Hi Emery0323 and MCS - I seem to remember that Giunti had the "Roman" Eagle on his helmet but don't know about the Mayan style depiction. I always thought it was a smart pattern for 1970.

Yes I have seen that one before, quite why the visor has been chopped down I am not certain. I'd rather have the twin eye port one, but I may have to forget that!

My experience with running peaks on any helmet, is that the little gap between the top edge of the visor, and the peak creates a very annoying whistle at speed. I used to put draft excluder foam between the two, Mr Knepper appears to be sealing the gap another way!

Looking at a photo of Trevor Taylor from 1962, he had obviously stuck on a piece of tape over the helmet/peak gap BEFORE he spayed it yellow. In 1963 he had a white peak so maybe had changed to a type of helmet with a smaller gap....

These presumably had a significance or a personal meaning to them . Graham Hills represented London? Rowing Club. Piers Courage, Dickie Attwood and James Hunt all, i believe, had designs based on their public school colours. JYS of course had a tartan band (not sure what the significance of that particular tartan was though). Who else had a notable helmet design and what was its significance ?

Your wild guess would be right, the first time it appeared, Helen had glued a length of Royal Stewart tartan ribbon around Jackie's hitherto plain helmet. I imagine that in later years the tartan was painted on by a professional signwriter, it always looked very neatly done.

JYS did choose Royal Stewart & his Son Paul used Hunting Stewart on his helmets. On the creation of the Stewart F1 team, a new tartan used on the cars was created. It was called ??? Stewart, if anyone cares to guess!

Tony Lanfranchi and Mike Spence for me. No real idea why these designs were chosen by these drivers though. Just to stand out I imagine.

As for helmets, two of the very best motorcycle racer helmets have been Phil Read's (copied from Bill Lomas) and Mike Hailwood's (white with gold bands). I don't much care for modern day 'Pavement pizza' designs, as artistically applied as they are.

Yes, but having been a truly great driver thirty years earlier is a very different thing from running a team, that was one of the things that got peoples' backs up. On a personal level, I couldn't agree more, I met him several times when he was driving and at the peak of his fame, found him absolutely charming. As a twenty year old Jochen Rindt fan, I hadn't expected to be won over in the way I was, but I still cheered for Jochen.

There was a story that Lanfranchi just went along adding a dab of colour from every paintpot he found in each pit at one meeting, although that sounds as if it would be fatal for the helmet integrity.

Tom Pryce added vertical stripes to a peak (originally) so his father could pick him out of the otherwise anonymous FFord drivers.

Caution, beware!
Last summer I painted de Angelis helmet for Andreas Simon.
And then the helmet is on consignment at www.thememorabiliaexperience.c​om with signed.
Signed is absolutely false, because Angelis is already 27 years dead.
The helmet cost U$ 6000 there.
I have the saleswoman Monica Tranter warned that the signature is false.
She have then contacted the seller and would then adjust text.
Unfortunately, she did not.
Course, she will also catch a lot of money.
Too bad that people want to earn unfair way much money.

I don't recall Pironi's 86 Ligier test, but the helmet puzzles me.  I first thought it was a Nolan, but it might be the later GAP Strapless type, which I never saw as a competion version.

Interesting picture, never seen it before.

Seems to be the later GPA helmet. Same helmet worn by Pascal Fabre in 1987 and Rene Arnoux in 1988 but IIRC both had blue padding instead of white as seen in the picture above.

I think it is a development of the last generation of GPA. From what I recall something happened mid to late 80's & the factory & technology was sold to Bell who wanted a manufacturing facility in Europe.

I have a better version of this photo & if you look through the visor you can see the familiar oval logo

Was the helmet then branded as "Bell" rather than "GPA"???

I ask this because I have such a helmet in my collection with GPA branding.

 

I recall a Bell racing helmet looking a bit like the GPA but with chin strap. The only driver I recall wearing it was Bruno Giacomelli while racing Indy in mid 80´s

I've found an old car racing suppliers catalogue and the Bell is shown, described as a GT2 with Snell SA85 approval, available Spring 1988. It has a light blue grey interior just like the one in a GPA SJ. The shape looks similar enough to show some crossover.

If you recall in the mid 80's Arai GPN & Shoei RFG/Z were using plastic covers over the visor mechanism & IIRC this was thought the direction to go. It may have made GPA & Bell follow this path initially but subsequent Snell regulations called for recessed visor mountings. Arai & Shoei did this in 1988 by introducing the GP2 & GRV4. As Bell already had this system on their XFM1 series, it was re-homologated & the GT2 quietly disappeared.

The Giacomelli GT2 looks as it is the predecessor to the Bell AFX

Hmmmm, so what went on at Bell having GT2 (race version) ready in 1985 but not available for the public until 1988 when it was already obsolete regarding the Snell regulations.

I don´t think the GPA has something in common with the Bell GT2. The GPA race and street version seem to have the identical shell, except that the street version has a visor release button at the front of the chin bar. Don´t know how to open the race visor but it´s identical in size to street version. Race version has a narrow eyeport which is looking like additional padding.

Bell GT2 street version has a very large eyeport with a much larger visor than the race version and the shell is looking different (at least to me) while the small eyeport of the race version requires a different visor.
