would be to go through the highlights of the ‘big questions’ thread on the forum and present them in the letter so that those readers who don’t read the forum, can get the latest information on the game and the direction we’re taking it.
So let’s get started, shall we?
Q: What real-world Championships are included in the game?
A: DTM (2005 season), V8 Supercars Championship series and HPDC Development series, British GT championship (both classes), Formula Palmer Audi. That’s not a complete list, and more will be announced soon.
Q: Will the total number of tracks increase in TRD 2006?
A: It increased to around 50 in TOCA Race Driver 2 and we have licensed more circuit variations giving 100 different variations for TRD 2006.
Q: What oval racing is in the game?
A: IndyCars, Stock Cars, Sprint Cars, Trucks and more.
Q: ToCA Race Driver 2 Online Play had some problems with people cheating - cutting corners, ramming and so on; has this been fixed?
A: All 100% sorted, more info to follow over coming months.
Q: When you boot a player, can they be banned from the session? At the moment, you boot someone and they can come straight back in...
A: Yes, we will be implementing banning permanently on all platforms.
Q: Will we have safety cars?
A: No, as this would mean losing one of the competition cars. We will have to wait for next generation consoles to do this.
Q: Will we be able to spectate on multiplayer races while we’re not on-track?
A: Yes, we have an on-line spectator mode so that people can see what is going on while they wait to join a race. We are also planning on having onboard cameras for our replay mode.
Q: So when’s the demo out?
A: Just before launch
Q: And the full game release date?
A: Currently slated as winter.
That’s just a taste of what we’ve been talking about on the forum and I’d recommend popping in and having a nose around. It’s really our main, well, forum, for communication between us the game makers, and you, the community.
That’s it for another month. If you want to chat, hopefully you now know the best place,

Well, TOCA 3 comes out next week.
Got mine pre-ordered, looks like it will be a lotta fun.

[I]you'll drive in British GTs (BGTC) and muscle cars, V8 supercars, DTM, monster trucks, Baja motocross, Formula Palmer Audi, historic grand prix, touring sports cars, Formula 3, BMW Williams F1 Team and many more. Each championship is complete with race rules including flags, warm-up laps, full car set up, and of course, the thrill of driving that particular car with all its eccentricities, challenges, and quirks.[I]

Any one else got this?
Got my copy this morning and did a couple of runs in the go karts.
So far this looks like fun, not a hard core sim, but if a few people get this we should start a live league.
